Review Round 20 v Collingwood

Another close game, another predictable loss. I’m not sure what’s more frustrating, going into every game without a ruck, or our terminal lack of genuine KPDs.

  • Wakefield & Paxman vs Jonas & Mackenzie, that‘s a 4-5 goal weekly margin difference right there.
  • Has DBJ ever won a 1v1 contest? When he’s not managing to lose his feet in a light breeze, he‘s kicking the ball blindly straight back to the opposition.
  • I’m a fan of Duursma, the 19 year old version, not the imposter that would currently struggle to get a kick in a school carnival contest.
  • Jase Burgoyne is a gun.

Well that was hard watching.

An opening quarter where Collingwood were winning some key stats but we were ruthlessly efficient. Then we decided that we were done and time to have a rest for a goalless quarter. Sure we eventually evened it up in the third term and finished with a rush but Collingwood were the better team, wanted it more and get the points. The scoreboard flattered us. Amazingly, had we taken our chances, we win that.

Some observations:

  • port let it out the back continuously. Multiple times we needed to take the body, win the ball or take the mark and failed. DBJ and Aliir were real culprits
  • Defensive match ups were horrible. Jonas on Johnson - their most athletic, fast and in form forward.
  • Defensive work of Dixon and Finlayson was atrocious. Cox and Cameron looked like star ruckman
  • Moving Farrell to the half backline what a master stroke, taking a fast booming left boot and best deliverer inside 50 and putting him as far from forward 50 so Collingwood didn’t have to stress about him, brilliant
  • What’s the point of Davies publicly whacking Duursma and Bergman if they’ll get games regardless of form but struggle for confidence (more Xavier than Miles)
  • Inside 50 entries were diabolical
  • The ability of smaller, undersized Collingwood defenders to out compete our talls was really disappointing
  • That was one of the first games were it really felt like we were a talented disorganised rabble. Defence was shambles, don’t know what that forward set up was and our centre work was smashed
  • Feel for Jed, kid being asked to play a role he hasn’t grown up as and doesn’t come naturally for him, in a dysfunctional forward line
  • Faz has really cost us this year by his absence
  • Aliir is devoid of confidence or maybe reverting to type
  • We were reactive all night. Collingwood made the move then our players rushed to catch up
  • We swarmed the Collingwood player with possession, which meant there were 3-4 free Pies’ players on the outside of the contest who were there for the quick give and overlap.
  • Clearly Wines and Jonas mean a lot to the boys to put in that performance for their 200th

Positives:

  • Burgoyne actually looks ok. Despite the tiny frame he is holding his own and that kick was composed and never in doubt
  • SPP has heart for days. Remove his effort all year and we are a bottom four side. Has worked all day, looked fitter and covered every hole we have had
  • Rozee and Butters were great.
  • Despite his move to the backline, Faz was really good
  • Boak’s goal kicking was back

Ratings are spot on this week, outside of a slightly bizarre high rating of finlayson. Our top ten were very good and our bottom ten or so were terrible.
  • McEntee should be delisted
  • Georgiades has an enormous amount of work to do an I'm not sure he will ever get there. The definition of a one dimensional player with one trick and currently that trick isn't working for him
  • Gray is just taking away a spot from a younger player. Farewell game and then that's it
  • Marshall had a poor game compared to his usual standard.
  • Jones and Duursma looked like they were getting up to speed of AFL. Duursma in particular had the worst first 4 disposals I can remember. And then by the end of the first quarter looked much more settled. Both need a block of time at AFL level.
  • Burton had his worst game I can remember in a long time
  • Aliir had had a sub par year and this was a sub par game.
  • We need a ruckman. Finlayson must have found some sort of trick to maximising his player rating score but the reality is that he is a decent second ruck but not a long term first ruck option
  • Dixon had a horrific game.

Something has to be done about georgiades’ kicking for goal. It’s pretty much school boy level.
Seems like yesterday that Jason Dunstall was drooling over his kicking technique- WTF happened? Must have had some one on one goal kicking sessions with Ken.

Is it the same comp?
I mean, the teams look the same but the venues... ?

Just noticed something about the above.

Port Adelaide 8 losses… 6 top 8 teams, 2 bottom 10. 2 in SA, 6 interstate.
Collingwood 9 wins…. 1 top 8 team, 8 bottom 10 teams. 7 in Melbourne, 2 interstate.

I know it it was reversed, it would be all over the AFL media about how soft our run has been.

I know you can only beat who you play, but thats about as misleading a good form line as you can get.
Beat 18th, lost to 17th earlier in the year, beat 16th, beat 15th, beat 14th twice, beat 13th, beat 12th, beat 11th. By a combined 9 goals.

SPP’s fitness really stands out. He covers so much territory so quickly.

So we played one extra at the contest all day to win clearances by 8 and every time we go forward they have an extra behind the ball.

Of course they take plenty of marks in defence.

Only changes with 5 minutes to go.

Hinkley you are the AFL's Forrest Gump.
You’d think after 10 years of it not working against good teams you’d try something new…

It’s a pity Collingwood never got 6 goals ahead. That’s when we usually go back to even numbers at the contest.

7 of the top 10 players today but no coaching problem whatsoever

Channel 7 should get an award for the coverage of the game.
It was perfect if you were a meth addict and didnt need a piss at the half time break
And Buckley, an ex collingwood player and coach was the most balanced and reasonable commentator on the day

edit @ 11:09 acts
sorry, my apologies, buckley is not a channel 7 commentator, apparently he is a fox commentator, which is strange because i was watching channel 7 and he was commentating.
