Autopsy Round 7, 2024 : Hawks get pecked by Swans

Nothing instinctive about how we play. Constantly invite more trouble by holding the ball a couple seconds too long trying to work out what to do with it. Then defensively we are also a second or 2 slow to shut things down which usually opens up options all the way down the ground

I said it in the gameday thread, we turned up, then the players packed it in after a couple of bad calls.

I am a broken record in my next obser - We are in desperate need of LEADERS. We have noone who is vocal, getting players to lead and create space, Players to zone etc.
Sicily is not a leader this year. He's gone from possibly the best captain in the league to the worst

Gotta give credit to Dylan Moore, he didn't stop running all game, and about the only player that can walk away saying "I tried"

Plenty of players with obvious talent, but a real worrying lack of cohesion.

The Swans just know exactly where to be and where team mates are at any given moment, despite being young themselves.

That's the frustrating part.

Seeing Scrim, French, Newk, Amon, Seamus and others win really impressive balls in congestion only to realise they have ZERO easy options to give the ball to is infuriating when you watch the opposition do it with ease.

So many questions decisions.

Ramsden as sub?
Serong subbed off and replaced by Gunston down back?
Forward structure?
What role is Weddle being told to play? One of our biggest weapons and just being wasted.

And I’m still fuming about those two goals that were turned over.

immediate response:

  • most frustrating point from today for mine was hearing our crowd boo Chol. Disgusting
  • Our forward structure is a mess. Lewis being a late out was a pre-game death knell. Need Lewis, Watto and Wingard desperately.
  • Our midfield is offensively strong, but defensively deplorable. Caught lacking too many times.
  • Scrim, Moore, Meek, Day, and Frenchie showed something whilst the rest of the team lowered their colours.
  • Day got through uninjured
  • Have to learn to deal with poor umpiring on field. Yes there were several 12 point plays that were instigated by them, but we've got to ride that out and learn to deal with it.

Fact is Sydney is one of the best teams in the comp, and we are one of the youngest/least developed.
Frustrated, but not overly disheartened

Starts with the captain and ours just cruises around, points fingers but not inspiring efforts.
We are a mile away from being competitive as every position is lacking.
Relying on Gunstan to be anything these days is delusional, poor in a contested contest and zero ground pressure when required.
Think we have actually outsmarted ourselves going on a youth path, you need someone to set examples and our example setters just don't do it.

Not much you can say after that except that Sam Mitchell really only has 2 plugs that he can build a premiership side around - Day (unsighted after 1st qtr but first game etc) and Weddle (extraordinary talent). That’s it. We need to trade anyone with value for top 5 picks this year and next.

Coaches box and selection just makes you wonder how much of an idea these guys actually have ?? It’s starting to get concerning. Yes we are developing but we need to be somewhat competitive. Currently we are a soft joke that opposition would be creaming themselves to play. Also concerning is where our list management has left us.

If it wasn’t for North Melbourne, this is as bad as it gets folks. North have some kids actually getting the football though so…

Yes, I’m sad.

Spot on, we can't find an outside play to save ourselves, then get swamped and out she goes, forward of the contest.

Equal biggest Loss of the whole AFL season (Dogs vs WCE) 76 points.

We have so little faith in each other on the field - constantly 3 players drawn to the opposition player with the ball or 4 players flying for the mark.

At one point in the last I saw 4 players crashed into each other and all end up on the ground. Embarrassing.

Wtf was that spray to Scimmers?

Mitchell holding him to a much higher standard than the rest of the team.
Sadly for Scrim he is one of our more senior players.
I think he was made an example of because the coach knows he can take it and will respond well- which he did.
Just hope he got shown love at the end, because he was one of if not our best today.

Time for CMac to go sort himself out at Box Hill
Shouldn't get another game until his numbers show he works harder defensively than running forward

Another lamentable performance

The difference in skill, application and discipline between the two sides was enormous.

We just cannot cover Day and our key position players being out injured for all or most of the year.

Even our back up Key position players “ Phillips and McCabe “ have been out injured.

We are the second youngest list in the AFL. At the end of 2024 we could well be the youngest as the game as truely passed Gunston and Bruest by.

Time to give Phillips a run and net our self an early mid season draft pick to play the second half of the year.

Sam is safe for the remainder of his contract. To go this young was a joint decision with management.

How many goals did they kick from snaps out of the contest in F50 stoppages? Felt like a lot. At no point did we have anyone go defend the goal line which would have saved just about all of them.
