Legitimate question? What would you suggest they do in this circumstance? Because his finger was in a splint, so there's at least deniability. At the worst the AFL fines them. If they just remove him from any club photos, training etc. it becomes obvious, questions are asked, and they likely unwittingly violate the court suppression order. The fine from the AFL is nothing compared to what an organization violating a court order would look like.

I do agree that injury lists are complete bull though. Cam Guthrie vanished for half the year last year, before he even got a mention. We all knew he was a write off, but the club played the game. All clubs do it, and 'TBC' is just another way around that.

This situation feels different though. Legitimately don't know what they could have done.

So the actual strategy is simple:

1) Remove him and say nothing initially. Not a word. You don’t need to game this by “getting in front of it” which I guarantee is the sort of mindset that would’ve been happening at Geelong here. Because it’s how all two-bit PR types work.

2) When you’re asked, the better response is just “XXXX is away from the club at the moment. We are unable to provide any further details at this time. We will seek to answer any further questions if or when we are able.” The end.

You’re not violating a suppression there. You’re not saying anything. Any firestorm or circus or assumption that follows that is either already happening anyway, or it will be very soon.

You really don’t need to lie and add further bullshit to an already very dark situation. It’s just the first instinct of every PR hack in 2025 is to do that, because it’s all they’re trained to do.

I think this situation says more about the accused personally than it does the club.
Lets be clear here - we all want to see this behavior prosecuted with the full force of the law - if parties are found guilty.
But this is not a matter for footy clubs to handle, it is a serious criminal matter.

What did Geelong lie about?

They have done exactly what you have outlined here in strat #1.

All I can think is that Geelong have him on the injury list as Finger - TBC.... which whilst is a tad sus to me, is far from confirmed untrue.
