Out : J Madgen, C Brown, T Brown, Begg, Macrae
In : Roughead, Elliott, Ginnivan, Cox, Pendlebury

I'd persist with McCreery for one more for the sake of our structure.
Elliott and Ginnivan gives us more scoring power along with Cameron playing more time forward.
McCreery adds balance and will create more opportunities which others can score from.
Plus, Freo are quick on their big deck :)

Begg will get eaten alive by Darcy and Lobb - best thing to do for his development is to play Cox this week.

I’m convinced we’ve been flat due to the flu going through the club and three 6 day breaks in a row. Think we’ll bounce back hard this week
And he will eaten alive by them and similar ruckmen be if he plays 300 games. No amount of experience will make a good ruckman out of the boy. He's too small.

Experience and getting games into young players is generally believed to improve them.
It improves them if they're good enough to contribute in the seniors.

When they're not ready, my view is if they're the really competitive type who you know will just get up and keep going no matter how many times they get knocked down - ala Bruzzy, it will be good for them whether they are good enough for seniors or not. But most people stop getting up when they get knocked down over and over again.

The problem I see with late 2023 is we will also be without pendles, Howe, sidey, roughy, Elliot and checkers on the out, and crisp and adams will be 30ish. Who replaces all that? We are in deep poop as a list. Far to many of our best are nearing the end. We need two rebuilds.
Simply the problem is that we have either the 2nd or 3rd worst list in the AFL after North Melbourne & possibly West Coast. I can see a very hard 4 to 5 years of pain coming our way. Goodnight & good luck!

I suspect they'll want more than 1 good game from murphy before promoting him. Like they have done with those that have been promoted.
Especially coming off an injury

I’d have agreed with you but Madge’s injury somewhat changes that. If Roughy isn’t available, it then becomes a choice between Ruscoe and Murphy. A little more left field would be McMahon perhaps.

The cupboard is bare and Ruscoe hasn’t been great. Circumstances can change selection criteria.
Cupboard is bloody bare if Murphy returning from a long injury only needs one good game in a flogging to get a recall.

Him coming good would be a really unexpected bonus.

Things are never as bad or as good as they appear to be. Often a couple of astute draft picks and a good trade can make a big impact in a short period of time.

We were considered a crap team treading water at the end of 2017 by many in the media and on this forum. None of us would have dared to dream about what happened the following year.

It can happen with some players too. Mayne went from being a forgotten disaster to being a deserved winner of the norm smith had we pinched the flag in 2018.

For sure.
It likely would come down to those two, with McMahon with an outside chance (which I wouldn't be against -- has certainly had some good games)

Early forecast looks pretty wet for the game. Could dictate selection. Freo didn't handle the conditions well against GC.
Prob can't play too many talls then. Go for ground players. Ginni and McCreery would love those conditions..

Getting smashed every week is not a development program for a raw 19yo.
VFL is the perfect learning environment.
It's not good for supporters either. While blooding youngsters seems important, for supporters, having a wisp of a hope for a win is life sustaining.

Yes, he's shown enough with ball in hand in terms of both skill and composure at VFL to keep around.

I'm spitballing, as at the moment, he's pretty limp when he doesn't have the ball in his hand. He just looks like a poor athlete by AFL standards, who appears to play with low energy and competitiveness.
Gives me the impression he doesn't want to be there. Very poor body language. Be interested to know on what basis he was drafted on and as usual was just what we didn't need. Another supposed mid fielder.

For all the talk of only drafting mids - the only good mid we've drafted since Beams in 2008 is JDG, and he's a forward convert to the midfield.

INS: Pendlebury, Elliott, Ginnivan, Roughead, Cox
OUTS: C.Brown, T.Brown, Begg, Madgen, McCreery

I like McCreery but 3 disposals and 0 tackles is unacceptable. Especially the tackles part... 0 tackles for a pressure forward?

B - Quaynor Roughead Howe
HB - Maynard Moore Crisp
C - J.Daicos Pendlebury Noble
HF - DeGoey Cameron Sidebottom
F - Elliott Mihochek Ginnivan
R - Cox Adams Lipinski
INT - N.Daicos WHE Poulter Henry

Would like Macrae to get another run... Maybe he comes in and Poulter is the sub...

If Roughead is no good (I read somewhere he is a chance to play I could be wrong) then I would look to bring in Ruscoe/Murphy to replace Madgen.

I think this week has a few variables as to what might happen.

Doubt they take Roughhead to Perth.
So don't expect him back. Maybe half a game in the VFL just for some touch and a run?

Think Elliot is 50/50 at best.
My preference would be to leave him home (see roughy) and give his shoulder 1 more week.
We've consistently seen what happens when our players come back early.

Is this a 50/50 game where Elliot may make the difference (e.g. crows last year).....nope! so i wouldn't risk him.

Cox will come in for Begg.
Continuing to play Begg isn't helping him or anyone around him.
We're basically asking our mids to simply play off the oppo ruckman. Which isn't a learning opportunity for us long term.
Begg was given a game ahead of time. That's fine with me. He's had a taste of it and now knows what is required.
A stint in the VFL will help him understand the differences and maybe let him grow in confidence and 'dominate'.

We've seen him regress over the last 2 weeks and i would put his performance last weekend up there with Cox against Brisbane in terms of ineffectiveness.
So if you're going to be consistent with the players and team....he has to come out.

Cox has done more than enough as ruck at VFL (irrespective of who we have played, he has absolutely dominated the ruck. If it were anyone else people here would be losing their marbles that he hasn't played!)
Despite the long term vision for the club, you need to reward good performances.

Murphy / Ruscoe for Madge.

Either/or for me.
If i had to lean a way, i'd lean for Ruscoe as at least he's played a few games!
Murphy will be blowing up by half time....so big risk to take him off 1 game.

Comes down to whether we can combat Freo talls (conditions may slightly dictate this.....)

Pendles for Poulter

Gini for C Brown

That's probably all.

Reality is we can't keep making so many unforced changes.
So really, apart from changes related to injury ....its 1 unforced change for me (cox for begg).
