Discussion ROUND 2: St Kilda v Richmond

Jeez.....just read through some good posts and a whole heap of bullshit, I think a little bit of perspective is needed here. Yes we haven't won a game yet, yes we aren't in awesome form and no we didn't smash a bottom for team from last year.

So what? seriously who gives a flying ****. We have 2 points on the board after two games, (could have easily been 8) and are in terrible form. But it is only April FFS. I think all of the calls for heads, wholesale changes, changes to gameplan are off the mark. Probably some tinkering is needed but now is not the time for panic, as Roo would say, now is the time to stick fat!

To all those that are sick of the club, sick of the players sick of the rubbish....**** off, we don't need you. But don't try and jump back on when we are top 4 in August when we are chasing a flag.

I'm not sure how the deliberate behind was incorrect.

He was in the goalsquare, not in possession, with 2, 95kg Tasmanians bearing down on him. If he had tapped the ball through, that conforms to the "Under significant pressure, and I wouldn't have objected.

However, he chose to take possession and take on the subsequent pressure. Therefore, he could NOT concede a rushed behind. He did and was punished. Ball should have gone to Archer, the tackler though.

The rule doesn't say you can't take possession and handball it through.

The key issue is whether or not he was deemed to be "under pressure", which he clearly was.

Whether or not he handballs or not is not the issue.

Coupled with mortons slips catch that wasn't paid, they were very stiff.

Can't believe their midfield did such a good job on yours.

Grigg and delidio were awesome

Grigg is a good player, and got 40 possessions a few times against us in the VFL. Carlton obviously didn't want to pay him market price (fair enough I suppose when you're trying to keep the rest of the midfield together), but a great pickup for the Tigers.

Lids is just a gun.

I would have thought the umpire considered that his first reaction was to try and fend off rather than have a crack at disposing of the ball. He did contribute to becoming under pressure. If Blake and Gwilt's were deliberate then that one has to be penalised. Mind you, I'd rather all 3 be let go.

Personally I was more wtfing at the HTB call on the wing where the handball bounced off the forehead of the player applying the tackle, since last time I checked a handball was still a legitimate disposal even if rebounding off of a face. Something like the rushed behind rule is always open to interpretation and tantamount to "I like cheese, do you like cheese?" "I don't like cheese, I get sick from it" and a debate occuring as to the merits of of detriment to lactose intolerant people of cheese, both sides are, in the end, going to agree to disagree on certain points, however the underlying premise will remain different.

Finally, reason returns to the board, with the arrival of our seasoned posters. Honestly, where were all the doom-and-gloomers last year, that now have suddenly felt the need to come on here and tell us we suck?

It's not a great time for the club. Fine. But these crazy "cull-everybody-play-teens-sack-Lyon-rebuild-disaster-tragedy-death-destruction" posts are getting on my nerves.

deal with it

Stephen Milne - underrated by most and 16 other clubs would love to have him I reckon. Adored by Saints (I assume), loathed by everyone else (I assume)...but this bloke is a cracking AFL footballer - to label him solely as a "goal sneak" is not giving him enough credit...and he's been doing it for 10 years - almost always torches the Tiges - we've rarely, if ever been able to negate him.

Yeah Milney always arcs up against the Tigers, and thats why Tigers supporters have an inflated opinion of him.
If only Collingwood and Geelong supporters thought he was good.

I see, thanks for putting that in to perspective...the footy world makes sense again. I had a similar view of Kosi coz he has carved us up at times too - the same scenario with him I guess.

Maybe if you guys attack from the start you would have won.
You have the better side and go side ways and backwards.
I think it time to look for a new coach who wants to play attacking football.

If we had of kicked straight or ever tried once in front, we would have smashed you. Feel lucky you got us still in our grand final hangover.

Having watched the game again we surely should have won. The umpiring was interesting but the string of free kicks the tigers got in the last to clear our back line, win the ball on either wing, and have shots for goal really makes me wonder how they can complain. Not to mention booing Archer when lining up for goal just shows their true side, scum. Bit similar to the ones posting here really.

Desparate, dispicable scum, who could not even take us when we were mentally elsewhere. I had forgotten how bad they were, with their club being so irrelevant the past 15 years.

Off our board.

folks

didnt wanna put this on the main boards.....

on SEN this morning the suggestion was made that jason gram spoke out of line / gave a negative personal opinion on matters current to form etc.

likewise they had audio of goddard rebuking grams comments.

anything in this ?

I read grammy's comments and took it as "ross just stated that there is a lot of blokes out there jogging around and i couldnt give a shit who you are you will be booted out of the side for youth you lazy bastards."

Gram's comments were immediately post match so they were probably pretty raw although justified.

I like certain types of cheese. That should clear things up ;)

To me this deliberate rushed behind rule creates a grey area. Miss the target and the ball goes out of bounds, and it's deliberate out of bounds (regardless of pressure). Get it through the goals, the rules are different because there's pressure. I can't believe I'm going to agree with Mike Sheahan on this, but I do, and don't see why the rule is different based on the area of the ground it's done in. Maybe you shouldn't be pinged for deliberate OOB if pressure is applied. I think the defenders' job is way difficult as it is.

Single biggest issue I see with us at the moment is set shot accuracy. At least 4 goals should have easily been slotted on Friday night. We may have then won comfortably. Richmond were very good though, all credit to them. But do everything else as we've been doing but score 65% goals from all scoring shots, we win.

But I reckon goal accuracy (or inaccuracy) has cost us one GF victory, maybe even two. Do we even have a kicking coach? We need one. And maybe a psych person.

The grey area is pressure, personally I'm waiting for a full press and someone panicing, turning from 35m out and kicking it through the goal to reset the play. How many people will then be applauding when the side is given the ball back and a behind called because the bloke was under pressure and how many would go "come on if that's not a deliberately rushed point then I dunno what is" will be interesting to say the least.

Also, I posted elsewhere that goal accuracy is only the tip of the iceberg, the skill level of the players in general play has also been well down on this time last year.

Can anyone find the media of the Gram interview to post?

Nup - seems to have "disappeared".

Saw this though:

Ross Lyon has opened the doors but don't know if he'd like Jason Gram declaring kids should be brought into the team, as he did on SEN post-game Friday. Gram's right and everyone agrees. But coaching decisions should be left to the coach. The Saints requested audio of the interview and were given it, and on Saturday night, Gram said on Twitter: ''Don't u hate it when u say something and it comes out the wrong way.'' Admire his honesty, don't know if the Saints did.

No other team has had three chances in two years of getting to the GF like St Kilda has and they blew all three chances.Do they think they are going to get another chance this year?! My prediction is they will do worse this year.Does not seem like anyone is going to stop Collingwood this year they are miles ahead of everyone else in every area.

I'm sure people were probably saying this about us the exact same time last year when we killed the Kangaroos in Round 2 (105 point drubbing). Anything can happen in a season of football, I feel. Geelong supporters would know that first hand when they were rolled in 2008. Expect the unexpected.
