Luke Ryan with 37 of the most ineffective disposals chipping around in front of our goal. Lol you know it’s a *in s**t day when that happens.
Ross and Robert Harvey would have been cracking the champagne in the coaches box at that stat.
They flashed up a graphic that had pretty much our entire backline as our top 6 highest possession getters late in the fourth. Absolute stinker from the mids.

Really good reminder not to read into pre-season games.

Going in I think we were all a bit excited that the new look forward line could work. But, let's be honest, it failed so spectacularly you simply have to chalk it up to a good experiment and move on. (Maybe only refer to it in hush tones 10 years from now)

We won the inside 50s 52 - 65, and managed to kick just 7 goals.

Here's the howler though; Our %In50 per goal was 10%. The worst in the AFL.

So. as an example, in order for us to kick 100 points, we need to create 160+ inside 50s per game!

That's just not feasible or realistic. But, it is valuable feedback the club can use going forward.

I agree with Joao
The gameplan is seriously flawed. Chipping around slowly is several years out of date. I actually think we have the personnel to play more aggressively. It’s not impossible. Players like Clark, Frederick, Switta, Walker, Chapman and Cox would slot seamlessly into collingwoods team.
But will the coaching panel make those adjustments?

Premiership defence, serviceable midfield, bottom 4 forward line.
Premiership defence, adequate to v.good midfield, ordinary - decent forward line, terrible defensive and very clearly outdated gamplan.

I mean, did JL not watch any of the Geelong coverage since mid 2022 where it was very obvious they changed the gameplan that hadn't worked for 10 years and then immediately won a flag? Or did he watch it and think, "Nah, I know better"?

Totally out coached. Backline near on faultless so time to put some effort into the mids and forwards. Have never seen such a disappointing result from our marking forwards in Tabs, Treacy, Fyfe and Jackson. Only Darcy looked like taking a mark forward. Mids very uncompetitive and poor ruck work from Darcy who clearly had an advantage. All this can be fixed fairly quickly but you really worry about our pathetic entries in the forward line. Clarkson is going to love reviewing our game!
Nah not faultless. Good defensively but some disposals were terrible. Cox was good and took good marks then proceeded to do dodgy kicks. Bar the handball in the last quarter, wilsons overall disposal was good and he did create run off the backline

Found it odd that the whole preseason we didn't see Jackson at a centre bounce as a mid, he goes into 1 centre square bounce today, wins a free kick and we never see it again. Just weird, not that I necessarily think he can but U don't try so ething in preseason, try it once in rd1, it works the one time U try it so you never do it again in a game you need a loft in.

at least we wont be April Premiers lol I've never liked JLo, but have had to accept he is our coach - I'm not giving up on him (or Freo) in round 1. That's normally the behaviour of 'the guys down the road',

Loss to the same St Kilda tripe last season. Then it reset the team and got on a roll.

JL will just drop forwards and hope the smalls do it.

The players are competent, the gameplan was horrific.
Agreed!!! the negativity makes it difficult to be a Freo supporter sometimes. We were never going to have a zero loss season. This entire round had some interesting results.

The key difference for me was that Henry was one of our few mids out there looking to take the game on and keep the ball moving, as opposed to Hughes sideways kicking and general timidity.

It's the same thing with Walkers occasional HTBs - at least he's trying to get us going, as opposed to sitting there like a stunned mullet looking for the perfect spot kick.
Nah not if its a costly turnover in the dangerous part if the ground. That can change the whole momentum of the game

Midfield absolutely sucked. JOM isn’t anything special. Fyfe has to play more midfield at times and wouldn’t be against dropping JOM to bring Sturt in. That way it’s more balanced and Fyfe can swing forward.

Not panic stations yet but it will be ij Jlo does not make significant changes.

As I am fond of saying you need to get your top talent on the park. To have Amiss, Johnson and Erasmus in the magoos while Banfield, Hughes and Treacy play is nuts. Sure the latter are good role players but they are not top shelf quality.

Amiss is a natural forward who reads the play well. Treacy is not. The difference in forward craft is stark. Fyfe should not be pigeon holed into a permanent full forward. He is a third tall who can be given a run on the ball on occassion.

It would be nice if the local media focused on the gamestyle instead of some cliched commentary about personnel. Maybe ask those kind of questions to Jlo at the next presser.
But that isn’t going to happen sadly.
I’m still on way home from the game so haven’t heard Jlo press conference yet.
Assuming he will just refer to “the contest” about 20 times then say nothing else of note.

Well done by Ross and The Saints.

For us.. what an awful and boring way to lose a game of football. We got 3 goals from free kicks.

Chip, pass, chip, pass against a team hard flooding the backline. We played right into the hands of RtB.

JLo needed to change things up and he didn't.

We were so boring and bland.

Yep.

We do have some good users. And we have some fast players.

Just wonder about the midfield though. Collectively are they fast and good users? Average maybe.
