What was Whitecross' role last week? was hard to tell from the TV footage. Would love to see him make a position his own, seems like a kid that would be great once his confidence is up.

Started as a defensive forward then moved down back and pulled the rapist's pants down.

thought he did some great spoils late in the game when he was a defender... whitecross that is...

would love to see him as a Small defender... would give him the roll on mcglynn

WX seems alot more natural down back then forward. Should just leave him there and stick Hodgey upforward

Re: Teams: Hawthorn vs Sydney Sunday 22nd May

Yeah mate, you're spot on there. Perhaps he was a bit sore too- as you say he has no form line to get dropped from squad. I thought he was stiff last week too, considering he was given 3rd best against Port.

I'm reasonably confident that it is BAILEY, BREUST, LADSON, LEWIS

Smith may actually have a light run with Box Hill, depending on how sore. Not sure they could be overly impressed with his disposal as of yet, but boy can he run :)

Smith wasn't selected for Box Hill. He really must be carrying something from the Saints game.

Whitecross would ideally be a half-back/wingman. But we have enough players vying for the HB roll, so maybe a high half forward/wingman is spot he should be targeting.

I would go with all of Bailey, Schoenmakers and Lisle in the starting line up. Max in the ruck and Lisle to take Hale's spot as the third tall forward with Rough as the second ruck. Looks a much more balanced line up to me with the extra tall. Only thing not too sure about is if it would be a bit top heavy against the Swans and at the SCG but still looks a good line up.

It will be interesting to read/hear who ends up flying over to Sydney, as we may be able to gauge the likelihood of any late changes from that.

Prior to team selections being released, the general consensus had been there was an injury cloud over Puopolo given he had to be rested forward after sustaining an injury against the Saints, while whether Rioli is right to come or not is anyone's' guess.

Given his form on the weekend, Ladson would be the logical replacement for Puopolo, whilst I wonder about whether we can afford to have all three of Osborne, Breust and Rioli in the forward line against the Swans. If not, could we see Rioli miss one more game perhaps with Ozzy+Breust both playing as they did last week?

If both Rioli and Pup are late changes, with Ladson and Breust from the extended interchange taking their spots in the starting 18, that only leaves one of the remaining extended players to miss, which should be Young (no wing to play on at the SCG and form hasn't warranted an inclusion).

Would we then be too tall, however, with Bailey, Shoenmakers and Lisle all coming in? Back to the 3 tall forward line with Roughy+Bailey to alternate the rucking and 3rd tall forward perhaps?

If Rioli is fit he won't be the one missing out.

That would be fairly obvious.

What I was trying to get as was that all three of them were named, albeit Breust on an extended interchange, along with a handful of talls and Im not convinced we will play all three of the smalls at the SCG, so if we're looking for a player who may be a late withdraw, there could be a sign in that - especially given the uncertainty over his hammy issues the past few weeks.

Hopefully he does get up and is right to play, but it will be very interesting to see which three get the chop to 'emergency' status and just how many talls we stick with in the final 22 squad.

Should know a bit more in the near future.

I still have no idea what to make of the declared team.

The only certainty seems to be Bailey in, given that Roughie is apparently our ruckman this weekend and no Roof. Echoes of 2010 when Renouf carried all? Fingers crossed for Large Max.

Will Rioli play? Ladson? Poppers? An under-prepared Schoey or Lisle? Back or forward? Sub?

Meh. Luck to Clarkson in figuring it all out. We should be able to get away with a small defence against Geese (amazed no Trent-Lane)... have to stay on top of JK-cubed and Mighty Mouse.

My four would be Bailey, Shoenmakers, Lewis & Rioli.

I suspect that we will end up going with Bailey, Lewis, Bruest and Ladson. (Continuing the ridiculous undersized backline trend that Clarkson seems to have wholeheartedly embraced for over 2 years despite results that indicate this selection strategy is a failure.)

It will be very frustrating if Shoenmakers is not given a game. Also, I know he's down on form but Young offers so much more than Ladson. I can't find a spot for him (assuming Rioli is fit) but his kicking would be really valuable on the smaller SCG.

The AFL made Tassies ground smaller to fall into line with ground regulations yet they are happy for games to be played at the SCG on a Juniors ground which baffles me.

Hodge Sewell Lewis and Mitchell must play blinders in the middle and win clearance after clearance for us to have any shot.

if our defenders are put under the pump from Sydneys quick clearances on this small ground we are up the creek without a paddle end of story.

Bolton Kennedy Mcglynn Goodes Mumford and Okeefe are all built like Tarzan so our mids will have a real challenge in tight.

Re: Teams: Hawthorn vs Sydney Sunday 22nd May

Smith out with soreness already?:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:
Big Max in!!:thumbsu::thumbsu:

He's probably not that sore. Perhaps just a nice way of saying 'omitted'. Had a taste, now have a spell, keep improving and come back later on.

Anyone know if he's playing at BHH? If not, I guess he is 'sore'.

Re: Teams: Hawthorn vs Sydney Sunday 22nd May

i would set Burgoyne this task, done little for a few weeks now and needs to make a stance on his worth to the team.

Actually don't mind the Burger v Goodes idea. Has Burger ever 'run with' before? If it involves him following Goodes in the middle it might also be a great way to get Burger involved in the clearances. A speciality of his that is mighty handy at the postage stamp.

Re: Teams: Hawthorn vs Sydney Sunday 22nd May

Ladson was very good for Box Hill on Saturday, but do you rush him straight back in after a week in the magoos? I'd let him continue to find form in the VFL. Spots should be earned on the back of demonstrated run of good form, IMO..

Form doesn't always require weeks to come back. It is a by product of confidence and can come within a game or an instance within a game. Sounds like he played pretty well last week and maybe a week was all the kick up the bum he needed.

He's not named at BHH.

I for one would love to see him Be the one to take on O'Keefe. Would be a good match-up physically and if he holds his own would be a great win for us:)
