Autopsy Round 17, 2023 : Hawks go down to Giants

Lewis 0.1 to Hogan 4.1 a big difference today. We really missed the ability to create any real scoreboard pressure. Not all Lewis’ fault, he was well held and our entries were poor.

Some great efforts though today, particularly our midfield dominance. Plenty to like.

Love how we rate 2 different players differently for the same sort of game.

Kosi hasn’t lit it up this year granted, but if he posts stats that DGB did tonight, everyone screams for his head.

People here praising DGB for his efforts. Didn’t touch it in the 2nd half.
Low bar.

Please let the Riccardi story be true.
DGB is coming in off 1 VFL game as a forward and was playing against a backline with 2 of the better key defenders in the comp at the moment. Kosi getting lambasted after a few seasons of barely getting near it isn't the same as DGB doing it for 1 game.

Today was pretty much how our year has gone.

When our midfield is in top we are always in with a chance but our lack of forward line structure just kills us.

I looked at the forward line we named on Thursday and thought we are going to struggle to kick a score.

The fact we got close was testament to the massive effort of Newk and Worps.

Top two requirements for 2023 via either the draft or trading is another key forward and a couple of small forwards who can kick a goal / apply forward line pressure.

Considering it was his first game up forward for us, worth persisting over Kosi for now. Got caught under the ball quite a few times, but if he played with aerial confidence could offer a bit.

Ultimately, a good 3-week experience for our backs playing sans Sic. I’d expect us to be a lot more organised next week with the Blonde Prince back.
It is what it is, isn't it? It's another obstacle in our development; we need to learn we can't rely on one single player to be competitive.

True but maybe today was the first sign that they were growing into filling the gap Sic leaves. I thought the key defensive group looked the best they have since his suspension.

Lewis is a concern at the mo. I wish he’d lead more and wrestle less.

A better showing but disposal is frustrating - so many fumbles, half arsed handballs - was doing my head in. The definition of insane - kicking long again and again into Lewis and DGB when it didn’t work the first 10 times

Once again Finn did a great job - I so wish he had another string to the bow

Chad was good, as was Worps
This will be a good midfield in a couple of seasons

AFL needs to take a good look at that oval. It’s just lucky that serious injury has not occurred on that wing

Deja vu all over again
Kick it to Sam Taylor as we did in Gather Round
He towelled up Mitch and was the difference in the end.
Our forward connection and shots at goal let us down tonight.
Still got my concerns over our ruck stocks. Both Meek & Reeves not up to AFL level with Ramsden not even close to being ready

Would have been a different result if sic played.that said i was fairly happy the way we had a crack today.

It's almost like one has more experience and exposure as a forward.

Yep, i love Lewis, but he needs to become harder against quality defenders. Was bad last week and terrible today. Taylor was destroying him physically and mentally.
I hope he can learn from the towelings he's copped the last 2 weeks.
He needs to stand up against A grade full backs. At a minimum stop them marking it and bring it to ground.

Much better effort as a team. I'm still scratching my head as to why Reeves was out there instead of Meek. We were dominated in the air. Really, horribly, deplorable dominated. Blanck the best of our talls with 3 marks for the day. Scrimshaw and Lewis 2, DGB and Fergus 1, Reeves 0. That's wet-weather stuff.

That's got to be the worst delivery into our fwd line for the year. Poor DGB would have been wishing he was back in defence. Lewis given no silver service at all. Not one kick to advantage was awful.

Ffs just because you don't remember better games doesn't mean there weren't any. He had 32 and kicked 2 goals against Brisbane in 2021 and was the third highest rated Mid-Forward that season behind Stringer and Martin.

I reckon the point he was making he has been a terrible trade for the club which everyone would agree with .

Anyone can google “wingards statistics like you just have to try and belittle someone and prove a point to look like some hero.

Remember when you said the Giants are 1.7mill over the cap and then disputed Chad wasn’t being paid 750k a year. 😂

Give it a rest Kermit.

103 marks to 54. Do we need to establish a marking academy at Hawthorn? I know we are handball happy but we would have to be the weakest marking side in the comp I suspect - I guess the norf game will tell us. I don't count WCE. It's an art form and we aren't even enrolled in the class.

Thought Blanck had a great game, must have kicked the umpires dog at 3 quarter time though as had a few shockers go against him.

Midfield was good but our forward entries are still a problem. Never look like we are gonna hit up a lead. Taylor hurt us but we did ourselves no favours just blasting away to outnumbered teammates or to the favour of the defender. Its all very predictable that last kick we take. Fergus plays an old school forward role of leading up which I like but it's not working when we take so long to pull the trigger on those.
