Without looking it up, do you want to guess how many more tackles per game over his career he has than Willie Rioli, a player who has never had to identify himself as a 'pressure forward' because he also actually gets the ball and kicks goals and gets goal assists?

The fact that Rioli is good at both things doesn't mean Jed isn't good at one of those things. If we had another Rioli I'd gladly play him ahead of Jed but we don't.

Also, all of Jed's career averages are distorted by the sub vest he regularly wore early in his career. There were two games he literally didn't even get on the field that count in his averages.

I mean he's 21.8 career and even his biggest critics would surely have to admit he's got a very tidy set shot routine but you do you Tiger.

From 36 games. Which is roughly a bit over half a goal per a game or 0.8 shots on goal per a game. His tackles inside 50 is “elite” at 1.8.

I agree, it’s a decent conversation rate, but as a small forward, in a team that has been generally winning (not bottom 4), I don’t think it is enough.

For context Rioli is about 1.3 goals per a game and 1.4 for tackles in forward 50, Cameron (probably the best small forward in the game at the moment) is 1.8 goals per a game and 1.3 for tackles inside the 50.

Is that extra .4 of a tackle really worth it?

After my last comment. I do agree with your point here.

Is he though? Have you ever heard anyone describe Rioli as an elite defensive forward? He's okay at it, sure, but is he actually notably good? Do you think Rioli would still get games under any coach not named Ken Hinkley if you knocked 4 disposals and nearly a goal per game off of his offensive output?

Jed isn't an elite defensive forward. He's not bad at it, in fairness to him, but he's not elite at it either. He's just okay at it. People say he is an elite defensive forward because they can't think of any other possible reason such a massive spud would be getting regular games, and they have failed to take 'Ken Hinkley is an idiot' into account.

Jed goes at 2.8 tackles per game. Here are what the actual elite defensive forwards go at per game, while also averaging more disposals and/or goals per game than Jed (noting that most sides don't even have one of these players, because they don't value the role at all):

Beau McCreery - 3.8
Sam Switkowski - 4.3
Toby Bedford - 3.4
Jamie Cripps - 3.9
Sam Wicks - 4.0
Nick Holman - 4.5
Lachie Fogarty - 3.8
Alex Neal-Bullen - 4.2
Dan Butler - 3.8
Bonus historical example: Jake Neade (lol) - 3.7

If Jed was putting up actually elite defensive numbers like this, maybe you could wear his lack of offence. If Jed was putting up even adequate offensive numbers, maybe you could wear the fact that he's only okay defensively and not elite. But he is neither of those things.

Also, all of Jed's career averages are distorted by the sub vest he regularly wore early in his career. There were two games he literally didn't even get on the field that count in his averages.
'Regularly'? Jed has been sub 3 times in a 36 game career, we're well past this being an excuse. He also hasn't been a starting sub at all the last two seasons and his averages are still terrible.

Every Port fan's favourite player Ned McHenry has been subbed 8 times and still manages to match Jed's tackle numbers, plus more disposals and the same amount of goals. You a big McHenry fan?

Optimistic scenario: in Dixon’s absence, our forward line becomes a lot more dynamic and free scoring, with players leading into space, etc.

Pessimistic scenario: in Dixon’s absence, we instead bomb the ball on Sweet’s head 32 times for an outcome of 2 marks and 1 goal 1.
With 2 career goals to his name, Sweet would probably be pretty happy with 1.1.

I do think Soldo might snag a couple though. He has impressive goal sense as a ruckman, although it's mostly been when playing in the ruck. So it'll be interesting to see how that translates when he spends more time as a forward with our bomb and hope strategy.

There is something soothing about port games whilst local footy is on

Either we lose and I'm spared the heartache or we win and I can watch a kayo mini

Jeez whens the last time we beat Collingwood at the mcg? Can only recall that final about 10 years ago.

Collingwood woeful this year so we should account of them easily.
Can't see us winning easily - I'd happily take a 1 point win. But the Pies barely got past the winless Hawks, which suggests they're not the side they were last year. If we're to be seen as contenders this year, we MUST win this game.
