Autopsy Round 3, 2023: Hawks skin the Roos

Anyone who watched the game can tell me why the back line played better today?

Was it personnel? Scrim in, Blank Out.

Hardwick stay down there the whole game?

More support up the field?
We didn't blindly attack through the corridor today. We were patient and got lots of uncontested marks as we moved the ball forward. This meant that we were well structured when we did turn it over. And turnovers were usually deep forward or near the boundary line.

Something I think has flown under the radar a bit is Sicily's statistical dominance so far this season.

Another 28 disposal and 18 (18!) mark game today 🤯

I think we are going to witness one of the greatest statistical output from a backline player ever this year from the Blonde Prince.

The numbers he is pumping out at the moment are just next level.

Still not sold on brockman, but bloody hell it was a smart game. Led to the right spots, chased hard. Will make a believer of me very quickly if he keeps that up

Impey and bramble the turnover kings. At least Impey finally put his body on the line
Just enjoy the win man.

Yep - but they always pick the sub player from the emergencies now.

Only announce the 22 selected on Thursday and the 3 emergencies include the sub and usually the carry over player.
I must have missed it...who was subbed out for Bramble?

15 of those marks were uncontested but he did have a lot of intercepts. Can someone please comment on Ward. How is he tracking and what role do we expect to play once his learning phase is over.

Not much I can add that hasn’t already been said, but how good was Brocky? Brings a touch of class we’ve been missing all year.

Thought Morison, despite being a little rusty at times, was huge in our transitional ball movement and just overall composure. Could really feel the difference.

Greene is going to kick a bag this year.

I agree. He’s building.

Imagine the second half of year if we can get some mix of the following group fit and firing in the forward half: Lewis, Wingard, Breust, Greene, Brockman, Moore.

That group can help us kick a big score.

We got a long way to go, but an exciting football team might be emerging.

Only two players since the start of 2021 are averaging over 20 disposals and 1 goal per game. Dylan Moore is one, Marcus Bontempelli is the other.

Sweet stats!!!

Impact though?:grimacing::grimacing:

Scoreboard was a lot closer than what i saw. Almost shot ourselves in the foot with shocking misses and a poor third quarter. Could’ve and probably should’ve been 40+

Much better effort this week, lets hope we can give it a real crack Monday week!

Couldn’t watch the game today due to other commitments but thanks for all the commentary. Seems things went about as well as we could have hoped but did Worps get an injury or was it just a quiet day for him?
He was fine, did some good things, just wasn't one of our best. That's one of the good things about today's win. We had some standouts like Day, Newcombe, Moore, Brockman but there were a lot of contributors to the win and improved effort across the board I thought. Made the win very satisfying to watch, especially as we didn't die in the 4th as I feared we might. You could tell how much it meant to every player.

Morrison provides that “zen” or calmness that we have lacked in previous weeks.

He has played nearly 80 games so he has that bracket of experience that we hope some of the others will gain in the next few years.

I've already declared my admiration for the performances of Brockman and Day today, and I will now extend that to Dylan Moore, Newcombe, Scrimshaw, both C-Macs, and Changkuoth Jiath.

Dylan Moore is easily a top-3 player for us now. I know some people believe he best serves us in the midfield, but I think he's at his best off half-forward, and today proved that. He was tremendous in the first half and kicked that beauty from one of the best Hawthorn plays I have seen. He lowered his colours slightly in the second, but he stood up at the end when the game was in the balance.

Newcombe. As some have said already, he played like Mark Ricciuto today. I think he serves us really well in a half-forward role. It's going to be interesting to see if this becomes a more common role for him.

Scrimshaw. This is why we need him in the team. We looks so much more structurally coherent with him there. He did make some questionable decisions at times, but his ability to be involved in link-up plays cannot be underestimated.

Cam Mackenzie has certainly been given a reality check at times over the past 3 weeks about the pace of the game in the AFL, but his class and skill have still been able to shine, and they shone really bright today. He should have had his debut goal, but he couldn’t convert. He's the player we needed during the Titch and Jaeger days.

Connor MacDonald had one of his better games today. His disposal was really clean, and he was able to get involved in plays like I have rarely seen him, as proven by his 7 score involvements. And how about that goal 😍

Jiath had one of his best days in a long while. His run and carry as well as defensive intent were on display for the whole world to see in the first half. He lowered his colours big time in the second, but it was a good performance nonetheless. Nash, Sis, and Amon all played but probably went under the radar. Ward had an uncharacteristically bad day. I guess it is bound to happen with so many other mids around him.

I was only able to see patches up to the 4th quarter, the result is what mattered today for the team more than the style of win. Well done lads, let's get plenty more 'W's in the bag this season!

Watching the highlights the passion among the group is the thing that struck me. They do not look like a group whose confidence has been shaken. In fact they looked defiant and determined.
