Round 5 Match Review: The Good The Excellent & the Simply Outstanding

First post and just gotta say favourite part of that game had to be the long handball from Dunstan for Roo running into an open goal. Glorious moment and nice to see Dunstan showing his cool head in that situation.

Welcome and cool user name.

Played a bit of footy with Jimmy Webster (I am a fair bit older than Jimmy) and have been watching all the St Kilda games (not a Sanits supporter, North Melbourne - please don't hold that against me) specifically to watch Jimmy. I've noticed he is not getting subbed the last couple of games, so his ability to run out a game is improving.

He is so composed out there, he doesn't panic because his thought process is so good. What you might not realise is that he is hard as nails too, which is masked by the the amount of time he has to dispose of the ball and how silky he is. I read in another thread 23 touches at 90% eff. I wouldn't have thought this will be a one off. Again, his composure at this level (already? machine) allows him to take his time and kick the ball magnificently.

Can only see him getting better and better. Once he gets fitter, he'll be able to start running off and getting a few more h. receives and delivering down Riewoldt's throat with pin point precision.

G'day guys

Great win against most of the odds (we were 'favourites' and have been tipped by many to be up near the pointy end of the ladder come the right time of the year).

Was ugly but your older guys certainly showed the way on how to lead a football club. Nick Riewoldt is in career best form, Montagna is one of the best outside players when up and about and Lenny continues to keep on keeping on.

Not to be outdone, I was thoroughly impressed with Webster, Billings and Curren's job on Heppel was top notch! The future is bright down at Seaford/Moorabin/Junction Oval/Etihad.

I would have had the top 5 players on the ground as 5)Riewoldt, 4)Stanton, 3)Hayes, 2)Curren, 1)Montagna.

Great win guys, good luck for the rest of the year :thumbsu:

Don't undersell yourselves, if Sam Fisher's brother wasn't helping him out you guys would've run away with the game.

Watching the reply I was really impressed with Delaney. No fuss, no bother.

And a great moment came when I think Carlisle went to try a bit of tough stuff pushing and shoving. Delaney absolutely went for him, and the Dons player went to water. Delaney would stand no nonsense from pretty boy forwards. Old fashioned in your face back man. Loved it.

He seems a great sport.

My son got a pic with him at rooeys recruits, and he put his hat on backwards to match.

I like his vibe.
I was standing behind the bench at the VFL Sandy v Frankston game and Bruce sprinted out of defence, got the ball then ran to wing and speared a pass to Tom Lee. The ball went straight through Lee's hands and hit him in the snout, Bruce simply turned around, started running back to defence and as he passed the bench simply pointed to his nose without looking at the bench. All the players on the bench & coaches cracked up, he seems to have a bit of character about him.

Reminds me of this from Sandy/Franga practice match

Simpkin "who you playing on Brucey?"
Bruce "I dunno, that big guy"

:D

Welcome A Current Affair Look forward to hearing your thoughts

Bad: Schneider getting a week for that tiny tummy tickle. But he should not have done it. One of our older players, this is not what he should be doing.

What annoys me is Hodge doing the exact same thing on Monday but making sure to hold Stevie J up by the collar so he doesn't fall to the ground.

"Insufficient force to warrant a report"

Absolute bullshit.

The Good: We can play better. A lot better.

The Excellent: Jack Billings. Skills. Decision making. General feel for the game.

The Outstanding: Dunstan's handball off the ground in the middle (last two minutes of the 2nd Q).

Riewoldt's Superpowers of Effort & Hayes' 2nd Half.

Watching the game again and one of my favourites moments came at the start of the third quarter. Steven takes a mark around 70 out, gives the handball to Billings who immediately see's the space behind Rooey and puts it in the exact right spot for Rooey to take the mark. Rooey kicks the goal and as everyone is congratulating him he see's Billings, high fives him, says "great kick" and taps him on the head. I loved it.

There was a play in the first quarter, when Billings had done the opposite.. i.e. looked for a leading player when a kick over the top would in retrospect have been better. The commentators noted it. I'm pretty sure there was vision of Rooey looking peeved. So what I particularly liked about the play you have mentioned is that it seems likely that either the coaches or players themselves have picked up on this during the quarter time break.

Oh, and the other thing I liked was that it reminded me of Goddard's 'over the top' pass to Riewoldt in the 3rd quarter of the 2009 prelim vs the Bulldogs. One of my (and I'm sure many of us') favourite ever games.
