King isn't a stupid as people like to think. Parroting the AFL narrative is good for your career. Sticking the boots into StKilda is part of it.

He winds up supporters because outraging them keeps eyeballs on him.....well eardrums in this case. Making a definite hard call like banning for 5 weeks to set an example gets people talking about him.

King has always been a huge supporter in protecting the head. Nothing to do with the Saints on this occasion.

Say what you will about him but he's extremely consistent on this front

I'm sure Hunter Clark feels much safer now that Ryder has been suspended, per King's request, while Mackay was free to play on despite King's strident views on the matter.

From what read I don't think the argument from the tribunal was the incidents weren't similar, it was that the non guilty verdict was handed by the MRO which is separate to the tribunal.

Seems as though the tribunal think the English one should have been guilty also

The AFL needs to establish some proper precedent, because right now they're just opening the door to legal actions which will bankrupt them in the coming decade.

if the MRO got that one wrong, there needs to be a sanction for the MRO, or he needs to be counselled to do his job correctly. Young peoples' future health is at stake here, and it's chooklotto at its finest.

What's the bet that the next big hit to take out a Saints player doesn't register as having a case to answer?

I agree the whole thing needs an overhaul

In my opinion both English and Ryder deserved a week

The fact one can come away with nothing and the other gets two shows try system is flawed

So in other words it is just pot luck with the MRO whether they decide to apply a suspension or not for similar incidents like the English and Ryder ones.

That's just not good enough for a so called professional sport, how is it fair that English gets off scot free while Ryder cops two weeks, it would be bad enough if Ryder copped one more week than English but him copping 2 more weeks than English just makes this decision even more ridiculous.

Michael Christian should be under scrutiny for inconsistent decisions like this with his suitability for the job questioned but it probably won't happen.

As I said earlier, should have got a clown in, treat them with the same manner of respect and can do attitude to find the truth of the matter.

Looking forward to the statement about how the potential for Day to wander into traffic is the cars fault for existing on a road.

Next time we play the Doggies, I reckon Ryder needs to hospitalise pencil-neck for a couple of weeks as payback for serving his week for him.

Not sure what that has to do with David King

King was pushing for McKay to be suspended

Nothing intended against King - I'm aware of what he said in relation to the Clark incident, and agree he is passionate about pushing for change.

The problem is that the league doesn't WANT change - they want to look tough on one particular action, while allowing free-range sh*tmixing in the name of "football incidents"

ie, They're not listening to David King, or any other reasonable head, and they're not dealing with the clearly inconsistent judgements from the MRO.

Cant bump for fear of concussion.

BREAKING: Paddy McCartin to win the Coleman as every kent gets out of his way. An amazing streak of 20 possessions & 20 goals per game from round 5 onwards.

We should definitely fake a Covid outbreak before the Swans game so we don't have to let any of our best 22 on the same paddock as McCartin ... we'll be lucky if any player gets less than 3 weeks, so it might as well be the Sandy lads ...

This is the week then since Ratts tested positive, just rotate all the people out, eventually forefeit the match just before the telecast to leave the AFL scrambling to fulfill the broadcast terms, and a big F you on the extra week prep internally without bothering about the plastics that'll fail to mediocre at around round 13.

Problem is, McCartin doesn't play for the plastics ...

On the one hand, I don't want Paddy to get hurt (I see him as an "accident" waiting to happen) ... but I'm a lot more concerned about the consequences for our player if they are the one deemed responsible, because if you wear RWB there are no "accidents" - only pre-meditated murder.

A hypothetical question. How many players when running directly at an opposition player 'front on' decide to tackle ?

I would say the vast majority of tackles are laid either from behind or side on. From a front on position you would be risking a head clash, broken ribs or simply opening yourself up for a major collision/injury. It's only human nature to brace for impact. For mine that's what Paddy did. There's a big difference when a player continues on with the action in an old fashioned shirt front.

So the current mantra "if you choose to bump, you're in trouble" is flawed when two players are about about to make face on contact. Self preservation to protect yourself would kick in if you have any brains.

So it seems in a situation like Ryder's your only course of AFL approved action is to step aside and let them through. Now that would be a great look. Otherwise try and tackle front on and wear a broken cheek bone or jaw.

AFL admitted that English incident was similar but that it shouldn't be considered as "the MRO and this Tribunal...don't always agree with each other's assessment". So if the Tribunal (the appellate and therefore higher authority) feel that English deserved 2 weeks, why on earth did the AFL not appeal the MRO decision and make an example of it then?? If the precedent was set the week before then Paddy may well have tried to hurdle Day instead.
