So you'd rather we play McLean, Ladhams, Amartey from the start? And so 1 less small.

Because that's what we're talking about. The best sub from our named 23.

I would yes and sub one off if need be

Match report from open training today:

- very light 30 minute session. Stretching, jogging, some handball drills, a few ball movement drills (end-to-end) and then some goal kicking. It was 32 degrees.

- anyone thinking McLean might be reinvented as a defender - nope. He was clearly among the forwards through all the drills.

- Pete Ladhams didn’t line up with the forwards. Stayed firmly in the mids group (although it must be said: the end-to-end session was very brief).

- Papley looked fine. Hard to get a gauge on Grundy, but he definitely didn’t do any sprints.

- Nice guy award: Joel Armatey. Really engaged with the fans during the autographing session & even stayed on after the others had departed back to the rooms. Honourable mentions to Heeney, Sheldrick, Hamling and Hayward who were all very happy to chat.

- Sid Mitchell definitely there as a travelling emergency. No idea why he was named as an E in the VFL side.

- Gus signed my hat (squeeeeeal!)

Would rather McLean be tried than Logan.

Lobb has turned into a really valuable defender for the Dogs

Especially with Mcdonald not in the side.

I don't think Mclean could do it but you never know .

Makes more sense to me to move Mccartin back

Don't be a coward, DQ. We don't care about the nice guy award. We want to know the Rotten dirtbag award

Ok. Another week off football. But can someone talk me through the thinking of having Ladhams and McLean coming in?

I mean, 2 defenders come out. No defenders in?
I know TMac will go back, but geez, I'm not the BIGGEST fan of Paton, but he may have been a better call than Ladhams.

Bice into the 22, goes into the backline, just means we're less defensive on smalls, of which Freo don't have many good ones anyway.

Wicks on Bolton, Bice loosely on Frederick

There seems to be an assumption that Bice is ONLY an attacking flanker and not a serious defender. I don't think we know that yet. He might be, but then again, he might be an improvement on the defensive front as well. I'm watching with great interest.
Because that's what he's described as. Often bios will state if a player can also do one-on-one stuff reasonably well. Admittedly sites like RookieMe might not be the most reliable but it said areas to improve were contested work and strength.

I wonder if the inclusion of Ladhams has anything to do with Grundy's slow starts every game - he doesn't seem to start to make an impact until the 2nd half. If we start with the both of them and try to run Ladhams into the ground in the first half, we can then sub him off for a runner just as Grundy tends to come good?

I get that but it was a fair while ago. Also, he wasn't one of the high flyers.
He's a fair bit more mature now. My mind is open.

Same points in their focused review of him in the 2024 VFL grand final and an updated bio for last year's draft. He's played elsewhere on the ground in the past but reads as an outside player.

His werribee coach said during the week he can do both
