Are you guys talking about the Daniher one? Where he was called for an unrealistic attempt in the ruck? Certainly a rule I've never heard of...

I thought at the time it would've been completely realistic if Ratugolea didn't block his ability to reach the ball.

There were a couple of new rules last night I've never heard before... was an interesting game.
Nope was Oscar in the middle. What I will say is at games there are rusted on Lions supporters with no idea about the rules.

Let’s be honest some of the players don’t understand the rules, case in point was Hipwood not understanding you can’t kick a guy in the marking contest

Wonder if it’s planned that kids like Dev, Prior and Kiddy will be on the bench quite a lot in the first half and can give us some run late when the sting is out of the game.

That one isn't the best example - I can't recall a similar variation of the umpires paying that one. In general it's only ever if there are studs contacting waist high or above, not getting someone in the side of the leg. There were another couple in this same game (one by Daniher and one by a Geelong player) that went completely uncalled.

It's Reiwoldt's best weapon.

That rule has never been clarified. It seems that you can do just about anything with your legs from behind as long as you take the mark. Otherwise it's a potential free for interference /in the back whatever, unless you're Reiwoldt.

I've never really understood that rule ,if a rule even exists.

hipwood was a deliberate kicking action and deserved to get paid. A prime example of why the rule was bought in and to me wasn’t a legitimate attempt to make.

very different to other cases during the game

I didn’t think there was much force in Hipwoods kick and it made contact to the opponents thigh. It was unlucky

Linc's highlights reel is growing exponentially
I remember the calls for him to be dropped over the last couple of years , ringing a bit hollow now as they did then. Those on the need to be dropped list still include Ah Chee, even when the game's not a quarter old , Prior ,well it's more or less accepted that he'll struggle to hold his spot, McStay seems to be well off the list now and even those who don't like him accept he's there for the long haul , Adams as recently as last week ,hopefully he's put that to rest because he's a must play against the better teams imo , Birchall , well those who've never liked him have really gone to town when ironically he didn't play , and Zorko till recently when even those who kept knocking him might have woken up that he's an absolute champion.

We had Robbo at the start of the year but he's now in the good books. Hipwood too, though not counting those calls because they were ridiculous. Fwiiw I think Ah Chee is wasted in the back line and offers a lot more than Coleman down forward at this stage of their careers.

That middle part of the second was the most influential I've seen the umpires on a contest. Playing several touchy frees all one way and not paying a free when Hawkins slaps Prior in the face

Then we got frustrated and gave away more frees. Perfect example of how poor umpiring influences a game

I think its taken McCarthy until this year to get to full fitness and confidence in his body to do the incredible things that he's always been capable of but not doing consistently due to his injury ravaged past.

Adams is in the same category. He just played his 50th at 27. So if he stays on the park he's just going to keep getting better. Likewise Daniher who is just getting used to his new role and with some consistent game time might eventually ditch a few bad habits that are very Essendon like which he seems to dish out every now and then.

And then the Dev fumble over the boundary which was clearly a mark. Geelong had about 10-12 decisions in a row go their way

It was mind numbing to watch. The free against Daniher in the ruck inexplicable. We could've gone into half time 10 up . I believe the umps are probably doing their best but that 10 minute period just looked suss tbh.

That's an exceptional result in Brisbane. Highest rating program from 7:30 onwards and went until after 10pm.

Hopefully that means they're on the main channel more up here (an idea which to be fair, 7 seem to be warming to)

Yeah, no disrespect to Geelong, but we should have won that game by 70 points. Our inaccurate kicking and questionable umpiring decisions cost us off that.

fagan would be nuts if he did it. In no way should Birchall play ahead of Payne nor should Lester play ahead of Madden. Our defensive 50 last night was perfect.
Yes they looked good last night but two things. Geelong's forward entries were overall horrible because we applied the most pressure up the field that I've ever seen from this current Lions team. And secondly Birchall's had a really good year and consistently been one of our better players.

I'm happy enough to play him or not, we just need to get the mix right. He was crucial in that cut throat final against the Tigers last year, really lifted himself to a level I didn't know he had left in the second half.

I think Birchall is still a pretty good footballer, but watching last night i'm reminded about what McStay did to our Forward 50. McStay's inclusion has made our forward 50 work effortlessly and the players gelled immediately upon his inclusion. I felt the same thing happened last night. Payne's inclusion felt like the missing piece and our defensive 50 finally felt right to me. While Geelong's inside 50 entries were not the greatest, you have to remember that we barely had more inside 50 entries than they did, yet we had significantly more scoring opportunities. That wouldn't have happened if our defence didn't perform as strongly as they did last night.

So who’s likely to get suspended /fined?
Big O high contact on Blicvas?
Robbo high contact on Parfitt?
Charlie jumper punch on O’Conner?
Any others?
Will be interesting to see if the AFL does anything.

It's one game.

I don't think McStay has done anything to our forward line except be a better player than anyone else we have for that role. I'm sure if Birchall played last night everyone would be saying the back line gelled impressively.

Overall there's too much focus on who should be in or out or retired . They're all good players . I don't think our performance is that much affected by who plays in the top 26 or so on our list as long as we don't have 2 or 3 critical players out at the one time.
