One of the good things to come out of tonight is that Ah Chee could become a serious weapon down forward and the opposition won't be on to him for a while.

We have plenty of defenders . And it frees up more M/F time for Charlie ( who btw was cooked by half time tonight ) and McCarthy.

Unsurprisingly Witherden and Answerth didn't look near as good against this opposition but they tried hard and offer decent depth.

What many people were calling for was these young players to be blooded against garbage teams like Adelaide, so that they wouldn't be playing their first game against the defending premiers who are in form.
Our hands were tied and it’s unfortunate. But the cumbersome forward is on its way out of the game. It’s a quick, dynamic and athletic forwards game now. Unfortunately that’s something that’s rarely developed.

All this talk of which players are better is irrelevant. The only players we need are ones who can score goals and not behinds
The thing that worries me a little is that we're getting a bit used to missing gettable opportunities.

Good players nail fairly easy shots most times . You're not a really good player if you don't do that.

Let me leave for tonight with one big positive I noticed - effort on 3rd quarter was fantastic.

If only we had landed 3 or 4 goals at the beginning of that third quarter, we would've been right back in it.

Glad I had work tonight, first game I've missed all season.

Not really surprised considering the shorter break but no real excuse. Will just hope that we bounce back against the Dogs, bloody annoying that it's another 4 day break though.

Strangely enough I don't mind losing now, if we are ever to beat them, I hope it's an important final.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing, but for some reason it does annoy me that our 'captain' always wants to play the class clown.

Just captain the bloody club and learn to kick captain's goals.
I think his class clown attitude has been great for intergrating the young players in and building comradery within the group.

He has set great examples in regards to his pressure and intensity at the contest for many years, I think he is a great lead by example player in that regard.

We did lose badly tonight but the last two years have seen brilliant growth under his captaincy and any calls that he is a dud captain is knee jerk and completely disregarding of the bigger picture. But to be fair there has been a lot of outlandish, negative stuff posted on here after what is just one loss against a very good side and under difficult circumstances.

Our goal efficiency per inside 50’s ended up being 10%. Yes we had a shorter break and I expected a loss but to have the 2nd and 3rd quarters result in 1 goal 12 behinds is pathetic for a team that knows how to apply pressure and has players that have at least 50% accuracy.

Zorko was really off tonight, a number of inside 50’s were below his standard. He turned the ball over taking risky options that just weren’t there. Sadly I don’t think Skinner or Ballenden offer us enough up forward. Skinner isn’t agile, can only run in straight lines.

Mcluggage, Berry and Robbo all had very little impact on the game, too many missed tackles in the centre square. Lyons and Neale did well.

Inability to create score board pressure from our domination of inside 50’s for the year will see us embarrassed by the better teams. We deserve to finish in the top 8 but I’d have us the 5th or 6th best team at this stage.

This. Should have rested half the team tonight, we were never winning given the circumstances. I'm a huge optimist but this was a schedule loss weeks ago.
I don't get this attitude. It mainly comes from trolls from other teams. The idea that we aren't even close to beating Richmond. I understand what you're saying re resting players, but if we actually kick straight (as hard as that seems) we are right there with them if not exceeding them comfortably

They generally rest players against garbage teams, not against other championship contenders.
When the fixture is known ahead of time it's easier to schedule that. Due to the fixture being written dynamically it's harder to manage than it otherwise would be.

no idea why the Zorko stuff is around.. He playing with a bad foot. Does some stupid things now and then although tries week in and week out.

problem is goal scoring and how we move into our 50 to do it
we bomb in bring the ball to ground and hope our smalls work miracles. Weeks Charlie on song we win.. Weeks he goes quiet we do not.
Getting almost as simple as that :( Berrry and Linc stepped up a few games.
Although our game plan is for a small to goal not a tall.

Against top teams their interceptors pick off the ball too much.
Even though I hoped Skinner and Ballenden would step up, their young and last year where not setting the NEAFL on fire when I watched.
Although each week people called for McStay's head. Like Rayner I worked out he is a team player. A cog.
I more worried where Hipwood is heading. not sure what is up he just does not seem to be running well.

The three young talls against the Tigers was always a bridge too far.

Their two big key forwards kicked 7 between them and dominated the game. We don't have anyone like Lynch. McStay tries. Hipwood falls over all the time. Skinner and Balladen might be good players in a year or two.

It means we dominate play, looking like a swarm of angry ants, but the good teams, with key forwards, can run us over. Against Geelong their key forwards beat our blokes pointless, without kicking as many goals. Unfortunately I think we will make the finals and fall over again but remember how crap we were a few years ago.

This team is a work in progress. I'm not sure Brown is the answer but he's better than our current crop.

I thought we should have “managed” Zorko and Robinson - both looked way off the pace.

While Payne, Ballenden and Skinner showed they are not yet up to the level required, they can be excused for inexperience. Hipwood was the most frustrating to me. He needs to create more contents and stop going to ground. Goes down easier than an autumn leave.

4 day break - are a huge difference.

Umps clearly got the memo that we got the rub of the green last round, and not to do that again. Horrible game for them, and then they gave junk timers to us to make it look fair.

Surprised by the love for Ah Chee. He was running well and getting around. Positioning was great. Then he got the ball. Made the wrong decision or had poor execution every bloody time. Was just about yelling at the TV every time he got the ball.

4 goals 17. Need to say that again. Ridiculous.

I get your point but we kicked poorly and made some poor decisions because we were tired imo.

It was just so obvious.

Came out firing ,used our bullets, ran out of gas but kept persisting all night but not with enough juice in the tank to be more precise nor the enegy to finish off under pressure. And killed on the overlap without the legs to man up.

I think it's that simple . We need to clean up our finishing ,our structure was no good tonight , but I really don't think we had much hope against a team who planned well for where we were at ,absorbed it , and outsmarted us.

Is Eagles fit? Much better option as second ruck, half back, resting tall forward than the three young talls. Hate to say it, bit I dont think Skinner is AFL standard, rough skills, hard hands, no class (love to be proved wrong). Ballenden has a chance as a good mover and ball user. Needs to be stronger in the air. Payne, jury out. Very green but athletic. Cant play all three. Harris needs to play in a zone off role where he can play to his strengths. You lose twice by playing him man on man on a deep power forward like Lynch or Hawkins... No surprise that our two worst performances were when we didnt have Harris controlling the air from CHB because he was jostling (and losing) in the goal square.
There is a guy running around for Norf, I think his name is Walker, would be handy at both ends right now.

1st was even.. they played better in the 2nd we played better for 7 points in the third.. They played better in the last.
I know the scoring was crap.
If we kicked better.. I think they had enough gears to go up when needed.
I felt it was a 4-5 goal loss.

What we do badly is when we have the flow we do not score.
did the same against the cats
Tigers finals last year
GWS as well
We struggle big games

I’m actually happy for them and their % of putrid supporters to think they have a 40 point wood on us.
They are better than us, but not by that much. Learn from this.

Sorry to intrude, I agree, we're not much better but we may have a mental edge. In terms of talent I reckon we're pretty much on par, Brisbane with slightly more upside. Brisbane will beat us once players like mccluggage, Rayner and Berry get to the 75 to 100 game mark. Rayner is a gun already and will be an absolute beast once he averages 20 plus.

I don't think we're that far off of them and I still think some aspects of tonight were very positive. I hate to make excuses but historically when looking at examples across all team sports when there is a big disparity in the time both teams have to prepare it does place the team on a shorter break at a disadvantage. It's not an idea that we can't beat Richmond it's looking at the bigger picture, keeping players injury free and making sure we're in a position to win as many games during this block as possible. The idea of load management is only met with outrage because it's unfamilar in an AFL setting, but everything about this season is unfamiliar. To say it sets a bad example to the playing group disregards the fact that it happens everywhere around the world and has no such affect.

Once again, we shot ourselves in the foot against Richmond with our appalling kicking for goal.

Our combined totals from the qualifying final and this game is a staggering 12 goals 34 behinds.

Theirs in those same two games is 30 goals 14

So with a net of 2 more scoring shots we have lost by a combined total of 89 points.

It won't matter what personal we bring in , what structures we play or how we rejig our forward line, we are never going to get near them until we can get something like a 50/50 slit of goals and behinds.

The frustrating thing is that we generally mix it with them in the other facets of the game and often having entire quarters where dominate them. Like the third quarter tonight. We kicked 7 behinds and of course bloody Reiwoldt eventually kick a goal at the other end from an acute angle.

The other incredibly frustrating aspect of the game was the number of times our guys slipped over at crucial times .

Not to mention the usual flukey bounces that seem to plague us when we play Richmond.

All in all another depressing loss to the yellow and blacks
