Autopsy Round 4, 2024: Richmond v St.Kilda

It is a lovely place and the ground was immaculate.

HOWEVER, and this is the most important part.

It can be an incredible ground but not be fit for professional AFL standards.

Facts are that the wing close to broadcast side was a hope step and jump between the boundary line and the centre square. There is absolutely no width on that ground.

The only way to make it work is to run 16 a side games at the top level. It just is a cluster* scrum at Norwood.

Go look at the Richmond board. They echo the views that we have here about it.
Richmond board? pfft, apparently we are a nothing team and totally vanilla and only beat a more inexperienced team.

I would put the outs we had against their's for importance in team setup.

I had a look at the replay, and Cordy was very good, probably in our best.
He had a good game. I think not having to be as accountable on a decent key forward helped a lot though.

I honestly feel that Cordy would work quite well with Howard. Let him take the 2nd tall and allow him to play more of an intercept role as he can be a good mark.

Problem is with both Wilkie and Battle there it would make our defence too tall and no way in hell would I be dropping either of them.

Unfortunately it just doesn't seem like Pou is going to be an instant midfield hit. He's getting his hands on it but his first instinct seems to be to handball, he hasn't found a way to anticipate space and break out and find space to run with the ball. This is something that Jones actually does well despite many other flaws in his game.

Windy back in there next week, we need him to be back to the Collingwood game Windy if we're any chance.

With Pou, still think the last two weeks he has been better, looks to be improving. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets better after re-signing.

A significant part of the problem is we’ve got 6 mids unavailable at present…you put Windhager, Henry, Dow, Clark,Wood & Crouch into the equation & things would look more positive!

Agree, but I’d like to think that our 2nd choice and fringe players are all training the same famous Lyon “system”. But agree it’s mostly about having the skills to execute and clearly we would have been obliterated had we dished that up to a fully primed top 4 side.

Ahhh sigh…bloody injuries

A hard match to judge. The first half was as bad a we've played but the second half was admirable.

One thing we need to work on is how handling of close finishes. We had an opportunity 3 times in the final minute to rush the ball but for some dumb reason, we kept it in and Richmond almost goaled. We need to be smarter in that situation.

Not sure where Pou fits in- if there was ever a player who doesn't look like a natural mid it's him, and I think his best value is in the forward half only.

Even allowing for our half a dozen best 22 being out I don't think there would've been any coming back from a one goal first half if Lynch, Balta, Baker, Prestia, Hopper and Grimes had all played.

Our first half needs to be heavily reviewed in that light.
Yea but it wouldn't have been only one goal if
Wood
Windy
Henry
Crouch
Clark
Dow
and Doogs played.

That, and a by product of lack of depth and rebuilding on the fly means we’re playing a fair chunk of youth who are still learning how to transition defensively and offensively.

I think RTB has shown a much quicker brand of footy, but it’s a balancing act, knowing that you also need to maintain your defensive structure if you end up turning it over and having the personnel to punish teams, which we don’t have yet.

Kid is still only 19, feel he has years of development along with Chito, Windy, NWM, Collard, Hastie, Wilson and at least four more.

Someone on SEN was talking about it this morning too, might have been a Brisbane player i think.

If Adelaide are going to enjoy the financial benefits of having gather round back year after year, next serious question is how much of this money is being reinvested into community grounds? SA can’t have their cake and eat it too.

We were poor. You have to address it. Because a lot was effort.

However in saying that, a lot of how bad we were in the first half was the 1.5 scoreline and a few we absolutely butchered (Membrey + Owens streaming in during the first quarter)

Had we kicked 3.3. It’s a 2 goal game at half time.

Martin was running riot. Ross quoted him as 20 touches to half time. Taranto had 13 possessions 5 tackles and 3 clearances.

Midfield whilst undermanned has to do a better job of competing.

This is a league wide issue.

The AFL appear to need to address what is acceptable with clubs.

Wouldn't mind seeing Phillopou spend some time on a half back flank.
Love this idea. He's been hurting us in the middle. He's had a taste of it so lets get him a bit more easy ball and he can use his reach and long kicking until he gains a bit more power through the core/legs. Windy has done his time at hbf and looks ready for a good run at it with Steele and a rejuvenated Ross.

Not to side with Cairnsman but Tourette’s isn’t always just randomly swearing. Can be any sort of ticks, random movements, random phrases.

Point taken.
In my experience swearing was a large part of it - but I am happy to be corrected.

Cairnsman is a riot, love his posts. Don't really agree with many of his footy opinions, but the man has wit, would never put him on ignore. Who wants an echo chamber anyway?
his posts are fine, it's people replying/trying to argue the point against an obvious troll that is annoying.. also let's not go overboard, dying on a hill named cooper sharman doesn't quite qualify as wit

I was worried the siren was going to go before he got boot to ball, there was only 8 seconds left in the term when he kicked it.
makes a nice change for us to get one in the final 10 seconds!

Yep. Haven't been his greatest fan, but he was pretty good.

We couldn't close the Bombers down at the end of that game, so I suppose we've made a little progress there.

really don’t see the hate towards Pou in the midfield . Still had another 6 tackles. Just keep pumping time into him when we can.
agree, he has good line breaking potential, big body, quick hands, good kick too when he pulls the trigger, he's shown glimpses of being able to find time and space in tight too.. It's a slow burn but I think he'll get there
