Richmonds small forwards killed us, we were too tall down back. Buckley seems to be the next in line for a small defender role.
Honest question - does he *seem* to be the next in line or are we just assuming that to be the case? As much as it pains me to say it, I don't see how he adds anything to the team that we can't get elsewhere. Also, we weren't really killed by Richmond's small forwards - their midfield just totally dominated ours for large parts of the game. Our backline was often overrun and exposed because of that - one more small back pocket wouldn't have changed much unfortunately.

I think an extra small defender would've helped with balance, rebound and saved the midfielders legs. It would've made a difference but only to reduce the margin. On which small, I think Buckley just seems to be the next in line. I would prefer a Williamson, or someone else.

Couldn't watch the game because of work but I did view parts of it.

I'm generally happy, so long as the younger players are being fielded in a protected environment and excelling, I'm not concerned.

By protected environment I mean an environment where they're not physically and mentally dominated by the opposition, leading to the crushing of their souls and stunted development.

I caught Bolton on 7 news a little while ago and he seemed aware of the need to strike that delicate balance between blooding youngsters and not overburdening and exposing them at the same time.

A few times I noticed Cripps had the ball and was slow to handpass it off - either trying to get around one too many players, or wasn't able to see anyone to pass it off to?

If we snagged Hopper, which I've stated I'm dead keen on, then I'd go for Fyfe in FA.

With that top 3 pick used on best mid, your list of players and hopefully one or both of Fisher & Polson coming on, that's a midfield that could win something within the 6 years Fyfe would be contracted for.

If a certain someone wants home again, get another first rounder & snag best mid available again with that.

Murph is the only one that wouldn't be there for No.17. 33 in 2021 though, could do a Crawford, you never know....

Agree with this, mentioned it before.

For me, long shot of happening but is possible we could get something like Fyfe, Hopper and our first draft pick to add to the midfield next year...that would completely transform our midfield from crap to right up there amongst the best. In one off season lol.

Fyfe, Cripps, Murphy, Gibbs, Hopper, sps, first round draft pick.

Imagine that for a moment.
Would actually be one of the best midfields in the competition imo and not impossible to happen.

Add that to the continual growth of our defence and forward line, and top 8 is possible next year and challenging top 4 probably in 2020...well within Murphy, Gibbs and Fyfes careers.

No. No. No. Dylan Thomas would never get a game for Carlton. Great poet and playwright. Liked the booze too much. Perhaps would have got a game in the 70s.;)

10 is not half of 22. Games total 170.
Geez sorry I didn't have a calculator on me... five elevenths of the side played 170 games total if you didn't get the picture of what I was saying the first time

I'm about 1 year behind you. Push for the 8 in 2019, make finals 2020, top 4 in 2021. Prefer your scenario though.

Best bit, it doesn't affect the long term strategy, as Fyfe wouldn't cost anything in draft picks like Juddy did and Hopper is currently 20, perfect age.

Having such a young and talented backline already sorted is such a bonus. Next few drafts can be mids & a young ruckman. Our forward line just needs patience and a possible FA acquisition down the track.

*sorry, Aph. List management & all. Just came up here so went with it.

Totally agree in theory but what if we get pick 1 and Jarrod Brander absolutely kills it? ;)

I've just posed this scenario in the List Management thread ;)

Yep, I don't know much about him either but simply asking the rhetorical question as to what we do if the clear standout isn't a midfielder.
Gee I dunno, tough one. Is Ben Silvagni eligible for the nationals this year?

If so and he shows a bit, maybe we wait for him the next season? If not, I'm back to being unsure. I do like picking the best players available.

There'd have to be a rather big gap between the forward and the mid for me.

*cracks knuckles*

He was an emergency, and he played as a 4th or 5th defender. Let him go back to the VFL and dictate more in a couple of games while we figure out a better way to structure (eg. move on from Rowe, settle our defensive shape and midfield pressure).

It does zero for his confidence to be dropped on guys like Rioli and get towelled for change of direction at ground level despite his athletic prowess. Reminds me of Waite in his second year, except we never asked him to do that.

How about we leave Macreadie in and drop White instead?
Life is easier when you keep it simple. :)

Disagree with you both here. I don't think anyone is saying he's a write-off, but we need to find the right balance and structure as well.

At this point in time, picking three of Rowe, Marchbank, Plowman and Macreadie to play down back in the seniors, Macreadie is last in line. He'll get opportunities, but we don't need to shoehorn him into the backline if it means we get cut up by small forwards.

Drop White, keep Macreadie, bring in a running player, eg Buckley, Sheehan, Polson, Williamson.
A rebuild is a rebuild and for the first time ever, we have embraced it from round 1.
