Autopsy Round 5 vs Geelong

Those criticising Dixon need to pull there bloody heads in. No KPF, not one can expect to perform with our sloth like ball movement. For most of the game we allowed Geelong ample time to effectively set up and flood back defensively.

I swear we are one of the worse teams in the AFL for effective forward entries.

After games like this I feel like I'm living in Westworld ... as one of the androids.

We are manipulated by mad scientists living in implausible scenarios where we are designed to fail to satisfy the whims of paying guests.

Then next week we reset and do it all again.

But we are developing memories ...

The new guys were supposed to make our old guys better. If there was one of them supposed to carry the load himself, it would be Rockliff. Watts and Motlop came so Dixon, Gray, Wines, and Wingard could lift up their games; which hasn't happen so far.

Thomas, Trengove, and McKenzie came to improve our depth, in my humble opinion.
Recruit Buddy, Dusty and Fyfe and our coaches would have them playing like spuds in no time.

See the Wingard thread for an example of how good we are at breaking nice things.

HAMISH Hartlett was taken off the field on a motorised stretcher after a brutal collision with Patrick Dangerfield and Lindsay Thomas is on report after one crazy quarter in Adelaide.
Harlett and Dangerfield clashed heads at high speed, leaving Hartlett bleeding profusely from the head in shocking scenes at Adelaide Oval.

Obvious writer at Herald Sun did not watch the game..

Too soon to have broken the new guys.

Add the Showdown record and really how can you justify re-signing Ken???
You'd better ask KT Kochie and the board. Many on here, myself included, wanted a fresh face like Stuart Dew.
We'd become tired of watching the same old same old and coming up short against the better teams.
For all of our phases that Ken has taken us thru'...
hard tough brave fun and exciting football in the never give up living the creed Port Adelaide football way
we're left with watching a dysfunctional team fine tuning, as Ken says, "the casino play",where we all chip in and come away with nothing.
Can't wait for the next showdown.

7 goals for the entire game
SEVEN goals!!! .... yahoo .... seven effing goals. Not 4 or 5 not 6 but 7 and how many marks in our fwd 50?
Our last Qtr said it all. No wonder Hammer just kicked the ball over the boundary.

Right on the money, this coaching group appears to have developed a habit of destroying a players natural flair, we have already seen what has happened to Wingard, and there are signs that Watts and Motlop are heading down that same path.

Just wanted to expand on this...

There is no deception in our gameplay.

We don’t seem to coach positioning around contests (either at all, or, poorly). Whether it’s everyone flying for the spoil/mark or our only method in the midfield to bash and crash through the middle of a pack, we seem to have no accumulated footy IQ about covering exits, handball outlets, making dummy leads etc. This is what good footy teams do. I’m sure we’ve all seen/played with guys who can barely raise a gallop but seem to always been in the right spot. We simply can’t develop these attributes.

We’ve backed in working harder over working smarter and you can’t get into the top in pro sport following that path.

True but he still drops marks he should take every week old concrete hands

We're at the same W-L as last year but we seem to be a worse side. We're just a mid table team and we'll just make up the numbers..again.

I'm not going to cast all the blame on Ken as I think we have too many players who lack skill, footy smarts and maturity.

Not playing a ruck is treasonous in itself, but this rubbish where we run hard and get no reward is psychologically reinforcing "well why run hard then" mentality.

Too long we've cooked it with run harderer for longerer and not go any reward for it. The players in their mind would be like lol **** running it's just gonna come straight back over my head anyway.
Coach has lost the players. Has sucked all the flair, instinct and attack out of them and replaced it with hard work for no reward. Is it any wonder they look disillusioned out there. Where is the fun?

That was very disappointing.

As most people have already pointed out, we have gone back to blindly bombing into the forward 50. The worst part is that these bombs are sent in a position where A Geelong player was already standing, and our forwards struggled to reach. Very very few kicks were to the advantage of our forwards.

Second problem is in defence, I've noticed this before, and it's something we do against teams with a good full forward (Sydney /West Coast etc) and I can't help but think we had this plan set up for Hawkins - the double team for aerial balls. The problem being that we always leave an opposition forward free who didn't contest - allowing them to waltz into an open goal.

Our set up at stoppages is very poor - when we get clearances, it's slow and multiple handballs etc, but we allowed Geelong to just run straight through with no pressure. Selwood was standing by himself at times.

Our lack of pace in the midfield was badly exposed this week and last. When the opposition get the clearances, we can't get near any of them. Which makes their starting positions so much more important.

Too many of our defenders are going for the double handed punch, when they should be going for the mark. Yes, there is a time and place for the spoil, but a mark will kill the contest, yet nobody has the confidence to go for it.

Our skills are horrendous. From missing easy set shots, to missing easy field kicks. How many times did we kick straight to a Geelong player? They weren't even trying to intercept, we hit them lace out. This then got us exposed on the counter, and with the aforementioned lack of pace, means that we are left badly beaten.

Thomas was doing those things that have become foreign to me i.e. watching my team mentally stuff around with the other team up with physicality (which worked but only for small patches as we couldn't capitalise), like Essendon did with stray elbows last week and like all good teams do and get away with because that's how they play the game. maybe that's why Jonas hits stand out even more because it's aggression standing out in a not so aggressive team!! i think there are only a handful of guys that play with real aggressive fire - R. Gray, S. Gray, Dixon, DBJ, SPP - maybe some more - but it's controlled and contained under modern Port Adelaide which doesn't instill that in the playing group. obviously not talking sniping and getting suspended but you could tell he's been born and raised to play a certain way which we've just not seen in a few years now.

have to give props to Hamish Hartlett who was one that made me proud

It is ironic that the media criticises a crowd for booing Selwood when it is the media that has built his reputation as a ducking diving ambulance chasing cheat. Today Tonight. Elspeth Hussey. This is the world we live in. Who are the morons exactly?

As for the Lindsay Thomas bump on the other Selwood, did he even hurt him? I was envisaging the Cheltenham cemetery hearse appearing on the ground then suddenly Selwood bounces to his feet carry on nothing to see here.

I think that's why people booed.

Honestly the way our game plan is (hold the ball wait for a safe option, keep it off the opposition), the way Kenny speaks post match, how stubborn he is with selection..
He seems like a man trying to keep his job rather than win a premiership.

What a joke of a game, I don’t even know where to start. Shocking
Well he's doing a good job of that.
