Rested/managed usually doesn't play at either level, so that's to be expected. If he played VFL he'd lose his match payment, whereas not playing due to being rested/managed he'd still get his AFL match payment just as if he were injured during a game. Limited minutes as a sub is another way to do it though (not something we've tried this year).
