Autopsy Round 3, 2024 :Hawks fail against Cats

They did for Selwood whole career. Only now, it’s the other way around

It stinks

I feel like they paid them to everyone else at the time too though. Shuey was a good exponent of it and even won WCE a final after the siren doing it. Puopolo too, but they all got paid.

Now it’s kinda just everyone but Ginni, or anyone that does it more than once in a game. Either pay them all, or pay none.

Confused how to feel about these. Being on the receiving end of it from Selwood for years I know they can be momentum killing calls to blow the whistle every time and it honestly makes the game a worse product to watch.

The other side of me says why is the onus on the guy with the ball to avoid getting necked. Get your technique right and we have no issues. There is no hiding Ginni is very good at drawing these, he probably kicks 3 today if they are called high.

It gives the AFL a real dilemna. You cannot umpire one player differently to the rest of the comp

I agree with that--especially given that the game went through a "crisis" of low scoring a couple of seasons back, which then brought in rule changes to encourage more fluid scoring (6,6,6, and standing the mark).

Forwards who employ evasive skill/craft can contribute to teams kicking higher scores.

Yet today we have small forwards being penalised for their evasive efforts to attempt kicking scores that the AFL desired.

From what we say today, there was barely an onus on the defender to lay a legitimate tackle on Ginni.

(Don't get me started on the right of a forward to "elect" to have a "shot on goal", burn 30 seconds of game time, then pass it off elsewhere ... brilliant).

We were beaten by a better side today, as much as i hate saying that, its clear we quite a way off still at competing week in and week out consistently at the level required to be at the top of half of the ladder.

Watson, Ginni, and Chol all have the potential to be really great players and will only get better the more they play together. Lewis is abit of a worry, I think he has the skills but clearly is struggling to make an impact.

Players go through ups and downs, Too many here are too quick to just write players off. Its appalling.

Look at Frosty, whipping boy for so many, but has really stood up this year and been more than serviceable when we have really needed him.

Sure, Bruest had a shocker, but his been an absolute star for so long, give the guy a break.

Mckenzie seems to be getting better each week and show he can impact on games. Ward is struggling with confidence I think, seems indecisive and his skills arent do him any favours. I want to see more of HH in the middle so hopefully Sam continues to give him game time.

I know alot were critical of Ethan Philips in the VFL this week, but I still think he needs to be given a crack at AFL level to see what he can bring to the table. It could help free up Sicily and make a big difference to the backline overall, we will be without Blanky for the season so the sooner we find out about him the better.

Overall, alot of things to work on, but alot of positives too. We are not anything close to be the finished article, so we need to keep sticking fat and keep working on the basics.

Dont underestimate role players.

Michael Osbourne, Bren Guerra, Brad Sewell were great honest role players who played multiple premierships

If Josh Ward can be a solid contributor in midfield rotations and add a few strings to his bow then Ive no doubt he'll play in our next flag (needs to be better than today but

He is no where near those blokes...

That isnt my recollection. A quick look at the stats suggest it was bau in the middle. Checking kayo shows that their run of 4 goals had mckenzie and huss in the middle for the third goal but the one before that had nash, worpel and newc in the centre.

so it was only the third? Worps i know was in most of the CBAs. Huss had 4 before he went out?

Haw 61 scoring shots
Oppo 66 scoring shots
Yet -117 points in deficit.
Something gotta give one way or another. I don't like the fact that our better midfield didn't take full advantage of basically against no-ones in contrast to other sides mids in the comp. But, more of a problem is our frwd line, absolute ****ing mess, especially Lewis, Breust and even Moore!! Expect more from these guys as the newbies Ginni, Watson and Chol have held their end up.
Can't believe we've conceded

Ridiculous.

They are a more experienced, well-drilled and a much better coached team currently, but it was disappointing to lose in the way we did. We capitulated early, played one good quarter of football and then were just outplayed in the second half.

There is a distinct lack of on-field leadership exhibited when teams start to flog us.

Also, one good quarter of football is going to win us very few games.

Worpel has been great this season. Credit to him for being essentially a line-hand in the middle.

Chol was great.

Frost defended admirably.

Mackenzie was quality in the first half, but tired in the second. It's been a theme this season though that's got to be a fitness thing. Once he's is able to play out whole games he will be really good.

It was refreshing to see a ruckman that is even somewhat mobile and someone that fought to the end. Hopefully Meek gets another game and tests himself against Cameron and Cox next week.

Newcombe and Lewis have both been complete disappointments so far. MacDonald is quickly becoming a flaky HFF. All three players need something to change to get them going.

Hustwaite didn't take his chance, but hopefully he gets another game.

Breust needs to be dropped. Bring Butler in.

Amon isn't a defenders backside, he is soft and just leaks goals. Mad Mitchell and Silly Simmo need to stop wasting our best wingman, it's been three weeks too many. Let Seamus play that role now he's fit, at least he's hard at it and will defend his man.

It has actually been out of control the scoring accuracy against us. 9 of those came from the dees game too and I think 2 were rushed. So 48.16 if you want to get technical about it which is absolutely absurd numbers considering they haven’t exactly all been walk in goals.

One rule for Geelong and a different rule for Hawthorn, particularly Ginnivan.

I am so tired of it.

If Geelong or a Geelong player was treated with such disdain, Scott would be making a song and dance about it. About time we did. His treatment yesterday was disgusting. I cannot recall him dropping his knees. Yesterday, he was umpired AGAINST. He was NOT given free kicks he definitely earned.

It's really not.

We're 6th in the league for marks inside 50 despite playing two of the best defensive sides in the league.
Second in the league for tackles inside 50.

Not to that level, but he brings perceived pressure.
He tackled Hawkins today, left both arms free, because all he could reach was his waist, but Hawkins rushed the handball and it ended up with us.

esp Sewell. He was a deadset gun. Not a role player at all. Neither Guerra
Guerra delisted at two clubs before finding his way at Hawthorn.
Sewell didn't playing decent football until he was 24 years old.

But sure compare players at their peak to a 20 year old.

Not comparing them at all, just saying Sewell and Guerra were much classier than mere role players. Very comfortable with Ward's progression

Itll happen and when it does it will be quick

I always chuckle when Bowes gets mentioned, they had no interest in him at all . Just the pick .
And Bruhn is ok , played quite well today but if he played for us most of our board would be frustrated with his shortcomings as a player .
They also got Ollie Henry to go back because he was homesick living in Melbourne ( wonder what the thousands of foreign students studying here thousands of kms from home in an unfamiliar culture and without the biggest sporting club in the country supporting them would make of that.. but that's another matter).

The other extraordinary thing about the cats is the durability of their veterans. Hawkins plays probably 20 games a year for 17 years, and Mitch Lewis, ten years his junior, might play 13 or 14. And when you look at Bruest and Gunners and Wingard compared to the cats older players it's a stark and unflattering comparison! Don't know how they do it!
