Autopsy Round 6, 2020: Fremantle v St.Kilda

Parker was listed as "in the mix" - I assumed he was showing something - doesn't need to be much to be better than Marsh. Long will be suspended so needs to be replaced, Ross's performance from a senior player was disgraceful and should not be accepted and Paton is not playing that well.

Parker for Marsh

Webster for Long

Byrnes for Ross

Bytel for Paton

Your thoughts?
I think overall, those changes would make us a worse side.

One thing I sometimes see Seb do that drives me nuts is something I often saw Newnes do last year. It's slowing to a plodding lazy walk after momentarily being involved in the play instead of providing an option for his teammates, or instead of anticipating an obvious turnover and getting his ass over to somewhere useful. The good mids get the ball, give it off, then try to get it again. In a game where we all turned off our intensity like a tap, his lack of intensity still stood out. Jones usually has it for 4q, but he seemed off his tucker today.
Also felt that Steele needed to fire up more today. Go over and deck one of those blokes slamming into Hill over and again. Instead of those reportable brainfades, we might have done better with a melee out there today to fire the boys up. It might have even exhausted a couple of the Freo boys and helped us take advantage of the extra numbers.

So twice in the first 6 games of the season we've given up 5 goal leads when absolutely dominating. Its psychology no more and no less surely.

What is happening at the pivot point? What are the feelings? Who are the players looking for? Solve that and I'd hope you'll solve the outcome very quickly.

I had a conversation with a young work colleague early in the year who was in Melbourne out from Manila. He was explaining to me how "work life balance is important". I explained how yes quality of life is important but the opportunity in life he was being granted needs to be grabbed and taken to its full extent.
He had to go back to Manila on the last flight in lockdown 1.0 and has been in a full lockdown back at his parents and working from home as our office is closed down.
His work ethic has been amazing and has shot the lights out since. He messaged me this week that seeing the opportunities in Melbourne had changed his life. He's 23. I want some growth from our players.

On an emotional level... can we just say 2 votes Fyfe and here's 5 free kicks mate. And how a coach managed to f*ck the game in a post loss rant is a shame on the AFL

Problem we are gonna have in coming weeks is we got a soft draw initially. Weve faced many of those out of finals.

Not many easy games past Adelaide.

To come:
Port
Geelong
Wce
Essendon
Hawthorn
GWS
Brisbane
Melbourne

Maybe the easier ones:
GC
Sydney
Looks like we have 11 games coming up that could all be winnable yet all loseable if we have the same conceited attitude we displayed after quarter time.

This loss is season-ending, you don't come back from it.

36 points up against a poor team, 2 men from the opposition injured, on the verge of going top 3 on the ladder.

I can't wrap my head around how we managed to fu** it up and this lost opportunity will haunt the club for a long time.

Like this loss to the Hawks back in 1999 under Timmy Watson.

I was overseas at the time so thankfully I didn't see it but I heard about it, served us right for sacking a good coach in Alves for a Ch7 presenter in Watson.

I was against that coaching change at the time and I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

I don't think this loss will be so calamitous, we still have a good coach at the helm, Ratten is at the very least better than Timmy Watson but that's a low bar.

Yeah mate, that Hawks loss is the only home and away loss I remember that feels this bad supporting the club.

Thankfully such losses only come around once in 20 years or so.

Team for next week. Hill very lucky, last warning. Long, Geary, Ross, Marsh out.

Can someone explain to me Marsh starting centre bounces? I don't mind what Marsh brings up forward but honestly is he a midfielder? Would actually prefer to throw Lonie in there, he has proven himself as a mid at VFL level at least. Also Kent was said to be after midfield minutes. Ok maybe neither are going to be great mids bit if we are chucking Marsh in there then what the hell?

Cerra and Brayshaw killed us today. They are kids. Our midfield needs so much work, need to get a look at the likes of Bytel and Byrnes soon.

Honestly I'd drop Hill. He was dead set pathetic today strolling around like it was a park game against mates. No one expects him to be an inside mid but he does need to put his body on the line. He needs a wake up call.

In: Robbo, Sav, Webster, Ryder, Hind and Sinclair

Out: Long, Coffield, Paton, Marsh, Kent, Marshall (suspended/dropped)

Above names are obvious and Marshall because today, embarrassing, undisciplined, was getting dominated by Sean Darcy then had a perfect opportunity and still stuffed it up.
You’re back! I’ve missed you. You never fail to make me laugh.

People here bag Watters and Richo but we never had a loss as bad as we did today under them and they had less talented sides at their disposal.

You could bag Watters and Richo for their coaching ability but we always had a crack under them and never gave up which is what St Kilda prides itself on.

Today I thought we gave up at times and didn't have a crack and that's what hurts the most, that's not the St Kilda I know and love, we fight to the death.

Hill is a lazy one way runner who continues to not man up, not tackle, not shepherd and his ball use for all it's hype is meh. Really screws us when the opposition goes on the offense as someones not being manned up which leads to holes everywhere.

Marshall had a stinker today. Bonehead decision after bonehead decision.

Backline later in the game looked all at sea. No leadership telling our inexperienced group who should be where.

Geary is a captains ahole but i am resigned to the fact he plays because he is "captain"

Long very good. Will be missed.

Wilkie is mister rock solid.

Gresham cannot kick which puts him in the Dunstan category. If you can't dispose of the football properly then you don't play. Love his work rate and clearance work but i would trade him while he has value.

Seb Ross our other "captain" is not a captains ahole either. When the pressure goes on you can count on him to crumble.

It's not all doom and gloom, far from it. We simpily have no leadership which is costing us games and that's our main concern. The other is the midfield. Marshall is a lock to ruck, i don't want to bring in a witches hat aka Ryder as his replacement. Steele and Jones are also a lock. Who else to put there? Probably start with Billings...

What i want to see,

Out - Hill, Gresham, Ross, Geary, Long
In - Savage, Sinclair, Byrnes, Langlands, Bytel

What will happen

Out - Long
In - Ryder

If I was the St Kilda coach I would be having a movie night in the hub replaying old 90s games.

Like these ones.

That would show our pampered players the required intensity, fight and spirit that the St Kilda jumper deserves.

You didn't see those St Kilda teams slacking off for a couple of quarters like we did today, they didn't slack off for a couple of seconds let alone quarters.

Our best is very good. Its improved out of sight. Like a red hot knife through butter.

Or worst has remained as per richo. Probably susceptible to being cut open on the turn over.

We have no middle ground and or worst hasn't improved.

I suspect the lack of defensive running means we might get more results like we had against the pies vs rhe very top sides.

We had worse under richo. Had ****in 10 goals piled on before they decided the game started usually in the 2nd qtr.

Other times we'd have 100 shots on goal and come away with 5 behinds.

Always ended in some ****ed up members video worse than the actual game its self. "G'day saints fan. Really poor effort today. We need to bounce back. If players care. If the club cares we'll show that next week".

Next week comes around and we are all beer and skittles on here because we were somewhat competitive and got beaten by 30 points instead of 60.

Completely forgetting richos comments from the previous week. Confirming that they indeed do not care.

3-3 is acceptable but whats not acceptable is the manner of our losses against Nm & Freo. A team that has all the talent and leads by sh*t loads with opposition losing 2-3 men at half time and you still end up on the losing side is just weak mentality.

KO Mike Tyson one week, mugged by someone’s grandma the next. Only St Kilda can do that to you. We should have the Big Dipper as our crest.

we stopped running... not saying it's an excuse but we looked cooked from the heat. Though we also weren't cracking in, which the heat has little to do with. For me the biggest let down re Hill is his attack on the ball. I know he's not meant to be a contested ball winning mid but there was one incident in particular where there was a player coming the other way and instead of going for it he took a short step and threw out a hand, it wasn't good enough. But the main thing with Hill is we need to figure out how to use him better, we need to get him on the end of more handball chains going inside 50 so he can hit up targets like he did membrey directly in front. Once we get that right from a coaching perspective we'll be very happy we snagged him.

as for the game it's hard to pin it on any one player. Our captain, Callum Wilkie, was solid. Hopefully a few boys will get their chance next week to cement a spot in the team.
