Game Day Round 8 St Kilda vs West Coast

Except we’ve shown already that we’re not the Bulldogs of 2016, we’ve got two massive scalps playing the way we did last year. We’ve hit a rough spot. Remember last year when we lost 3 on the trot and got embarrassed at home by Essendon?

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

I like the cut of your jib. West Coast by several big kicks and a couple of smaller ones.

Masten, what a muppet. Thank goodness he's been dropped.
Thank goodness we aren’t one of those fanbases who treat their premiership players with disrespect.

Oh, wait.

Glad Waterman is in. Think he'll add something to the backs, considering Barrass who I think is one the most underrated backmen in the league is out. I pray he comes back soon, he's consistent and able to shut down almost anyone he's marking.

I feel if St Kilda are smart, they'll play a similar game to Port, who shut us down with hard won ball on the ground, something we're still struggling with. We're also consistently making small errors in the wet, which cost us goals, literally every goddamn turnover. Saw that against the Suns with that slippery ball. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wet ball and wet games have always been a massive achilles for us. I wonder if we would have thumped the Demons so convincingly last year had it been raining at home?

Also, it has to be said, our kick out of contest to nowhere, especially with wet balls is really costing us. Kick and hope killed us vs. Port and I saw a bit of that 2nd half again the Suns.

I reckon we'll win if we can play all 4 quarters and our defense holds up. I worry about our midfield and our supply... I have full faith in our boys and our staff, I'm sure they saw the errors and got a fair pineappling from Simmo who was clearly livid and more animated, probably because the errors we saw in the game were the exact same ones he drilled them about pre-game. Let's hope we're on the up and up.

My two cents.

Can't wait to move back and watch my first games at the new stadium!

I just want to see a 4 quarter performance where we don't wait until the second quarter to show up and don't leave after half time. I want to see an utter domination for a full game resulting in a flogging, haven't seen this in a while. I want us to flex out muscle and show that we are still capable of doing what we did last year at our best.

Have a feeling this game will have some surprises, from ins+outs to players performances, to results...just don't know if that will be a good thing or a bad thing...maybe a mixed bag?
But yeh, a 4 quarter effort, no drop off, pedal to the metal, wouldn't that be something?

People relax, Masten is a great player except just not this season, he hasn't been up to WC's standard of play, which judging by how they're playing in some games isn't very high.

Wouldn't it make more sense to let Waterman play forward and swing Allen back?

- He wasn't too bad there last year
- Has played stints in the WAFL back
- Is probably hanging onto his spot at the moment by virtue of being a backup backup ruck.

Might end up being a reasonable move structurally if it clears space for Kennedy/JD, helps our transition into 50 and provides another good mark down back.

Do you see how your above comment is in some tension with this generic, playing-the-man sorta tripe?

Instead of telling other people to relax, you'd do better to just put more thought into future posts. People here love discussion about our team, but will consistently call you out on thoughtless throwaway lines. :)
What's pretty clear from our match committee decisions to date is that we're not happy with how we're structuring up under these new rule changes. Whether it's individuals not playing their role well enough, or the roles not working as well in the current playing environment, I don't think we've figured that out fully either.

Masten out is probably a victim of both. So it's going to be really interesting this weekend to see what the implications are for how we structure up.

If the midfield can up their defensive pressure, we will get this. Need to force the saints midfield to kick long. Hoping Vards gets physical here to try and win back his spot so that we can go back to the two ruckmen plan when Hickey is fit.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't O Allen play defence last year? Will he maybe be going down back to make way for Waterman? Or will Waterman be on the wing?

Regardless of what people think of Masten, averaging 14.4 possessions and 1.7 tackles per game is not good enough for a midfielder. Premiership or not, changes needed to be made. He is not performing as well as he has been and we have others who can do better or deserve a chance to do better.

Also, i am a little concerned about the addition of even more height to your team... certainly keeping with the kick'n'mark at all costs game plan.

Jacko on 96fm this morning was saying the alarm bells are ringing. We've lost 12 of the last 14 qtrs.He said our season starts here and if we lose we are gone;back in the pack fighting for 7th,8th or 9th.Think i agree.

He's right a loss here and top four is pretty much gone. Conversely if we were to dig deep, find some form and win the next 3/4 then we are right in the hunt. The last thing we want to do is have Nic Nat return while still playing like crud and expect him to turn us around, he is a luxury.

OK sure, I love the Eagles to and love talking about them, I'm just happy that Masten is out and I'm sure many of us hate the new rule changes as well.

Masten out is a victim of his rubbish returns this year... 14 average disposals? 1.7 tackles? Cant find the ball and doesn't impact when he is off the ball. if he wasnt a 200 game premiership player, he would have been out after round 3 or 4

beats venables 9 disposal average per game.
