Not likely to change the outcome obviously but really annoying that the Hawks played in Melbourne yesterday and we play interstate this afternoon.

All their AFL emergencies are playing and playing well and ours arent

The fixturing of AFL and VFL leaves a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately my dream of T1000 Adam Saad is going to remain just that.

El Hawli can play but his speed is nothing special.

How is shiel going?
Has played okay but it has been a mixed bag. It has been hard for him when he breaks from clearance but ends up with no options as the VFL guys have stopped and are ball watching. If he had a Parish or Merrett to give off to you would say he has gone well.
There has been times where he has looked resigned to the fate of the game but he has not been selfish and has given off to the young blokes even though they have stuffed up a lot.
A bit of a mixed game. Some good stuff and a bit of going through the motions.

So pretty average stuff today. They where too good. Too quick and simply out played us. We could not get the basics right.

Shiel - played okay but he was hamstrung a bit by not having a supporting cast . I suspect his clearance numbers would have been 10 plus if he actually had options to give it to but too often there where none and he had to wear a tackle . His game was made up of some strong efforts and some other times where he was just going with the flow as the game was shot and there was not a lot he could do. Worked hard defensively in the first half but it was a bit patchy after half time. He could have gone into total selfish mode but he still used the young blokes when he could and he kept up the talk with them. It just looks like sometimes when things are not working he seems to be a boke who knows his fate.

Weideman . Strong start down back with 6 or so intercept marks in the first half. Moved forward after half time but we all know what he is like as a forward.

Setterfield. Bit rusty early but he never gave in. Was the best for mine. Good numbers and strong game although there where a few scrappy kicks and he also suffered a bit from winning the footy in close but having limited options to give it to. He looks ready if they need him.

Hayes . Did not dominate as such but defensively he was fine and still found the footy. Did not do a lot wrong.

Reid. Good early. Injured again.

Lual . Bit quiet early and had his hands full with some of the quick Hawk small forwards but did an okay job and was better after half time.

Davey . Do not know where this bloke is at. He was horrible. Did not work hard enough either way. Simply ran past blokes rather than trying to tackle several times. Did not even work hard into space a number of times when he could have offered a leading option. His sheepdog tricks may have worked in school footy but they do not often work at the next level up. He needs to roll up the sleeves and start getting dirty.

Visentini . Battled hard in the ruck but was beaten on the day. Not far behind in hit out numbers but had issues with the around the ground efforts of his opponent. Good to see him get a full game in the ruck. Not a lot of physical presence in his game yet as you would expect. Work in progress.

Wanganeen . Pretty average first half. Played a bit better after half time. Just has to find a way to get himself into the game. Did some good stuff after half time but just goes missing for too long. Injuries have killed any momentum he has ever built up. Today I was wondering why at 10 goals down we did not maybe send him to half back and have a look.

El-Hawli - tough assignment first up in a new side that was getting smashed off the park but he kept at it . Started on the wing and struggled to get into the game but once he was down back he was solid and backed himself to take the game on .Made a couple of errors including one poor handball that cost a goal but in general I thought he did okay. As mentioned he is not Adam Saad speed but he has enough toe to get himself out of trouble and break the lines. Skills looked okay. Can mark and defended okay under some decent pressure. Liked that he was vocal and looking to be in the game and even getting around our young VFL blokes. Good enough start on a tough day.

Have to say our experienced VFL blokes did not give us a lot. O'Neill as captain does not play a lot of inspiring footy to my eye. Hately was pretty poor today. His ball handling was below average and he stuffed up several chances . Peris does not do enough for a player of his experience.
The rest of the VFL squad are just too young or have not played enough games at the level. I had a feeling this would happen today. 15 or so players with 15 VFL games or less and no real forward line. I have no idea what sort of list management they thought they where doing but you just have to have 3 or 4 good reliable VFL guys who play a hard brand of footy and can lead the way. We have not consistently had that . The young blokes have a crack but they are just making their way and who knows if they will be AFL level.

Maybe he's been sick?
Not yet match fit since coming back from injury?
...or is it a recurring theme?
I do not know but we had VFL players who have played limited footy having more of a crack. I could understand if he had early effort and then faded.

Did we stuff his progression by making sit out an entire season when he could’ve played for a big chunk of it?

Any other thoughts on Wangers, mate? I didn’t see a second of the game but was half following on the app. Stats really picked up second half, were they just nothing stats or did he look okay?

He was better after half time but it was just an okay game. Now he has had a run of games he should be doing a bit more.

I could not say on that other than I did hear his effort towards the training we wanted him to do last year was not always ticking the boxes so he did not play. The biggest problem now is lack of effort for large parts of the game.

Wasn't just a heavy defeat but there were very few signs of life so I have not been able to summon the motivation to do any form of review. I might add things to player threads throughout the week.

The one thing I want to say is that I thought the game was part of a positive general trend for Tex. He was as involved in a game as he has been, certainly this season. He set up scores yesterday. He shanked one shot on goal and slightly missed a few high degree of difficulty assists that he is capable of.

I wouldn't give him more than a 5-5.5/10 for his game so do not interpret this as me thinking he had a great game. But if he executes I think he's got claim to a very solid attacking game, 6-6.5/10.

I wasn't able to follow the second half that closely so I couldn't track his movement, positioning, etc.

He's one of the few guys who is a numbers man in the sense that if he gets the ball 15 to 20 times his impact will be significant. Hopefully he can put a consistent run of games together now.

What's your take on El Hawli?

What's your take on El Hawli?

It was a tough one to read.

He played wing and half back but he was rarely in space primarily due to the complete collapse of the structure between the arcs. Box Hill had the ball something like 100 more times and it wasn't because they were chipping it around half back.

I wonder whether he played inside at stages because he seemed to me to be following the ball around quite a bit. That also happens when the structure falls apart because it's the only way you can get the ball.

Yesterday he was a solid player capable of slogging it out in the trenches but there was no real sign of why he was recruited. He had the opportunity to turn on the afterburners a few times but his pace was only above average - nothing special. I haven't followed his story at all so I am not sure what he is supposed to be.
