Autopsy Round 5, 2023: Collingwood v St.Kilda

In hindsight it was pretty clear what went wrong in this game.

The Pies held their width really well in contests - they made sure they always had a few guys around the contest on the outside so if the ball came out loose then they could run immediately. On the other hand we were collapsing in to the contest to try to win it.

No reason that couldn't have worked for us but our contested stuff just wasn't quite strong enough, Mitchell + Pendlebury + Adams just harder bodies and smarter than our kids - Crouch aside obviously. And also their structure means they can win really crude clearances from the contest, just tap it out or knock it on, because they know they have the numbers on the outside.

A bunch to learn from there but also personnel would change things. Add Steele to us and remove Mitchell from them and the whole thing is a very different outcome.

Disappointing to lose but we got an audit tonight.

We know where our weaknesses are now.

Nas needs to get tougher and tighter if he wants to be a defender in q Ross Lyon defence, he's too loose.

Our forward line also needs to get better with Membrey, King and Billings coming back, they are on notice.
Just like how we got an audit against Melbourne in the preseason and hadn’t lost a game since (Essendon, Fremantle, Dogs, Essendon, Gold Coast).

We’re building and learning as a young team making necessary mistakes to get better. No need to overreact about Gresham, Paton or even Marshall.

And as much as I dislike Carlton, I won’t even mind a loss next week as long as we continue to show growth and effort.

Stay the course.

The Good
  • Game plan stood up against the first genuine test. Our pressure was at finals level for all but 10 mins at the start of the last
  • We kept coming even when the game was lost and almost pulled off a miracle
  • Phillipou has elite decision making and handball skills in heavy traffic he sets players free with his handball will be a star onballer once his frame and fitness gets to midfield level
  • Byrnes is possibly the most improved player in the competition I had written him off after last year he had some moments yesterday where he needed a bit more composure but he kept coming and runs as hard as any in the team his last 5 mins were outstanding
  • Wilkie is the premier intercept backman in the comp right now and Battle is not far behind him even Howard took a couple of marks he would normally punch
  • Core experienced players are all humming Crouch Ross Wood Sinclair with Steele to come next week
  • Will learn a lot from that game more composure next time and we win
  • Ross with a smile on his face in the final moments

The Bad
  • Caminiti will miss weeks for what looked a pretty innocuous push and shove gone wrong - Membury will replace him but was pretty uninspiring for the Zebs from the little I saw.
  • Gresham decision making and kicking inside 50 is not good enough for a player of his skill
  • We lost

No he hasn't

Gresham has gone to 51 centre bounces compared to Clark's 38

Well there you go. Would have thought it was the other way around. What has Clark been doing when not playing centre?

we won contested possessions by 21 I believe - so don't think the contest work was necessarily the issue. Just getting clean hands out of the stoppage to go was. Pies shielded the space well once the ball came out and we panicked a bit.

Proud that Caminiti was the bigger man and walked away, leave Murphy having a sook. But in an ideal 1980s world, Murphy would've been floored again for being a flog after the siren.
Not the only post-siren flog.

When the siren sounded, every Pies player celebrated with each other except one. Frampton decided to celebrate after the siren by giving Mitch Owens a massive shove.

There’s little I hate more in sport at any level than continuing the crap after the siren sounds. Shake hands, move on.

One of our strengths has been getting it on the outside and running free. Our wingmen struggled to break free and their defence held up. Hill had his worst game for the year and Wood was good rather than brilliant. Byrnes looks like he has the composure of a player that has played 30 games. Having Steele would have given us another inside mid to get a bigger advantage around the ball too.

Leigh Fisher can't be allowed to umpire against the Saints. He's proven over a long period to either hold a grudge or feel like he can't make decisions that favour us to avoid looking biased. He's fine umpiring other sides but he costs us games. Hopefully Lyon isn't as much of a cuck as some of our past coaches and asks to have him excused from duty.

Slept on it.

Still ******* weak from Murphy.

Gerald Whaterbed trying to get him hung, drawn and quartered on SEN. Asking for the death penalty then excusing Shai Bolton. He's such an arse hat.

Looks like Caminiti will cop a week off, unlikely that a Saints player gets looked at by the MRP and gets off lightlly but Membrey is a good replacement.

I laugh when people think that he favours St Kilda because he used to play for us, it's quite the opposite, he screws us more than any other umpire.

Saints had more disposals, contested possessions, better efficiency inside 50, hitouts ,clearances, marks ( but less inside 50).
A lot of the stats were fairly close , but Collingwood stood out for tackles and 1%'s ( 1%'s includes all those smothers i guess ).

Owen's and Marshall and Wilkie had as many tackles as Mitchell, Pendlebury, and Crisp.

Then there were 6 Collingwood players who all had 4 tackles, we only had Byrnes.
Both teams had 4 players with 3 tackles.

I often think he does it on purpose to protect his own integrity. ( and like you said, dimwits still think he shows favoritism ).

I see it as a good trait for Fisher, but bad luck for us.

And it's still ****ing stupid from Hammer.

If it were one of our blokes we'd be screaming bloody murder.

He'll be lucky to get only 3. The media has already seen to that. Which is a goddamn shame because he gives us a shitload more than Cordy up forward.

Yes a 19 year old kid in his 5th game is ****ing stupid.

What it stupid is that he is going to get punished because of the outcome not necessarily the force of his action or intent.

I think Ralph is right. I’d be sliding Murphys interview infront of any panel and highlighting it was a soft hit on an even softer skull

It seems to be normal that our blokes sustain head injuries without anyone or anything contacting their head.
