It will crazy to play a match unfit player in McDonald on Greene especially after having players miss out who have performed well in the inter club and match sim games.
But I expect because his captain he will play shouldn’t play but will and if things go pear shape someone will be made the scapegoat.
This club needs to start thinking for the NOW reward players that perform as we have new assistant coaches a new crop of young players that we are starting to mould as a team on and off the field and I don’t and I expect a lot of supporters of this club feel the same don’t want it destroyed by playing players because of a family name that has been at the club since the dinosaurs.
My opinion only McDonald is done and won’t just to our new style of play need to continue to play Goater Bergmann Fisher Sheezel Mckercher Archer in the back half then Stephens and Scott Lazzaro Phillips Wardlaw Simpkin LDU around the mid field area .
So I can’t see where here plays.
I totally agree.

During his commentary on Kayo he talked about the timing of his injury and it not impacting his fitness because he had already done the fitness blocks and the he could have played. No doubt will next time.

People on here have been forecasting his demise every year. Time will tell but I don’t see him being rushed out the door but his role will evolve for sure

The demise has happened across the last 3 years in my opinion. Be great if he bounces back, but if not, happy to give others a go. We now have a solid 4-5 small-medium defenders.Goater the like for like replacement I think but he is a better defender, and still learning his craft.

Even if we were a top team this is a tough assignment first up. Interstate game against a top 6 team who have already blown the cobb webs out the week before. Who does this fixture anyway?

Assuming the following:
  • No new injuries between now and round 1
  • Corr, Tucker and Scott come up in time.

FB - J Goater, A Corr, C McKercher
CHB - Z Fisher, K Dawson, H Sheezal
C - D Tucker, LDU, D Stephens
CHF - C Lazzaro, CCJ, J Simpkin
FF - J Stephenson, N Larkey, P Curtis
Ruck - T Xerri, T Powell, G Wardlaw
Bench - C Zurhaar (Fwd), W Phillips (Mid), B Scott (Wing/back), M Bergman (Wing/Back)

It's an attacking line up with Goater playing the 3rd tall hybrid role which gives us a an extremely mobile and attacking back half of the field. If Corr doesn't come up i'd be happy to play Pink.

Next in line
Backs - T Pink, L McDonald,
Mids/Wings - L Shiels
Fwds - C Harvey, B Drury, Z Dursma

McDonald will play. Maybe even on the bench, but he'll play. On Greene, as well. He's played on him before and done it well, from memory.

B: McDonald K.Dawson Goater
HB: Sheezel Comben Fisher
C: Stephens LDU Scott
HF: Simpkin Zurhaar Powell
F: Curtis Larkey Stevenson
R: Xerri Wardlaw Lazarro
IC: Corr Phillips McKercher Harvey Sub: Shiels
Who is pinch hitting ruck?

CCJ will play

Jy "only" had 14 touches, but 1 bad kick aside, I thought it was the most "useful" he's looked in a long time in that high half forward role.

He put on pressure, he pushed up as a plus 1. Was strong overhead when required and chopped out the CBA's when there was a gap in players getting gassed.

If he becomes our version of Schultz or Dylan Moore, that would be a huge win in a new role.

It’s going to be one of the most selfless and important roles in the side.

Him pushing up and allowing LDU and George to go about their business at stoppages is going to be vital.

Alex Neal Bullen has played this role at the Dees a lot which has allowed Petracca and Oliver to dominate games.

Lmac will play if fit, sadly. Wednesday showed that we don't need him down there, he wasn't missed.

When you look at the amount of Sunday and 1pm games we have, it's pretty obvious who does the fixture. :)

If fit, both Comben and McDonald will play...

Who do you drop? Dawson, Corr or Goater?
Thats not for me to think about but someone will have to make way...however if l had to choose then l would remove Bergman , bench Goater and put in Comben...Not sure who will make way for McDonald but might end up being Phillips which is unfortunate because he wi playing well. Begamn or Phillips could then be the 5th bench player (sub). The thing that is confusing is there is no mention as to why Comben didnt play against the Pies. if he doesn't play against the saints then l would be starting to worry about whats going on with him...

Comben had soreness from the intra so played it safe

He’ll play v saints
If it's taken him this long to get back from a hammy I reckon it's a bad sign. I wouldn't expect him to be playing round 1
Lmac was saying he would have played v pies but they decided to instead give 1 more big training block week and to play vs saints instead

I think he is good to go from an injury perspective similar to corr

Not sure i agree that Comben is a straight up lock considering a limited pre-season and some general soreness.

Anyways, its all speculation and it's just great to finally having some genuine competition for spots.

If Scott is fit he’s in the starting 18 over Tucker. Also I think Shiels has a spot in that side given how young they are and the lack of experience.

Zurhaar is not starting on the bench in favour of Lazarro.

I don’t think CCJ is a lock either. Yes he’s big , but I haven’t seen anything to tell me that he is even a competent, let alone second ruckman.

Also think we need to consider Pink, even if it’s as insurance in the bench.

It’s pretty close, but if I was making some tweaks it might look like the below.

FB - J Goater/ A Corr, T Pink, C McKercher
CHB - Z Fisher, K Dawson, H Sheezal
C - B Scott, LDU, D Stephens
CHF - C Zurhaar, Greenwood, J Simpkin
FF - J Stephenson, N Larkey, P Curtis
Ruck - T Xerri, T Powell, G Wardlaw
Bench - JGoater/ A Corr, C Lazarro, L Shiels. The last bench spot could be any number of players Harvey, Tucker, Dursma, CCJ, McDonald or Comben.

The practice match against St Kilda will tell us a lot about where they are leaning, as you would think it would be close to a dress rehearsal.

Greenwood is the risky move, but given CCJ’s output I’m inclined to roll the dice and see how the mid sized second ruck works? Greenwood is actually a better ruckman the CCJ and gives that extra ground level player up forward too.

It’s a really tough game first up, they have stars and really good players on every line.

I'd rate GWS away as one of our hardest games of the year. If they had proven themselves to have a proper home advantage, then it'd be the toughest game on the schedule without doubt.

Our opening five weeks are pretty brutal. Carlton at Marvel, Geelong at GMHBA, and Brisbane in Adelaide are other tough matches we face early that could punish our inexperienced lineup of key defenders.

The week two game against Fremantle could be pivotal in avoiding a potential 0-5 start.
