Simply allow players on the mark to move forward or back, but not sideways. Would achieve much the same as the stand rule, but eliminate a lot of confusion
Great idea in principle but trying to adjudicate would be a nightmare. How much movement off a North South plane would be allowed or tolerated? Umps have it hard enough as it is.

The big improvement is they can hit it flat to a teammate without having to kick it over the man on the mark.
Forwards that can work up the group, create space then wheel and hit a long low 55 m plus kick to runners leads to so many easy goals. Charlie Curnow is a devastating kick in those plays, he tends to play on so positioning of the mark doesn't come into play. Guys with the ability to mark and land balanced ready to go are so damaging in this type of play.

Cameron is even better than curnow at doing that and hitting a bloke lace out

More than 24 hours after the match concluded, I'm still chuffed with how we performed. A very even performance and the intensity and pressure numbers were consistent throughout the whole game.

Even with key personnel missing, we've been able to definitively see that our system holds up really well. Credit to Fly and the coaching group for producing a coaching masterclass to get us playing the way we are despite missing some significant talent. I've never been able this happy with our coaches for as long as I can remember.

In the context of the season, this is a significant win to hopefully launch our premiership credentials in the back half of the season. Just need to finish the job against North Melbourne this Sunday, and we'll be in a very good position heading into the bye and hopefully gathering momentum for the final third of the season.

On the personal front, I've almost never experienced this feeling as a supporter, but there's a sense of calmness and satisfaction with the current state of our club. We're the reigning premiers, we have great coaches that are always finding new and innovative ways to stay ahead of the curve and the playing group is always producing an entertaining and high standard of football regardless of the final result. That's why I don't get too agitated even if we lose. It's rare to experience these highs, but at the moment we're on a high at the moment as a football club and that should be celebrated and cherished.

Agree. This game & the Blues game have been my favourite so far this year. Both from a pride point of view because of our injury list & who has stepped up, but also pure enjoyment in the way we played in those games.

They’ve been perfectly fine up until the past two matches where they have spectacularly fallen from top four to tenth. I’m not buying that Melbourne is not a quality side. Collingwood isn’t supposed to be quality either given the personnel missing.

They've still had the same issues as last year though and their midfield has fallen off a cliff.

They've also been on the end of some hidings as well. Lions, Eagles and of course the Dockers.

I just think their era has come to an end. They have some big calls to make at seasons end.

Agree. This Nick was well beaten story is just rubbish. Melbourne actually wasted one of their best players on him, weakening their midfield to compete against the rest of our players

You could understand the ANB to Naicos move if he were playing half back, as it would have kept ANB playing his normal HF role. But to move him to a full time mid role on Naicos had an overall negative impact on the Dees game.

WHE demonstrated a perfect example of that on Monday.
That was absolutely brilliant by Will on Monday. I know precisely the play you’re talking about. Very impressive.

In a way our injuries might be a long term blessing - banged up bodies get a rest before the home stretch then (hopefully) final's. .... .. Pendles, JDG, Checkers etc
Getting games into some of our younger players has been another big plus.
We won't have to throw them unprepared into the cauldron of finals footy if we get injuries.

Good mates with Josh isn’t he? Get him out of that sinking ship and across to us ASAP

Unfortunately we missed the boat on that

Was hoping we’d lure him across before he just recently re-signed

Honestly thought/hoped the lure of being a Collingwood supporter growing up and playing alongside the Daicos brothers would be enough

The stand rule is a load of crap.
Like in the GF last year when Leggy was penalised for moving backwards, which shouldn't matter.
Most of the time a player is "standing" and the opposition player just runs around him.
Just pay a 50 if the player on the mark moves forward of it.

I actually like the stand rule

But like every rule in the AFL, the ineptitude of the umpires ruins it

I’m completely ok with players not being able to move side to side on the mark

But

Moving backwards? It shouldn’t be an issue, even if the ump has called stand

Also they should be maki g sure the man on the mark and the player with the ball are aligned. It’s farcical when you see the man with the ball 5 metres off the mark and the man on the mark is forced to stand on…no one? It’s stupid

If the umpires were doing their job properly, everyone would love the stand rule

So you like the stand rule and the umpires apply the stand rule according to the way the rules are written…….

And you’re blaming the umpires for doing their job because you think they should make up their own rules?

Agree moving directly backwards shouldn’t be an issue but that’s the way the rules are written.

If Goodwin was a legitimately good coach, the tag would have ended once Petracca was subbed off

They were effectively down 2 mids and allowed a spare in their forward line all to stop Nick

Yet they still got pumped by 6 goals

He’s a legitimately mediocre coach and always was

When I say “it shouldn’t be an issue” that would obviously require an adjustment to the rule as it’s written

Having said that, I still think common sense has room to prevail

Why would anyone complain if the umpires “did their job poorly” when the effect was a positive one? They already to do it poorly as it is and it’s always with a negative effect

I doubt anyone would complain if they just never bothered penalising a player for moving back even after stand has been called

Particularly when most of the time the players can barely even hear the stand call to begin with. Especially Collingwood players given were almost exclusively play in front of big crowds

I get your point, I just don’t think anyone would complain and the sport wouldn’t suffer for it

Someone in our coaching group, (Skippy?) has some brains.

Watched this last night and was fascinated by it. Incredible analysis by White and gave me a massively increased amount of respect for our assistant coaches

Love might be a tad strong. Tolerate might be more accurate.

So just got an alert about a new thread on the Swans board “should deliberate knee be suspendable?” citing the Petracca incident as precedent of course. Another reason why I wish I would not get these bloody Swan’s thread notifications. At a loss as to how to stop them. Help needed.
I got one as well. It would have to be the dumbest thread in the history of history. This peanut would have to be a 50yo who still lives with his mum. FMD, there is no limit to the amount of stupidity that comes up on BF sometimes
