Review Round 23 = Collingwood 100-124 Brisbane Lions

Look, I love the octane, high velocity pressure but it's cranked up far too high at the minute. Too many players are rushing the one player and we are getting absolutely torched on the rebound with fast handballs into space.

Teams are moving the ball far too quickly in transition against us.

How many times tonight did 3 or 4 players attempt to pressure the ball carrier and not influence the contest, allowing Brisbane a chain of handballs all the way down the field?

It's very worrisome heading into finals.
I think we're actually failing to bring the high octane brand. And we're also failing to bring the defensive workrate. Some of the tackling efforts tonight were really deplorable.

As a result, we can't get it going forward with intent and we can't stop fast opposition ball movement. It's an ugly combo.

Let's pray we can turn it on in September. We won't last long in finals with the current levels of application.

Pies looking sweet the way I see things. Some here will look like complete fools after we win the cup.
Bring on the MCG
I admire your optimism, and wish I could share it. But 3 losses in 4 games is the stat which is most concerning. It’s not a trend we want to have.

Not fazed by that result, players out and still went toe to toe with them most of the night m.
Umpires as usual , diabolical.
We are the best side in the comp and will show that in September

I was out to dinner for a friend’s birthday so fortunately missed having to watch us lose.

I see we scored 100pts so some of our players must have played well? Who?

What happened to Ryan and Murphy? Did Ryan look any good before he went off?

We’re guaranteed a home final unless Port win by 100+. We were never winning this.

Vintage performance from Pendles.

Cox kept us in it the moment he came in.

McStay silenced the haters, another solid performance
I sort of agree about Pendles, Cox and McStay, but not your opening remark 'We were never winning this'. If I felt this way, I wouldn't bother watching the game.

Is there anyone who could come in next week for Lipinski? He has not recaptured much form or confidence since coming back from the shoulder injury. Maybe sub-consciously trying to prevent re-injury, but is a liability atm.

Only an extreme optimist would believe we have no concerns right now. Being on top of the ladder does not mean you are going to win the flag, 2nd and 3rd have won it just as often. We have some serious issues to sort out assuming we can sort them out that is. You can only assess what you see not what is possible in the future if the stars align. Again, although we seemed to square off the contests and clearances we do look slow in transition. Our defense still is too loose and get's caught out of position far too much and gives easy looks at goal. The pressure on their ball carriers was not where it needs to be again. When we get a few back we will improve but how much and will it be enough? We should be concerned. I don't subscribe to losing to contenders in the last month of footy. We may have peaked a bit early, just not getting our timing right. We really should be travelling like winners right now, not spluttering along under the guise of top 2 is locked therefore we can lower ourselves. Cats won 16 straight last year to win the flag after all, showing no signs of weakness.

A full strength Brisbane beat us by only 4 goals on their second favourite ground, hardly doom and gloom.

If the Lions don’t choke in finals I look forward to Collingwood with 6 key players back in meeting them at the MCG for the first time since 2017.

I know we lost but you need a new friend.

We are missing out top 3 players.

Got the outcome most were expecting.

Still concerned about the decline of our defence.

In reality though our hopes will succeed or fail on the back of our midfield.

It all starts from there.
Defence is some concern but I do feel a large part of the decline is to do with lack of pressure. Earlier in the year we prevented scores more from preventing inside 50s than defending them. With our pressure dropping of this has changed.

The hope is that this is a case of holding off for finals. It won't be a real problem till it manifests then, but definitely something to watch.

Bringing up geel last season is getting behind tiresome. This year is completely different so stop comparing it ffs

Another season that got away due to injuries to key personnel. Sickening supporting this club

Murphy should be fine for the games that matter. He’s just bloody sore.

The lack of class and speed in the middle has been exposed in the last month. Mitchell was terrific until mid year and then he has aged 10 years. he is now a liability and flow stopper. Pendles was great tonight but like last week his man ran away from him at stoppages too many times.

Now the lack of any tall defender is also an issue. Brisbane have 2 giant forwards but Macrae leaves IQ and Markov to battle with them meanwhile McStay and Howe are down the other end.

People thinking they can flick a switch in 3 weeks are kidding themselves. They are out of form and the zone was unlocked months ago. What's plan B?

Sure there are concerns, but top spot does give us 2 MCG finals and 2/3 sides in the top 4 hate playing there.

Right now Brisbane may look the team to beat, but they have a major hurdle to overcome.
