I don't think the argument should be about what McLean/Amartey offer on an individual level as compared to Buddy, it should be about how the forward line collectively performs with any combination of them in it.

McDonald, Amartey, and McLean have been the key forwards in all 3 of our biggest scores this season. Admittedly not against great teams - Hawthorn, Richmond*, and West Coast. But it is a difficult point to ignore.

*Amartey was obviously subbed off early, but he still chipped in with 2 goals.

Just put $5 on
Swans, Brissie, North, Dogs, Pies to win.
So after I win $280 and am thoroughly enjoying my time with bottles of rum and buxom women.. The Swans will be in the 8!!

All fantasy, I know.. Swans will be in the 8, but alas no rum and buxom women for me.. will pay the electricity bill instead

Ps.. it was bloody hard to back the dogs and the pies! definition of irresponsible gambling

Whenever Hawkins is rucking in the fwd line, I hope someone tackles him immediately (legally) or Hickey tries to jump up to get first touch on the ball.

That brings back nightmares! Surely we'll be all over it this time around.

Most premiership teams have had one unstoppable weapon that opposition teams just can't do anything about (Buddy's 60m bombs, Dusty's stoppage goals, Gawn's tap work)

Geelong have TWO of them (Hawkins' rucking and Blicavs as a mid)

It's just unfair, but also makes me think they have kinda underperformed over the last several years when you think about it.

I’m just going to say it:

If he’s fit enough, I hope Buddy plays VFL (instead of the club pretending he’s injured).

The VFL kids would gain a massive amount & that’s a far better outcome than having a fit Buddy sit on the sidelines.

I just worry that we’re too hung up on legacy / status issues.

People keep suggesting that we play Buddy on the wing. Why? Because Richo did it in his later years? The days for Buddy roaming the wings are long gone now for the following reasons:
1) Wingers have to cover as much or more ground than any other position. They are required to be attacking into the F50 then the next moment they are streaming back to block up the D50 and do it again and again. Maybe a younger Buddy might have had the tank or the speed, but not at his current age.
2) A tall winger (like Richo) is used as an outlet from defence and one of their strengths is their marking - which is why Reid is also so good as the outlet. Marking is NOT Buddy's strength.

Yes, Buddy is a great field kick, but if you put him on a wing then he can't outmark a 6' opponent and would get run off his feet in no time and wouldn't be able to catch up any more - let alone even bend over to pick up the ball, so that strength is negated. His strength used to be his athleticism as well as his booming kick (the very attributes that may have previously made him a good winger) but both of those have decreased with age.

So where is his best position now? This is the problem. Buddy is a forward who had a couple of exceptional attributes that have now been reduced from 'freak' level to 'foot soldier', so do we persist with him and try to invent positions on the field for him before others who now have higher ceilings, or do we ask him to take a back seat as his work is now done and it is time to take a break? I think the hardest call of all is to tell your hero that he is now mortal.
Fair points! Richo had great hands and would often mark that long down the line kick on the wing!
It looked we had a total team mentality against West Coast, selfishness out the window around goals.. Buddy's pressure/tackling can be elite so I think he could still be highly valuable around half forwarded when we're trying to lock the ball in? And his kicking skills/decision making would set up a few goals! Instead of being the guy at FF who we bomb it to far too often.

We will lose if we focus on Dangerfield and him being under an injury cloud.

Last time he came into a match under an injury cloud against us he was typically damaging. Better to just focus on our own game and turning the pressure on them across every line.

If anything leave Dangerfield and his ego alone so that he crashes a pack and puts himself at risk.
