Autopsy Round 23 Review - Saints second half demolishes the Kitty Cats

All the bleaters that dominant this forum going on about “the list” and “our shit midfield” constantly, I hope this match makes you revisit your defeatist opinions.

The sport now is about ball-movement, decision-making under pressure, and the ability for a coaching group to create a system that trains their players to execute all of the above.

It’s why you see a team like Hawthorn, with an ordinary list, catapult up the ladder: they are brilliantly coached.

Stop giving our coaches an out constantly by blaming the list.

Nights like tonight show that we can match it with anyone if our ball movement and system are right.

A very exciting win and I hope the whole club can use it to go into next year with the hope of winning the whole thing.

A Premiership has to be the aim every year. Stop being such defeatists about our list.

Tonight was a shining light in a bitterly disappointing year.

But hopefully it’s the start of something big for the whole club and the coaches understand the formula that brings success in the modern game.

Exciting stuff.

First 11 rounds when we had most of our injuries, we went 3-8 including 5 losses of 10 points of less.

Since then we've gone 7-4.

If the form of the second half of the season was kept up for the whole year, we'd win 14 or 15 and probably finish top 4.

Seems likely that the problems this year were about injuries not about coaching.

I hear you, but we wont win a premiership with that midfield, and although we looked a million bucks in the second half, we looked utter sh*t in the first half, and that's the kind of thing that has cost us too many games, but we got away with it tonight and a top win.

Wilson breakout game
Clark absolutely class in the second half
Steele, please critic's, STFU.
Dow cool under pressure
Jones held the midfield together in the first half
Wilkie. He'll they talk about Henry but 17 other clubs missed him.

Midfield needs work but think we’ve got good young talent to go through there - building a great young core and should add more this draft

There's no doubt we won't win a flag with the midfield as it stands, so we need more talent in there but also cross our fingers on these guys:

  • Phillipou looked like he'd turned the corner
  • Windhager had a couple of good games this year and will hopefully keep developing
  • Clark still might be able to come good with a cleaner run at it
  • Dow still might be able to come good with a cleaner run at it
  • Stocker seems reborn as a tagger
  • Wilson might be able to go inside at some point?
  • Henry could have a better run with injuries
  • Hugo shows very good signs

It's not ridiculous that all of those guys could step up a bit next year which should give us a fair bit of progress in the midfield.

So I was also making an Autopsy, majority of that was centered around

But since this is here, we're a highly emotive team generally and rarely do we start games well, that's just not us we don't go into a game and blitz from go. So yeah first half was meh, but the thing to consider was, Geelong couldn't even kick 10 goals, they just couldn't. so all we had to do really was what we just did, refresh, be fresher, and get reward from our effort.

And we did just that.

So as we are an emotive team, and we ride or die together, we rode that bitch all the way home. Because the cats just don't have it in them to swarm goals like a Brisbane, like a Port, like a blues, so as soon as they middled the centre, they were in for hard work.
