It does seem that our forwards often run to awkward spots for the kicker as well

Brisbane are good at isolating a player inside 50. Often we had them about to take a long range shot only for Berry or one of those other guys to drift into space and get hit up 30 to 40 meters out in front. Our forwards all look like a pack of starving dogs when a bone gets thrown in. They look like they are fighting each other.

I thought we tried our arses off but it looked like a class and experience gulf. We were trying to hold back the dam wall and they kept coming. Again we made them take low percentage shots but weight of numbers broke us down eventually.
Nah I don’t agree with that, how many times did they have blokes 20m clear in the middle or their forward half. We tackled hard but no one wanted to put in the effort to run defensively. Effort was really poor last night imo.
Yeah he was decent, but a fair way off something like a May, Sicily, Stewart, etc. We need to get to that level of interceptor. Will make it a lot easier for us if we can have 1 or 2 strong defensive interceptors
Imo, Wilkie is our Sicily, not Battle.

Eg we had a 2 ok 1 running back goalside. We needed 1 player to hit up to the kicker and we would have had the short kick or the long into open goal, but they both just ran together goalside. Ammos players would often work something like that out

not all doom and gloom.
A year of exploration, the known commodities doing their usual inconsistent things in 2023 but we’ve found players for the future in Owens, Nas, Stocker, Caminitti, Winghager and Pou.
We’re still in the box seat top 8 finish, and in a year when many tipped us for bottom four this is a terrific outcome for our younger brigade.
Plenty to like about where we’re at as a club, some further fine tuning of the list, some development in Keeler & Van Es and we have a pretty great young core to take us forward.

At the game up on level three effort looked excellent but class and quality looked a level down from Brisbane. Steele is playing with pain killer, he couldn’t kick anywhere near his usual level and looks in pain. Even Gresham was working hard but just has no confidence or skill at the moment. I wanted someone to blame but we just weren’t good enough.

I wasn’t there and that’s usually a lot better to see that stuff but I can’t work out how they had so much space inside their 50 and through the corridor over and over and over again if it wasn’t effort.

It is amazing how we looked like a well drilled team the first 5 or 6 rounds and now look like we're playing chaos ball. We're carrying a few niggles, but that doesn't account for a lot of the chaos ball we're playing.

I'm thinking maybe due to our success it's put expectation and pressure on and caused us to start playing like headless chooks.

In my view, forget about finals - just play the right way so it gets ingrained and let the results unfold

Yeah 100%. Wilkie is being forced to cover too much defensively tho and he is also much better than Battle defensively. We'd be good with 2 Wilkie's, 2 Sinclair's and a couple of Owens and NWM's

I mean if we’re just doing wishlists I’ll have a couple of peak Jeremy Cameron’s a Darcy Moore and a couple of peak Judds.

The three we’ve got can work back there we just need them knowing and executing their role. I don’t wanna ever see Doogs outside the defensive 50, Battle should rarely get far out either.

Don’t get me wrong if someone or something comes up worth pursuing then sure but we have way more pressing needs than the back KPDs

We are really missing Clark. Another quality user to go through the middle, he was starting to play some good footy in there and could burst and play huge quarters at times. We need to get him signed up asap, going backwards if we lose him.

A big red flag before the game was comparing the injury lists. They're hardly missing anyone. It's been the story of the last few years but we need to hope we can get Clark, DMac, Jones, Billings and Hayes fit, having those players in the mix would make a big difference. I don't see us beating many good sides with our current mix.

How did you view Sharman tonight?

I think the recruiting manager at Woodville was licking his lips at the prospect of getting Sharmy back to the club to inject some much needed AFL experience to their list.

Battle with 9 intercepts last night
Our back 50 struggling because we have no midfield

To me it all comes back to the midfield. I round one Steele, Crouch Byrnes, Sincs all over 25 possessions and Wilkie, Stocker, Hill, Wood all had great games. Clark and Gresham with 18 and 17 disposals. Bytel, Battle and Owens all over 15 touches and the only players with low numbers were the forwards who were efficient with what they did get.

That's a very even contribution with no stand outs doing the bulk of the work. It was all very team first. Now we have Crouch and a lot of passengers. You aren't beating much with that.

Agree 100%. Not saying we don't have gaps in other areas, but the midfield just is constantly beaten.
Granted Lyon left Windy and Pou there quite a bit, but the leaders were carved up. To drop Ross ( who I am not a fan of) and replace him with Paton was curious to say the least.
We have cried out for mids for a decade, bet we go for TDK, Bergman, and next year King.
It is so so depressing.

The pressure rating in the first was appallingly low. Don’t know where you and others are finding this “effort”.

Sort out the midfield.
10 years of mediocrity
Will never go anywhere with that midfield-they get their hands on the ball-but fumble ,make bad decisions -even if we do win a clearence its scrappy-high slow kicks to the forwards-why he does not try sharman down there is beyond me -I came to the conclusion last night -that we are just a good ordinary team-no better no worse - and with that i am in a much better headspace

I thought the effort was there but as everyone has mentioned the list is half baked. When better midfields than ours are adding players like Dunkley, Hooper, Tarranto, Mitchell were going backwards while we wait for teenagers to come on. We were +21 tackles which says effort was good.

Max King needs to stop cupping his own farts by the looks.

Until we can manufacture more marks inside 50 were in for a frustrating watch. Brisbane showed last night that it’s possible with smart entries.

And despite the sugar hit early, we all knew it.
Our youngsters coming through are looking good - but a lot of work to still do on the list.
Ross mentioned “personnel” last night. Shouldn’t really be a surprise to us.

You may be right, but I think Battle and Howard are just not good enough defensively which means Wilkie is trying to do overtime - poor bugger is going to lose his hair soon!! Battle should be able to be that interceptor tho if we use Wilkie defensively, but not sure he has it in him to become elite in it. Maybe Sharman could

Yep, will make bad decisions when youre constantly under pressure.
Shit high kicks/slow into fwd 50 is the classic “idgaf, it’s your problem now”.

couldn’t agree more. Last terrific mid was Stuv and he did it by himself

Our mids are ****en terrible. Watch against all oppo when we do get first use we’re swarmed and have to fight tooth and nail usually resulting in another ball up. Either that or if we’re lucky we just hack the ball forward with no control and hope it lands near one of our players.
When the oppo mids get first use it’s nice clean spread which has the effect of making all our mids then having to bust a gut to get down and help out the defence which then has a cascading effect on our petrol tickets for the rest of the game.
I can see why 🆘 is keen on tdk.
