Autopsy Round 17, 2023 : Hawks go down to Giants

A great effort but we kicked ourselves out of it. We can’t hit a forward and banging it in long and high will never work with our forward line.
However it is exciting to think what can do with a bit more experience.

Worpel was sensational today. Had a great year but today's game was the first time I've seen him play to the same level as his 2019 vintage.

Umpires yet again gave us no chance. All the 50/50 calls went to the AFL, I mean GWS. Coniglio had 5 behinds coming into today and of course jagged 3 straight today. Very overrated side who we should have beaten twice now.

That first miss from Day was inexcusable and probably killed off our chance. It’s a shame because he was excellent otherwise.

Our centre clearance work was first rate against a strong midfield (despite Reeves getting his arse handed to him).

Great games from Dimma, Finn, Worpel, Newk, Nash, Ward, CMac and Amon. Was great seeing Toby get blanketed.

Blanck did well considering the number of inside 50s coming in. Weddle and Seamus with another solid performance. Greene was decent and Brockman showed some flashes. Needs to finish off his chances though.

Lewis and Moore both need to do better. Both are leaders and both went missing today.

Really need to sort out the second tall forward. Hope Denver gets another opportunity as did okay considering the delivery.

While not expecting a win I’m a bit pissed we lost because we had them there for the taking (again). Young side that needs to learn how to win close games.

If the umpiring was judged fairly Blanck would be considered one of the best on ground. Don't let Hogan's 4 goals fool you.

He was sensational.

Only managed to tune into the game with 4.5 minutes remaining. Sounds like a combination of skills errors and the umps again conspiring against a win..

With the game in the balance a missed clear kicking in danger free kick to the hawks in defence that left the commentators stumped and a gimme holding the man to Hogan that sealed the deal for GWS.

I'll watch the game later; I can cop the skills errors and inexperience of the hawks, but it is gettting hard to watch how we seem to be punished by poor (or biased) umpiring more often than not.

Watched from half time. Good to be 'in a game', so some kind of step there.
As a collective our skills are way down, meaniing our entries forward are a mess, and clearances from D 50 are shakey, at best.

That was probably Wingards best game for Hawthorn...... which as serious indictment.
Not even close to where he was in the back end of 21

Forward line has been much better when Kozi has played. Not sure what Sam Mitchell and selection are thinking. He's been there competing during our best wins. Otherwise, too many (what I call) soft fumbles when players are fumbling easy short passes or simple handballs. Happened quite a bit in the first half. Not merely perceived pressure. Poor skills.

Team has several holes to plug and whilst there are some good signs from a few young players there is a long way to go. Need to be very active during trade period. I also expect that we might see some surprise departures although I'm having trouble reading Sam Mitchell's thinking. Neverthless, will be interesting to see what happens.

You can’t miss 4 easy shots in the 4th and blame the umpires
Saying the umpiring is poor and blaming the outcome on umpiring aren’t mutually exclusive.

Your first post said the umpiring waa fine.
People disagreed

Now you saying you can’t blame the game on them. Totally different subject.
I disagree with the first and agree with the second

Taylor v Lewis matchup the difference.

Completely destroyed our most important player.
And this is where Lewis needs to make the step up to Elite key forward if were going to go places. ATM he can't handle the elite key backs of the comp. Needs to get more physical to not get outmarked the way he is against them. It also doesn't help not getting anywhere near enough support around him to take the pressure off. It was the difference in the game today. We need another quality tall at the draft as an urgent priority. Forget more mids.

Never like losing but liked the effort .

Thought we might finish over them but just werent good enough .
Feel like weve turned the corner a little now

Shocking ground . And now we get to hear how great GWS are going all week despite the fact theyve narrowly beaten us twice 😁

In 2 seasons, the highest teams they have beaten is Adelaide and Geelong this year

Funny thing is, it’s the same for most teams, even right up to st kilda in 5th

How can 3/4 of the teams get soft draws for two years?

I don’t watch the AFL’s team, the Giants much but a couple of them just take the piss:

1. Coniglio: plays a kick behind the ball, picks up easy possessions, barely raises a sweat - did we nearly sign this guy?

2. Whitield: doesn’t even try to look as though he’s trying.

I guess they’ve got their $millions to spend when the AFL team finally retire them.
