Round one selection dilemmas

My best 22 for the start of the year now would be:

Sinclair, Brown, Maynard
Langdon, Frost (Reid), Marley
Varcoe, Pendles, Crisp
Steele, Cloke, Swan
Fasolo, Moore, Gault (Howe)

Foll: Grundy, Adams, Treloar
Int: Greenwood, De Goey, Blair, Broomhead (Elliott)

The players with brackets are automatic like for like ins (structurally) if they are injury free.

The only hard decisions:

*Whether Maynard plays over Marsh/Ramsay/Toovey/Oxley. I think he offers more long term and just needs more exposure at afl level;
*Not giving Aish a spot. If he is to become the player we hope, he needs exposure, even if his performances don't warrant it.
*To a lesser extent, not playing two pure rucks. I think Moore can provide a decent chop out.

So your view is dependent on Reid's fitness as well?

I'm thinking we'll see:

Franklin v Reid/ Frost
Tippett/ Sinclair v Brown
Papley v Sinclair
Heeney v Marsh
Rose v Ramsay
Resting mids v Williams and Langdon

This is going to be a very different Sydney to the one we've seen the past few years forward of centre and one capable of putting bulk pressure on the ball carrier. Of all our current defenders Frost is the one that's least safe with ball in hand and I think how we use it in the back third is going to tell the tale of the tape with how we defend for much of 2016. Ultimately I'm just not as convinced that Frost is the lock he's been considered so far because his ability to smother an opponent may not be enough to cover his skill weaknesses.

I think Heeney is to smart for Marsh at this point in time despite only playing one season. I would prefer Ramsay or Langdon.

We will definitely need mobile backs

I would have thought the same when Marsh was pitted against Stringer last weekend, but he was very strong defensively so I'll back him in if it falls that way. If we don't go with Marsh though I'd be more inclined to go with Toovey personally.

Still thinking about my 22/25 for Sydney, but as an aside, when did we recruit all these left footers? I remember not so long ago thinking that Hawthorn had a lot of them - that team you've picked has 10.
Sorry if that's not even slightly interesting to people! :p

Ramsay deserves a game over Maynard and Tooves.
You selected 2 rucks, can't complain I personally would go Gault over one of them though

Edit: No Langdon is just wrong imo

No Langdon...Is it the hair thing again?

The hair doesn't help. I have nothing against him and still think he has a good career ahead. Just think he is low on confidence at the moment.

Ramsay or Sinclair, toss of a coin.

I know I am alone on this board, but I don't rate brown particularly highly. To me, he's a solid one on one defender if he gets the right match up, and that's it. His ball use is ordinary and he doesn't peel off to help out his teammates very regularly, and unlike presti, he's not the best matchup for many of the most dangerous forwards around. Eg. Franklin is way too agile for him, ditto riewoldt and Cameron. Fwiw, I'd play brown,Reid and Frost against the swans, with Marsh missing out.

I'm probably missing something. The other day I read someone claim that he is our most important player, but I have no idea why.
So who would you play against Franklin?

Frost will take Buddy and Brown will take Tippett, or whoever plays full forward. Brown is one of the first players picked.

Yeah. Didn't cover himself in glory in the NAB, but even when he stank he still read the play better than most. Bun or no bun, hope they don't drop him.

Good luck to Frost on Buddy. I predict Buddy will take him apart. Naturally I hope I am wrong. Brown is not the answer. Perhaps Goldsack could stay with him, but he is not available.

Frost has done well on Buddy in the past.

Has he? I must be out of touch with the game. Of all those available he is the only player capable of matching up on him. I hoped that Reid would be our Buddy stopper, but the poor guy will be lucky to play a game let alone limit Buddy's influence. The best hope we have is for the rest of the team to beat their opponents and limit his supply. With the good form we have shown, there is a very good chance we can win despite Buddy.

This is a list of players I have ordered for Round 1 according to:
NAB Challenge form
Importance to structures/team
Fitness (Injured players left out)

1. Pendlebury
2. Sidebottom
3. Swan
4. Brown
5. Varcoe
6. Adams
7. Witts
8. Cloke
9. Fasolo
10. Greenwood
11. Treloar
12. Langdon
13. Crisp
14. De Goey
15. Gault
16. Moore
17. Blair
18. Sinclair
19. Macaffer
20. Ramsay
21. Frost
22. Williams

EMG
Grundy, Marsh, Toovey, Maynard

No Grundy because he's underdone and no need against Swans, especially at the SCG.
Toovey's lack of NAB form and in fact game time has surprisingly seen him pushed aside before the seasons started.
I'm also sooo happy to see the back of White and pray we don't see him play again.

Structured as follows.

Sinclair ~ Brown ~ Williams
Ramsay ~ Frost ~ Langdon
Sidebottom ~ Adams ~ Pendlebury
Varcoe ~ Cloke ~ Swan
Gault ~ Moore ~ Fasolo

R: Witts ~ Greenwood ~ Treloar

I/C: Crisp ~ Macaffer ~ Blair ~ De Goey

When 100% fit

In: Reid, Elliott
Out: Eventual Injury

The only thing that's annoying me is our lack of a Fasolo/Elliott type left footer in our forward line.
If only we had a Didak.

Frost in his 4th game stifled Buddy's output, but has he played him since? Frost is guaranteed a game without Reid or Goldsack available. Ramsay should get a game ahead of Sinclair. His foot skills are better than Sinclair's and he is the future, whereas Sinclair part of a past we're trying to escape. Maynard, who can at least kick and provide a physical presence, should be tried ahead of Sinclair. That leaves Langdon, Frost, Brown and Williams to complete the defence.

I think that would be very close but I think we will go 1 ruck, probably Witts, Gault in and Langdon will get in somewhere but geez I can't pick for who. Probably Sinclair.

Buddy didn't play against us in 2015.

There are a lot of teams playing a three tall forward line. Sydney will likely be one of them. Considering this, I believe this side to be a tall defender short. I would expect that Marsh will make it in considering Goldsack is injured. That said I do see an issue having two tall defenders who are ordinary users of the footy in Marsh and Frost (in Reids likely absence) and another in Brown whose kicking is working class at best.
