Round one selection dilemmas

Blairy's a bit like Shane O'Bree circa 2010 - a likable, loyal and dependable foot-soldier but offering very little "hurt factor" and must necessarily be pushed aside by more potent teammates if we are to again go deep in the finals. So too Sinclair, Toovey, Macaffer and Goldsack. We've seen what they all offer. None of them have significant improvement left in them.

I think this is a fair comparison - In 2010, we still had the likes of Shane O'Bree, Tarkyn Lockyer, Paul Medhurst, Jack Anthony, Josh Fraser, who all ended 2009 as part of our best 22, but were superseded (necessarily so) by other players in 2010.

I don't have a problem with the fact that those guys are on our list, because they're not already way behind others campaigning for their spots, but they each have presumptive guys who should take their spots in 2016.

Blair: Aish, Broomhead, Phillips, Smith, Crocker
Sinclair: Ramsey, Maynard
Toovey & Goldsack: Marsh, Oxley, Maynard, Scharenberg (eventually)
Macaffer: Crisp, Greenwood, Howe

Gault has been crucial to our structures during all 3 NAB games.
He is definitely ahead of Moore for round 1 selection, but I think they will go all 3 Cloke, Gault and Moore with Witts rucking and Grundy out vs Swans.
Gault - Average 70% NAB gametime = 8 goals 2 points (Should be 9 goals, De Goey shanks a kick vs North where Gault was 30m in front all alone)
Fasolo - Average 75% NAB gametime = 9 goals 2 points
Moore - Average 50% NAB gametime = 4 goals 1 point
Next is Blair and Varcoe with 4 goals each.
Cloke not even in our top 5 goal kickers for 3 games and we actually won all 3 games.
I think that's amazing.
Let's not get carried away - I think Gault has earned a shot for the start of season because he is ahead of White and Cox, and most seem to think we can't play both of our first rucks in the same team, at least not yet.
I really hope that Gaulty can keep it up - I really do - although:
- his kicking for goal will have to be better than last week as he most likely won't get as many chances as Moore or Cloke in the season proper;
- he'll have to make a much better fist of it than last year

My guess is:
B: Williams Brown Toovey
HB: Langdon Frost Sinclair
C: Crisp Treloar Sidebottom
HF: Swan Cloke Fasolo
F:Blair Gault Moore
Int: Varcoe Aish De Goey Greenwood

Not wild about Toovey and Blair being in the team but think that's what they'll do.

I'm not his biggest fan at all, but Blair has earnt his spot for Rd 1 - what happens from there on is a different story all together but he should be playing given solid pre-season form.

Let me just say I like Blair and what he brings to the table.

Two years in a row he has started the season well and run out of steam.

IMO he has to make the transition this year from an average player to a GOOD average player as the kids are nipping at his heals.

My guess is:
B: Williams Brown Toovey

HF: Swan Cloke Fasolo
F:Blair Gault Moore
Int: Varcoe Aish De Goey Greenwood

Gault rucking solo?

My guess for Round 1 (presuming Reidy's fit):

Ramsay, Brown, Frost (matchups)
Langdon, Reid, Williams
Varcoe, Pendles, Crisp
Swan, Cloke, Steele
Fasolo, Moore, Gault

Foll: Witts, Treloar, Adams
Bench: Blair, Greenwood, De Goey, Sinclair

I would like to see Aish in the side instead of Sinclair and I'm sure he will get plenty of games, but the small amount of game-time that he got in NAB3 has me thinking he'll need to do a lot to play Round 1.

B:
Alan Toovey, Nathan Brown, Tyson Goldsack
HB: Tom Langdon, Ben Reid, Marley Williams
C: Steele Sidebottom, Adam Treloar, Jack Crisp
HF: Dane Swan, Darcy Moore, Travis Varcoe
F: Jamie Elliott, Travis Cloke, Alex Fasolo
FOLL: Brodie Grundy, Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams
INT: Levi Greenwood, Jeremy Howe, Jordan De Goey, James Aish

This team is contingent on the fitness of stars Ben Reid and Jamie Elliott, along with Tyson Goldsack, who is battling knee tendinitis but at his best is an important player for his versatility and battle hardness. If either he or Reid are unavailable, the Pies can call on the likes of stiff pair Jonathon Marsh and Jack Frost. All three high-profile recruits get a guernsey – Adam Treloar slots straight into the centre while Jeremy Howe and James Aish were favoured for their flexibility, class and, importantly, their kicking skills in a team needing more quality ball users. Elevated rookie Corey Gault misses out, but the Pies risk being top-heavy if he plays alongside Travis Cloke and Darcy Moore. On form, Gault actually deserves a game ahead of Cloke. Other difficult omissions include premiership players Brent Macaffer and Jarryd Blair. - Ben Collins

You've resolved the ruck dilemma quite nicely...do away with the both of them! Bit harsh to drop the captain, though!

But I think you've just forgotten to add a line of players...

The only one in that backline that is reliable by foot is Reid and the second ruck being the second key forward doesn't work. One of Witts or Gault comes in for a small.

He's a moral. Don't understand hate on him. Always has a crack and one of our best kicks for goal.

Toovey won't play round 1. He might be depth now. Marsh needs to play now and make mistakes. He is a potential 200 gamer.

If Goldy is fit I'd play him over Langdon. Better kick , quicker and great tackler.

Aish is in the 2s.

I think our rucks will spend plenty of time behind the ball like the old days. Witts looked like Dempsey a few times sitting a kick behind play against the dogs.

Sinclair has been one of the best pre season so I reckon he has to play. If he plays deep it allows Marley to run from half back.

C: Sidebottom, Treloar, Crisp
HF: Swan, Moore, Varcoe
F: Blair Cloke, Fasolo

If Aish and Reid aren't fit, bring in Sinclair and Frost for them.

If Reid misses, Maynard or Toovey to replace him.

Blair has absolutely earned his spot. However, I expect both Elliott (once he recovers from his funeral) or Howe to take his place at some point. Aisho will also become a best 22 at some point and Broomhead has a chance too.

I agree with this team but still can't decide between Grundy and Gault. If Reidy out, Oxley in for me.

I'd rather Puopolo over Blair because he's quicker.

Stats height etc. I really couldn't care about because they both have specific roles and play them both adequately Puopolo's burst speed puts him ahead for mine.
Oddly though Blair being on our list is easier to select.

In saying I'm not crazy about Blair and Toovey being in the team, I've never been in the haters camp for either, and think they've deserved their spot in the past. Do really hope that other, younger players push past them both this year though. Neither are young players anymore, nor do either of them seem to have much likely improvement left in them.

I guess it would be a better team with Grundy, Pendlebury and Adams in, rather than playing three men short!

Three extra players would help, but I'm not really sure about Pendlebury. He's 27 and probably doesn't have that much improvement left in him. It might be time to give a youngster a run.

Blair comes in on form and stays there until somebody pushes him out. Given Elliot Howe and Broomhead are all waiting to come in, he'll have his work cut out...but form is form. Toovey may not be best 22 already. Close call but our small/medium defenders are pretty young (Ramsay, Maynard, Langdon, Marsh) or injury prone (Sinclair, Williams to a lesser extent)....so Toovey will get his chances. he remains out best one on one blanket defender but that might not be enough.

Jamie Elliot, Howe, Goldsack?

What a slack article!
