Mitchell has a fast game plan / style but ends up picking a slowish Huss to play in the midfield.
I hope we don't go this way again.
Our coach was a plodder, but you wouldn’t deny his status in the game. Fast game plan has two elements, speed of run and carry and speed of ball movement. Hustwaite excels at the latter a la his coach. In terms of decision making he’s as quick as anyone.

Assuming CMac is out, bring in either Frost, Bruest or Hustwaite depending on matchups.

Not meaning to be negative but don't want Seamus Mitchell at all. Whenever I see him, he looks like a deer in the headlights and butchers it by foot. Send Hardwick back if need be and bring Frost in.

I wouldn't mind seeing Seamus, and I'd say calling him a butcher is unfair. He is a beautiful kick of the ball, and can effect these touch kicks at speed that are bloody hard to do. Last year he just went off the boil in all areas: was getting beaten defensively, was panicking with the ball and over-possessing, and just totally went into his shell, stopped using his speed to break lines.

In the end though I just don't see how he helps replace Cmac. Breust for me.

Young Seamus definitely has some ability, has some hardness to him as well.

Not sure what happened last year, he looked a shadow of the player he was the previous year.

Could be one of those players like Worps who is very much a confidence player?

This.

Also worth noting that winning the ball at source will be critical against GWS. Losing the clearance battle against Essendon and Carlton didn't cost us on the scoreboard but a far better side like the Giants would punish us if we don't at least break even at stoppages.

Nailed it. Lose stoppages this week badly again, and we're done.

I have thought they would boost the midfield with the cmac injury, but not sure how. HH can go in his place and we have more mid rotations. Or maybe Moore and wiz do more and we put a forward in to let them? We don’t have a player behind the ball like Hodge who doubles in the midfield, so if we shift players then they shift from the forward line.

I’m thinking HH is the most likely addition and Gunners stays the sub. The backs will have to cover themselves for any injuries.

Re-watched the Carlton game and I thought our backline seemed to function better when Sicily went forward. Can't have to many See ball get ball defenders.

Feel the gws will tag Mass....NEED TO STOP TOBY.

I think your spot on Bedford will run with Mass & theyll back there mids to get the job done on ours

Stick with the current midfield setup. There's no need to bring in HH for a game where defending transition is going to be crucial. I think the concerns around our clearance game have been a bit overstated:

Essendon:
  • They consistently played with an extra at stoppages around the ground.
  • While we were well beaten in general clearances, we actually won centre clearances 15–11.
  • Draper had the best game I’ve seen from him against us.
Carlton:
  • Clearances are one of their few real strengths, and they’ve got one of the best pure clearance mids of the last 20 years.
  • It was also a breakout game from TDK.

If anything, Meek might need some support — he's been comfortably beaten over the past two weeks

Think Bruest in for the sub role. Gunston to decoy Taylor.

Perhaps Battle to start on Greene as can play on that type, releasing hardwick forward and Sicily to roam.

Especially against us. We have been getting smashed in clearances for the last few years as well. Both teams rebound game is where it's at.

Your defensive talls v our tall forwards will be fascinating.
Looking forward to seeing if we go 3 talls + Stringer or not.

Gunston kicked 4 on Taylor last year

Well, if Mitchell picks a slow-er player then that is, in fact, his game plan. Maybe you've got that one wrong?
Sorry what I meant to say is picking him up in the draft. If he's not quick in terms of pace why take the risk?? Pace in the midfield must be non negotiable when picking up a midfielder in the draft.

It can certainly happen that a slowish midfielder picked up in the draft is a gun (Example Leigh Matthews, Greg Williams) Both had phenomenal agility and strength. However most times the player ends up a bust. I was hoping Ned Long would buck the trend because he also had the height to play half fwd. Hope he succeeds at the Pies. (but not against us)

Anyway, it's just my opinion and I may very well be wrong.
