Given their recent history against us they have every right to enter next Monday night's game with a fair amount of confidence.

Couldn't agree more. I would think they would be reasonably confident about this game. They have had the wood on us. And they weren't that bad in their two games. We, on the other hand, got the job done comfortably in the end but were far from impressive against the Dees. We have got so much to improve on to become a side that teams fear coming up against.

This game will be closer than people think. They will give us a really tough game. We have got to improve tenfold to comfortably account for them.

The thing for St Kilda is they are playing a physically taxing game style which sees their younger players struggling to run the game out. For this to be successful they need to get some scoreboard pressure happening early. Against Collingwood they didn't score heavily enough in the first half when they were probably playing better than Collingwood. To beat St Kilda our defence needs to hold up early & then we should be able to capitalise as a number of their players fatigue.

Totally agree. Don't get me wrong, if we are serious about making an impression, we should beat them, and beat them well. I think our talent runs deeper than theirs. I think most people would agree with that. But talent alone doesn't win you games. Endeavour and ferocity at the contest does. And that's where we have been shown up by them in the past. They have been way more fierce than us and a lot more physical. I just hope we don't get sucked in by their physical, bullying style that has been successful against us previously. Last years game on the Monday night was embarrassing to watch. We were woeful. I didn't think they were that impressive, it was just we let them dictate the game and do as they pleased. It made me sick seeing guys like Milera kick bags of 3 goals in each game we played them. Like seriously, Milera? I would just like us to stand up to them for once and be ruthless and not cop that bullshit. Show the footy world we are serious about where we want to go with our footy.

That game against the Dees was far from convincing and if we play like that against the Saints, I'm not convinced we will beat the Saints. I''m still really concerned about our entries into the forward line. We are giving ourselves enough opportunities in terms of going forward but we are not capitalising enough on our work.

st kilda didn't play too bad against collingwood last friday night,
so we need to look at the game as one of those danger games that if we lose it'll cost us some momentum going into the game against port.
speed works, has worked in our last couple of wins against them, so as long as we keep a tight defence and take our chances whenever an opportunity presents itself.
I'd be happy just to see concentration for longer and a win to be honest.

Thursday evening will tell a tale.. but I think...

In: Kreuzer, Gibbs, Carrazzo
Out: Waite, Yarran, Cachia

Still unsure about all 3 rucks in the side but it looks as though we will face that dilemma sooner rather than later.
Not sure if Gibbs will play as it's been mentioned he would be back following week.
For mine, this week:

Ins: Carrazzo, Casboult

Outs: Ellard(very unlucky), Waite

Going on a like-for-like basis.

Team selection will be interesting this week.

Carrazzo either to return next week or the week after and Gibbs & Kreuzer are available for selection.

From the Coach's email I just received .........

A pleasing aspect of the performance was the manner in which the players stepped up when their time came. A case in point, young Jaryd Cachia, who came on for his first senior hit-out and looked like a man made for AFL football.

We do have at our disposal a couple of players putting pressure on Jaryd - such as Andrew Carrazzo who returns either next week or the week after, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer who are also set to resume, along with others playing some pretty good footy at VFL level – but fellows like Jaryd have responded in the best possible way in the roles that they’ve been delegated.

Despite playing a seemingly inferior team that probably won't feature in the finals, I think this is as important a game as we'll play this year. It'll really demonstrate if we've become a stronger side - mentally.

My confidence levels are not high.

Agreed. We have a penchant for getting owned in clutch games at Etihad.

gotta say early on this year I thought curnow was a preseason footballer..but the stopping jobs he is doing and getting his own ball is fantastic, has well and truly gone past ellard IMO....

A player like Curnow can really flourish under Malthouse. His Long kicks down the line are mitigated by the boundary line game plan. So his weakness are accounted for and we still reap the benefits of his strong contest, elite fitness, and gut running.

St Kilda are a real bogey side. Would love to smash them.

Yes I was Sin. I expected him to shank a few but his field kicking was spot on. Shame he sprayed that kick for goal though.

Wish there was a way for Cachia stay in but I just can't see how.

Anyone else pleasantly surprised by his kicking on Sunday?

Maybe he will as there's still plenty of time for injury or illness to strike a player or two before Monday.

If effort counts for anything then Cachia, Ellard and Bell would be in the team on Monday.
That's not to say that some players aren't putting in, but these three guys look as though they're playing for their lives right now and have all strung together a series of quality games in the VFL.

It's tough that one and possibly all may not be in the team should we have a clean injury list.

It's interesting that some people didn't believe that we could play McLean and Curnow/Ellard in the team because they were "too similar". At the moment we have McLean, Curnow, Ellard and Cachia with others calling for Bell to come in!

Curnow has been given more scope to run and link in recent weeks and I'm not sure whether it's just be but he seems to be somewhat faster this year.

Ellard is O.K. in the centre and can also play the negating forward role very well whilst kicking goals himself.

Cachia is the negating mid. Has terrific understanding of how to keep his opponent out of the action whilst getting kicks himself. Carrazzo replacement?

Bell is the Bull and doesn't really tag. Spending a lot of time through the middle but also dropping forward and kicking goals.

They're actually all somewhat different in terms of the roles they've given to develop, although I think that Curnow and Bell possibly have the most similar type roles.

Could make it interesting come the trade period.

Come the trade period (this suggestion might be 'over the top'), but I reckon we should make a serious play for nick reiwoldt. I know this is a post best suited for Drafts and Trading, but if we were to trade perhaps one of cachia, bell or curnow and a first round pick to the saints, could snag us reiwoldt for his last remaining years as a footballer.

Biggest obstacle will be salary cap, with Judd signing a new deal (hopefully) at the end of the year without aid from Visy...

Reiwoldt won't demand nearly the amount he is getting at the saints, just to have one last crack at a flag.

They have been for a very long time even in our 95 Premiership year.

Must win game!!!

I can remember a time when smashing St Kilda was as certain as the sun rising in the east & setting in the west. Astonishing that their overall wins against us is now 50, yet barely a decade ago it was in the low 30s.

Wish there was a way for Cachia stay in but I just can't see how.

This has been the main difference I have noticed in the VFL this season from where he was at 2 years ago. Now uses the ball well & has a reasonably penetrating kick, in contrast to his kicking skills 2 years ago being not unlike Curnow's current kicking skills.

Not that surprised, given what we had seen of him at Norwood. Has absolutely flourished over there, and has come back a much more complete footballer. I'm with you SC, would be great for him to get another game, but if Carrazzo comes back, I can't see this happening
