Round 1 team

By all means go into melt mode, but if anyone thinks the future is being built around D Pearce and Sutcliffe, then they haven't been paying attention.

Personally I think it is silly to want as many debuts as possible for round 1. First year players rarely play many games during the year

This simply isn't true.

2016 draft and games played in 2017

Andrew McGrath: 21 games
Tim Taranto: 14
Hugh McLuggage: 18
Ben Ainsworth: 13
Will Setterfield: 2
Sam Petrovski-Seton: 20
Jack Scrimshaw: 4
Griffin Logue: 13
Will Brodie: 3
Jack Bowes: 11

So 7 of last year's top 10 played 11 or more games. 3 of them played 18 or more games. Many of them in sides that played finals, let alone for sides that were on the record as being "rebuilding".

Playing DP?

I can't think of any recruit in Lyon's time more likely to debut Rnd 1 than Slayer or whatever we've dubbed him.
Lyon, some posters and a few of the players have commented on how physically advanced, focused and savvy this bunch of draftees are and how they've really responded to the professional AFL environment.
Banfield looks likely as well, but the priority is their long term development and the context it all occurs in.
“Critical” development of youth on track.
Round 1 is neither here nor there unless they figure it fits long term development.
Based on all the info the selection committee has forwarded me I think it fits.

Ross Lyon came out and said integrity of selection was important and that players that had done full pre-seasons and performed well would have the edge over those that hadn't.

This bit concerns me somewhat. I think all first years have a restricted preseason. In that case Banfield and Brayshaw could miss out.

Confirmed. Banfield and Brayshaw will debut this weekend.

Sauce FFC video.
So is that just for AFL debutants? Matera just gonna be given his number on the day. Can't see him being left out.. but good on Brayshaw, was against the pick at the time. But ripper attitude, work rate and is slotting in straight away.
Banfield has come from left field to get into the team. Excellent too.

Can't wait, round 1 cannot come soon enough.

It seemed as though Fyfey was picking up another Guernsey at the end of the Video that I linked, possibly Matera and wilsons? just no video for it I suppose

Good signs that Ross is playing Banfield.
Validates all the selection talk of ‘play your way in’ etc.
the guy won a wafl F&B then backs it up with consistent JLT form in a wasteland of a spot at defensive HF.
I’d be livid if he wasn’t picked

Is it silly for me to think Nyhuis should take spurr’s place for round 1?
We may be lacking an intercept marker however, a pure shutdown defender in the same style as Nick Smith for Sydney would be a good option vs Port.
His shutdown work on the WAFL’s best small forwards could make him a prime candidate for a wingard/Motlop match up.
Positives pace, strength, good D
Negatives: lacking confidence, not as good intercepting

With Spurr out, I would definitely expect Blakely to play spare in defence as the interceptor. MJ in this pos is questionable as I don’t think he covers the ground as well as he used to.

I imagine we are now looking at this for round 1. Anything outside of this would surprise me, other than B Hill potentially playing.

Ryan Hamling Johnson
Blakely A. Pearce Wilson
Langdon Brayshaw Tucker
Walters Mundy Matera
Ballantyne Taberner McCarthy
Sandilands Neale Fyfe
D. Pearce Sutcliffe Kersten Banfield
Emg: Darcy Grey Sheridan Cox

Obligatory not sure who I have missed

FB - Ryan Hamling Johnson
HB - Blakely A.Pearce Wilson (Backline really picks itself if we're not worried about replacing Spurr)
C - B.Hill* Neale Langdon
HF - Walters Kersten Matera
FF - McCarthy Tabs Banfield
FOL - Sandi Fyfe Mundy

INT - Ballas, Brayshaw, Tucker, D.Pearce**

* If B.Hill misses it's really anybody's guess who gets a game. Would love to see North/Cerra picked, but expect Sutcliffe/Sheridan.
** Much talk saying he shouldn't be in the squad this week, but I can't really name a better option from the JLT. I don't really agree with talk that if he plays Langdon/Tucker dont. However, if they choose to replace Spurr with a more 'lockdown' defender, I'd hope Pearce is the man that goes to allow for this, and hence, would only play if B.hill misses.

I think this lineup looks pretty likely based on JLT and the way the club seems to be thinking at the moment

On last weeks Peel form Hughes is rustier than a shitehouse door and Sheridan was very average. Neither would be in the mix you would think.Cerra and Crowden are coming of a restricted pre so all this talk about not playing the kids is bollocks. They aren't ready fitness wise yet. North will have to wait for a spot to open up , a lot of established mids up and about. If Blakely doesn't replace Spurr if a replacement was to come out of the Peel boys Nyhuis and Duman would be around the mark.
