Great win. Great vibe at the ground. The wizard will come good. Just needs to stack some more hit rating gear. Go the mighty fightings!

Absolutely, he is doing the hard stuff. Just not finishing it off. The rest of the comp should enjoy this next year while he sort it out. Because from next year he will be the best small forward in the game for the next 10 years. Does things most players could only dream of.

Luke Breust is about to have his first offseason/preseason goal kicking assignment.

Watto will be fine.

It does go to show how ****ed coaching pathways in Aus are for footy. My kid is going through them now and the first time anyone talks in a structured fashion about kicking technique is U14-15.

At the lower age groups where a good technique can be instilled there’s lots really zero work unless you get a volunteer coach who’s technically minded.

It’s no surprise that the international players who learn to kick from scratch as adults are usually the better kicks going around.

Love this!

There are some idiots out there who live their lives having found $50 and think, I'll probably lose it, or the dollar will be devalued, life sucks then you die.

They'll maintain, it's only Richmond, need to keep a lid on it, we suck, and your need to understand this like I do, because I'm clever and I recognise the light at the end of the tunnel may well be an oncoming train, but we only played Richmond, you can only beat who you play.

We lost to them last year ad beat them this year. W3 should celebrate the upward trajectory, not commiserate the injury that might not even happen.

It’s about us not the opponents. Has been for years now. That’s why the ‘difficulty’ of the draw analysis means less and less to me.

Six W from seven and four in a row is hawthorn contending form. Looking at recent glory years

Lost by a kick v 4th (current ladder) wins v 8th 9th 13th 14th 15th 17th

To make finals we now probably need seven W from next 9 play 16th 5th away 7th 6th (home) 15th 9th (away) then carlton 2nd at MCG

Tougher than the last seven, but we cn afford to drop 2 1/2 games then lead in to the two very winnable final games

In 2023 not winning v mid tier teams was a bust. Better this year

The team with the most difficult draw often wins the premiership, because they have had the best preparation.

As many have said, wiz does none of that at box hill. May have had more confidence with wind help.

But if our small forwards are getting involved further away from goals and it’s helping the team and winning, it’s no bad thing

I learned from volunteers and watching tips and clinics from VFL/AFL players.

Don't see many clinics anymore because the players can barely kick themselves ;)

I can’t Get to many games these days but every year I take my two eldest to see the Hawks v Tigers with their mad tigers supporting Nanny who has bought their Hawks membership since before they were actually born (their consecutive years are older than they are!). Safe to say I haven’t seen a win live for a while, which was a great change, but watching what the boys do live was fantastic. The stats of the game were actually quite even but our ability to get the ball to right players to set up and execute was the difference, the 48 point difference. We had 5% more scoring shots and made them count. I think the end margin could have been way bigger too but the Dusty 300 effect must have saved them. ;)

Super performance by us.

It's funny, you never notice players doing stuff badly / wrong until you do for the first time, and then you can't NOT see it (if you know what I mean)

Watson - the whole footy world will be looking for head-ducks now, and at just how rubbish his set shot routine is.
It's a shame, as he was brave as f*^K with that 1st quarter boundary line smother - which could have cost him some teeth - but that's all forgotten due to some very bad decisions to win frees he probably would have got anyway.

The set shot - you know, I know, and Watson knows, that he has a monkey on his back about kicking a bag at this level.
It's all in his head.
The self-induced pressure will eventually break and he will relax like he does at VFL level and kick straighter.

HOWEVER - until that happens, senior players need to remind him at set shots to just stick to the routine.
Stop chucking the ball around in your hands and run directly straight at where you want the ball to go!

Just remind him.

He's kid, and he's all bravado, as he's shitting himself inside - and that's absolutely fine - because he is playing at the pinnacle of his chosen career, live on TV in front of 90,000+.

He wouldn't be human if he wasn't!

Until he settles, until he truly believes he belongs, he will be a bit nervy - so it's up to a few of the boys to commit to getting around him before the shot, calm him a bit, remind him 'routine, routine, routine' - and he will be kicking bags of 3 and 4.

Ah, Ginni....

Ginni,Ginni,Ginni.....

Another who tries to hide his nerves behind bravado.

He has been so unsettled by the non-paying of free kicks to him in the first 10 rounds that it's really played on his mind. I reckon he feels aggrieved - and rightly so.

He has been poorly treated by the umps and some commentators. Very poorly.

It's affecting his confidence, and that's why he keeps taking an extra twist or turn when he should kick or handpass, burn a few teammates in open goal squares and take those bloody stupid kicks around the body that don't go 30m.

I'd like to think that both of these guys were speaking to a club sports psychologist between games, just to get some self-belief back into them.

This rascal crap isn't doing either of them any good.

They are both very young and probably immature kids who really need to talk to grown ups about self-belief, staying confident through the media pressure and accusations, and handling a hostile boundary crowd.

The media commentary and coverage about these two is simply excessive, so I hope the club are protecting them as much as possible.

And guys, stop gobbing off to the crowd, as one day you will gob off to the wrong one. Not worth it, and Watson did it 2 or 3 times on Saturday - again to hide his nerves with bravado.

Also, why are the stats across a couple of platforms saying we had 101 interchanges?
Sounds like there was an issue with the tracker at the game - people were saying that we had 0 interchanges left as early as late in the second.

My assumption is that the majority of platforms are just pulling their data from the same api which would reflect the afl app values. Champion data I believe do independent data which accurately showed our interchanges at 60 something.

Because they hit higher percentages with the around the corner kick.
It's that simple.
You can want them to kick it the way you grew up watching it, or you can just accept that todays elite players who have been the best at their age groups their entire lives want to give themselves the best chance to score.
They've kicked the drop punt and seen very limited results, in fact goal kicking is a skill that has never really improved largely because players have tried hitting the center seam of a football via the drop punt, and any slight veering away via the drop of the ball or run in causes it to be impossible to kick dead straight.
They practice the hell out of it, the around the corner, and the coaches not just accept it but run drills for all players to hit them that way, even from straight in front.
Plenty hated to see the drop kick disappear, the torpedo become just a long forgotten myth.
You'll either accept the way things are going or just be mad incessantly the rest of time.
Judging by wattos output I’m unconvinced that the around the corner works for him.

Annnd now to someone else I cannot unsee doing poor things.

CJ.

He clearly got some robust feedback during the week about his questionable desire to attack the ball or the contest culminating in him letting himself and the team down under the high ball with 3 mins left Vs GWS last week.

He got immediate harsh feedback from Weddle who had to run 20m to cover the GWS forward. That clearly was a focus of the Monday briefing and I'm sure CJ talked things through with Sam.

Main thing was - the players saw it, and a couple reacted on field.

This Genie doesn't go back in the bottle I'm afraid.

He's done it all career, head-ducked a couple of times prior to his injury - got feedback from opposition players both times as well.

Got injured - Out for a longtime and came back.

No criticism from me about him being tentative in the first 2 back from a year off.

But it wasn't getting better. He wasn't attacking the loose ball. Jumping into contests.Standing under the high ball.

Then last weeks very poor effort at the end.

So to Richmond on Saturday.

I was out of my seat.
Fist-pumping.
Shouting praise at CJ for those 2 huge contests in the opening quarter.
Crashed packs and marked.

The players knew. Hardwick ran 40m to pat his behind and talk quietly - praising him - so clearly the players / coaches had given CJ feedback - what a response!!

And then, apart from another tackle later on leading to a set shot for HTB, all that desire just seemed to drift away.

By the second half, he was back to avoiding contests - he actually ran around and ignored 2 contests in the second half rather than mark or spoil or just get involved.

Phoenix Spiceresque.

The stupid thing is - he averages 2 tackles a game. He can do it. He choses not to.

The players noticed.

I can tell you right now, 3 of our most committed back 6 all looked at CJ and then at each other when CJ just chose to not get involved and stand off the contests when we were under a Richmond attack.

I, and others I was sat with, saw it clear as day from my seat.

When players notice one of the guys aren't cracking in, it causes tension.

I have no idea what Sam can do - CJ can do it - he just decides when he wants to.

That won't work in this team.

Ward, Weddle, McKenzie and MacDonald all came under criticism from multiple posters for being soft at the contest last season.

MacDonalds carried on into the first couple of rounds of this one!

But they all decided to change - and they have.

Weddle went from shitting himself on a regular basis to being absolutely fearless. Crashes in. Flies backwards into a pack.

Does not take a short step. Incredible turnaround.

Ward and McKenzie both turned their respective corners when during a game they were in, they each at some point were faced with a choice.

Take the hit and the hurt but win the ball OR avoid the contest.

They both took the hit and have never looked back.

McKenzie takes some brutal hits every game, and doesn't break stride.

MacDonald is probably the best of the lot.

I don't think he even knew half forwards had to defend. He certainly didn't.

Man, credit where it is due, he has reinvented himself.

Tackling harder.

Hard at the ball and man.

His two way running yesterday was awesome. He learnt and adapted.

And that's the issue - CJ chooses not to.

CJ gets dropped Vs WCE for Finn (tag on Harley Reid) - has to be.

CJ has to win back the trust of the playing group. They've seen it, don't like it, made it known.

If he can't or won't, a fresh start for CJ elsewhere might be for the best, so he can start again.

This rascal stuff? This over-celebrating after goals and at the end?

He knows he's letting himself and the team down, hence the bravado.

Blokes like Dylan 'Cat' Stephens, Jeremy Sharpe, Zac Fisher are all known to be soft at the contest at times, but all found another club where, for some reason, they aren't pulled up.

This Hawthorn side that's building to be something special - this ain't one of those clubs.

That was just a disgusting read all round. The CJ hate is very strange.

Wish we had the Swans again in the second half of the season. Be great to measure progress against the comp’s clear best after they smashed us first time around.
Personnel changes from that game: then we had Serong, Harry, Seamus and Finn in the side; now in their place we would have Wiz, Calsher, CJ and D’Ambros.

he's bloody good at turning 6 points into 1 that's for sure.🤣

Once he chills out and gets over his mental demons in front of goal at AFL level he's going to awesome. Play every week.
He can definitely hoof the ball 40-45 metres no problem. Has being doing it for Boxhill. I wonder if AFL level repeat efforts are leaving him that little bit more fatigued, causing him to lose confidence when taking a shot from long distance.
