Autopsy Round 16, 2023 : Hawks get the Blues

The two Ruck experiment hasn't worked. Both Reeves and Meek offer nothing around the ground, or as a forward 50 target. Much rather get games into Ramsden, or Ryan.

We can only play two of Breust, Greene, and Wingard each week, as they are all poor defensively. I'm hoping to see O'Sullivan given a game soon to give us more zip and aggression.

DGB must play next week. Forward, Back, I don't care... he must be given a decent block of games to adjust to AFL level. He has the talent and the hunger to make it.

Rubbish application and attitude throughout. Was a glorified training drill from start to finish. Not 1 pressured passage of play for any of their scores. Just a shambles of a display watching from level 2. They showed us zero respect by halfway through the 2nd qtr and quite rightly so. There not even that good we just didn't even try and when we did something happened and we scored regularly (3rd qtr) proving the point there not much chop. I get this is a process but your not going to get people turning up to games if you look disinterested as a team. Alot of supporters were leaving way before the siren all saying the same thing. Needs to be addressed quickly our attitude week to week.

I'm not as pessimistic as everyone is here. I was actually at the game and I can tell you the effort was there but the execution inside forward again was disconnected.

Our players still haven't worked out where to place the ball inside 50.

Our forward line is still our weak link. Lack of spark, inability to keep the ball in there with pressure and bad running patterns. We've never replaced Rioli or our other gun forwards.

I'm hoping McCabe and Curtin will come and help with KP stocks and improve our forward line.

Panned out exactly as I predicted - pretty obvious it would happen with the outs we had. Still confused by Kosi going out for Greene - I just think he is more competitive. So disappointing that he lacks confidence with conversion

Green converts those first few shots and who knows what happens, but there are some players who really do need direction and that seems to be lacking and I don’t think it’s just the loss of Sicily.

Had nothing to do with the outcome, but umpiring continues to amuse me - Just want them to be consistent with the calls

Couldn’t make it today as I had a 1st bday but just finished watching the replay. I really hope we show improvement next year on these sorts of games. We either win or lose by 10 goals, it has to be all in the head. Reeves is wearing thin on me, he offers absolutely nothing around the ground, at least meek has a bloody crack.
Also, I hope no body takes this the wrong way but we are the hawthorn football club, our home jumper is a vertical brown and gold stripe, why are we wearing the indigenous jumper again?

I could go on about playing 2 Rucks who have no clue about playing forward, but I done it to death, mystifying

We lost any chance of winning at the selection table, probably the slowest team we have put on the park this season

Time for DGB to come in

Brockman Impey come back in
Butler Morrison out, Morrison was ok but we need pace in the team

CJ was good early for BH, but he fell away, probably fitness, wouldn’t be rushing him back

Like MacKenzie to get a string of games together without being the sub

Think Nash may need a rest or be managed for a week, his form has dropped off the last 2 weeks, looks flat, if Nash gets a rest would bring in Stephens or Long

Frost is cooked, poor effort of a tackle late in the last, where Fogarty brushed him off with ease and ran in and kicked a goal

I don't care. Let's see the vertical brown and gold stripes. That's Hawthorn!!!!
I agree. It annoys me that every time we got interstate we don't wear the brown and gold stripes. Just pointing out we won 2 in that jumper this season

Worth remembering, we had 18 players under 100 games out there today, 12 of them yet to play 50 games.

No other side comes close to playing this many kids.

Positives
Ward was solid first up
Weddle just seems to be able to get involved in a lot of the play.
Day was really good apart from the usual missed targets. Almost the only one who looked like they were trying to lift us into the game in the first half.
Harry was good and it stood out in a sea of rubbish early.

My favourite part was when Dan Houston kicked that goal after the siren.

Third quarter okay too.

The one big takeaway from the last 2 weeks is how much we rely on our midfield. They are on top we are competitive in games.

As soon as they drop slightly or have an off game we just get demolished.

We don’t have the forwards or backs (especially without Sicily) to make up for when our mids aren’t on.

Fergus Greene was our lone leading target today and needs to stay in the team. Never should've been dropped

I was sitting on level 2 with greens number 1 fan kept going on about how he gets separation but we don’t kick it to him

It’s like everyone has lost belief since Sicily was kicked out for 3. Terrible game. Would be very happy if I didn’t see frost and wingard play again. Play kids. Because this is surely not working.
Agree. Wingard is too slow, and Frost is just a liability. I’ve been a fan of Frost and his tenacity, but he his basic skill errors just kill us.

Went with my boys today with low expectations.
First half was an abomination!
North/WCE would have put us to the sword today.
Beer was my closest friend in the first half. Used halftime as a breather and carried out an autopsy.
Nothing seemed to go to plan (if there was a plan)
The backline was like a ‘madwoman’s diahorrea’ ….all over the place. Amazing what no Sicily can do !
The forward structure or lack thereof was evident from the start.
Kicking balls deep into the pockets or straight to Veitering vas unacceptable!
Not once , not twice but three times
The Ferg Burger had dots from the right hand pocket (which he is a right footer) and subsequently kicked 3 points.
Whereas our little blue bagging opponents choose to centre most of their opportunities!!! Go figure
The lack of defending, especially from Scrimshaw , was inexcusable!
Continually allowing his opponent 15-20m head start was perplexing. Enough that I consulted those around me, who in turn were just as perplexed!
The manhandling of Lewis was more evident than a nun in a brothel. (But I digress) To his credit he got on his bike and worked hard to make himself a target.

After halftime (the 3rd quarter at least) the boys seemed to show some ‘ticker’ - the crowd responded in kind and we were actually looking like an AFL team there for a bit.
Blues got to iffy goals (inc a Frosty gift - will leave it at that)
The score, albeit irrelevant, was getting a little more respectable - until the men in blue decided “not on my watch”….and the game again faded away.
The damage was done late in the 3rd quarter, and the energy at the start of the 4th quarter seemed to evaporate.

Players that impressed me :-
Weddle after a disappointing first half, seemed to find it in the second half. This kid has no ceiling.
Day - my goodness this guy oozes Hawthorn. Needs lots more support.
Worpel worked hard
Ward - tried hard like Worps
Seamus - for a newbie, he gives 100%

Players that failed to impress :-
Frost - bad day, really not sure what he offers which in turn impacts others
Reeves - today he really should have dominated but didn’t- around the grounds offers little
Wingard - apart from an inspirational piece of play leading to a goal - he is treading water
Scrimshaw - bad ! Decision making , kicking choices/efficiency was doing my head in. He is slow, looks lethargic and often makes poor choices.
Breust - cameo appearances only, which for a senior player is unacceptable
Greene - harsh but not sure he is AFL standard ,needs replacing next year
Nash - not sure if it was a bad day at the office but I thought he stunk it up (sorry Tassie Cryptik)
Butler - did nothing to justify more senior time

Apart from a 3rd quarter glimpse, I left deflated and unsure how our team looks for 24/25

Blues are basic at best but we made them look a Top 12 team - and that pisses me off.
