The fact we have to play home ground game at that cesspool is not on.
Rather sell a game to Adelaide oval than play there.
We certainly would then at least get a home ground advantage.

I think we are a mixture of bad luck to key players at the moment, but also of our system no longer working particularly defensively.

The midfield also hasn’t been winning either.

It’s felt like we were ready for finals a long time ago and these last few games are a nuisance. I sure hope cut throat finals wake us up and we have something better to offer.

To win a flag we will need to concede a good 5 goals a game less than we are now which is huge.

It won’t be so pointless when we bundle out of the finals in straight sets.
I agree with you. I would not be surprised if we lose against Essendon next Friday night. Then it is high likely that we will be bundled out in straight sets come finals time. I think that the honeymoon is well & truly over for 2023. The lack of an elite key forward & a pedestrian & pretty much one-paced midfield are being exposed. In addition, there are a number of defensive frailties that have come to the surface over the last 4 to 5 weeks. All in all, I think that we badly need to spend time & energy in the forthcoming Trade period & then the AFL National Draft in an attempt to rectify these fundamental problems. Goodnight & good luck.

Thought Frampton was again good on Daniher. Would like to see us play Frampton down back on Daniher and Moore running off Hipwood if we face them again this year. Howe can stay up forward and surely we can find a matchup for Murph.
Play Moore on Cameron. We have to do something different with him because he's torched us the last 4 times.

Dylan Grimes did it with great effect in Richmond's glory years.

Plan b? Degoey, daicos, fixes your midfield issues Moore fixed your backline issues and hill helps forward line. Pretty simple tbh. Stop watching if all of us are kidding ourselves. It’s not like we’ve made top 2 and have finals to play.
Not so sure on the first if JDG doesn’t regain his pre suspension form.

We had both playing in our full strength sides against Carlton and against Hawthorn until Nick got injured.

Moore has been off his game recent weeks too. Had plenty of goals kicked on him and done some shocking turnovers.

We’re not the team we were earlier in the year (which had plenty of injuries to key players).

If we are to go deep in September, match committee will have to make some hard calls.

Hill/JDG/Moore/Daicos all need to be in this side on Prelim Final weekend - don’t think we can have all of Howe/Adams/Mitchell/WHE in this side. 2 of that 4 probably need to miss.
If I was coach I would drop Mitchell and Lipinski with Adams teetering on the edge.

Under the circumstances im not all that bothered by the result

Between the venue, players we were missing and how poorly the coaching group (and selection committee) performed, 4 goals isn’t too bad of a loss

Play that game at the G and throw Moore, Hill, De Goey and Daicos in there and we win fairly easily.

Really poor coaching performance tonight more than anything imo

I think we're actually failing to bring the high octane brand. And we're also failing to bring the defensive workrate. Some of the tackling efforts tonight were really deplorable.

As a result, we can't get it going forward with intent and we can't stop fast opposition ball movement. It's an ugly combo.

Let's pray we can turn it on in September. We won't last long in finals with the current levels of application.
How many times did the sell us the dummy then walk past our stumbling defender to easy goal.

What should the coaches have done differently?

Torn. More than one way.

We fumbled and bumbled and they were clean. Albeit I counted 4+ goals from theirs that were luck based (good finish. But luck that it ends up in their hands).

I feel comfortable playing them in the finals. Very comfortable.
They don’t get the cheapies they do in finals (even though they should).

Cox completely changed the game for us.
Think it makes more headaches for the coaches: but he’s number 1 next week.

We haven’t played or run anywhere near what we can.
If that returns, we’re sweet…..if not. We’re toast.
Won’t really know until first final.

The only real concern I have out of tonight’s game is the backline. They’ve been scored against way too easily in the last month and tonight was probably the worst performance of the lot. They always seem to be caught out of position way too much and their ground ball game was non existent tonight. The Lions just swooped on every loose ball and made us pay big time.

I think our backs play a system that relies on midfield defense and when we allow ourselves to get run over at speed it sees us caught with our pants down.

As someone else mentioned.................surely the coaches saw the big difference in connection at centre bounce when Coxy was operating. That covers part of it and hopefully the injection of JDG, Hill , Naicos will cover the rest.

People need to realise this isn't a year like most others. All this talk of momentum and winning at the right time is valid, but with the same glass half full approach you can mount a case for any team to fail this year:
  • Port have fallen off the cliff worse than us
  • Brisbane's record at the G is putrid and they won't play there until the GF
  • Melbourne have inury concerns, forward line concerns, and Grundy concerns
  • Carlton likely coming from outside the 4 and have little to no finals experience in the past 10 years.

Form can change with the flick of a switch, and with our outs currently, there's still plenty of upside to our situation.

History can get f**ked.
Exactly, it’s all about clicking at the right time, whoever clicks will win the flag

Absolutely sickening game of footy to watch. Where do I begin? The 12 point difference in calls in the first quarter? (Frampton dragged down and Bailey goals, plus Pendlebury being shoved after a kick 25 out from goal). Or every single Brisbane forward nailing several goals from every possible angle? Or two balls landing on the goal line to start the final quarter being touched before a dodgy free the Lions way results in a Hipwood goal? Murphy’s injury which leaves us contending for a minor premiership with one below average tall defender? Tom Mitchell’s game? Charlie Cameron playing a terrible game and still booting 4?

I thought Brisbane were supposed to be the worst kicking side in the comp at goal, because they simply do not miss against us no matter where they kick from.

Not sure how even the biggest optimists can act like things are okay right now. You have to stop pretending there is a big switch they will flick for the first final and blow everyone away. It simply won’t happen. The team is slow, missing key personnel, bereft of confidence and chemistry, and far too ambitious for their own good. We are cooked.

They did switch off in the last 10 minutes. It could have got really ugly if they wanted to keep the foot on the pedal.

The one bright note as I sit on this packed train was Coxy showing once and for all how important he is to this team and our flag hopes.

It scares me to think an old codger in Mooroolbark can see the upside of big Coxy but a highly paid, professional coaching team cannot.

I want this bloody home and away season to end. We have been floating in this strange bubble with a huge target on our foreheads for weeks. Top 4 and top 2 locked in weeks ago and players mentally flat regardless of how much they try to kid themselves that every game must be played like it's your last.

The first final will tell us all we need to know. Are we in a holding pattern just waiting to explode out of the blocks come the first bounce of the Qualifying final or are we in a trough of poor form, lack of connection and lost confidence.
