On the Greg Lynn committal proceedings Crown Prosecutor Mr Dickie said 'It is clear hopefully from the document, and if it's not clear from the document it's clear hopefully from the charges put before the court, that it is alleged of course that the accused acted with murderous intent when he allegedly killed the two victims.'

Just going back through this, Russell ended his half hour radio call at around 6.40pm after they'd set up camp on the Friday and that being the last time he was heard from. A passer-by took a picture of the completely burnt out (looked cold) campsite at 2.00pm the following day. The police seem to think on this documentary that while there was the suggestion the drone might have triggered an argument that night, Russell probably didn't fly it that evening as sunset was at 7.24pm and there was cooking etc before it got pitch black. This is contrary to a worker who told the musterer (not the police) that Russell flew his drone over his camp that night.

The crime occurred either through the night or the following Saturday morning.

Also interesting that not everybody was comfortable with Russell and Carol's open affair. The ham radio club felt compelled to reassure their wives they weren't taking other women away when they were off camping and the Country Women's Association removed Carol from their honours roll.

The Musterer who looked through the windows of Russell's locked car said all the membership/cards from both their purse and wallet were strewn over the floor, he couldn't see any cash, debit or credit cards.

So someone did get into Russell's car and handled their things. Maybe there's prints or he was wearing gloves.

Also, investigators couldn't find any evidence of Russell's boots so he disappeared wearing them it's thought, and wasn't in his sleeping bag when he died.

Things I don’t get are:
1. The musterer, who I read earlier, was camped nearby and reported the drone flying up the creek and hovering over his camp. Did he move camp? Why didn’t he see/hear the tent fire with possible gas bottle explosion?
2. The person who reported the petrol car turning around at abbeyard gate(was it the button man who reported this?), why didn’t that person see/hear fire? That person surely wouldve heard gunshots if there were any? (I live rural, we hear hunters shooting in next valley, heard an incinerator explode 20kms away, car explode 15km away over the years)
3. Why’d he have a trailer on a solo trip? Unnecessary burden on bush tracks!
4. Has it been reported when GL went bush? Maybe he run into RH when he went up earlier in the week

fascinated!!!

Maybe he thought two elderly people would be easier to handle than they were. Too ambitious and he ended up in a fight inside the tent, getting old and sloppy or overconfident maybe.

Israel Keyes picked people off in the forests and also used fire to destroy evidence, he used it after taking two elderly people out of their house and killing them. He got away with that but he too eventually became reckless or lazy and did stupid serial killer things that got him caught.

"This is entertainment for me." - Israel Keyes on his serial murders.

Unsealed Interviews Details Two Lives of Israel Keyes

FBI Press release & Timeline

ISRAEL KEYES has been called by FBI profilers as one of the most methodical and cunning serial killers of modern times.

Israel Keyes should be as well known as Ted Bundy, what he lacked in charm like Bundy he made up for in discipline. He is probably responsible for more than 36 murders, all picked randomly and made admissions to 11 before killing himself in prison. Since his death investigators believe they can tie him to 36. He was so efficient at disposal, most of them have never been found.
The speculation is the Israel Keyes wanted to get caugt in the end.
That he was mentally falling apart when he took the girl in the coffee stall (the closest to his home ever) and that his mental deterioration proceeded from there.
He stalked (specific) victims that he picked off in forests and also lay in wait for others to come along.
The main thing about Keyes was that he didn't have one MO but was totally adaptable.
I just re-read the book on him, the second reading years after the first gave me more perspective.
I really don't think he is comparable to this un.

What's this book called? I love true crime books.

Unless he confesses they probably won't get a conviction for anybody else's disappearance with no bodies but I think Nials Becker, David Prideaux and Conrad Whitlock's family might like to hear from the police that he'd been ruled out as having involvement. It would be on my mind if one of mine vanished in that area.

Warren Meyer went missing as well but that was from Mount Dom Dom.

What brings these into a particular grouping, area ?

What rules out others that were or are missing ?

I wonder why he turned north from the high plains Rd after exiting the Grant area, ending up on the Hotham camera. Assuming he had dumped the trailer contents the way home through Dargo the south would have quickest.

He did try and leave via the Myrtleford gate to begin with I guess, so maybe a just a continuation original plans.

Quicker/more direct to get out to the Hume Hwy and straight down into Melbourne. The way out through Dargo brings you out near Stratford. Its windy and very up and down hill, slow going in a Patrol. Then he has to take the Highway though Traralgon, Pakenham, Melbourne to home.

Grant is actually bugger all of a detour of the Dargo High Plains Rd, maybe 5 minutes tops. He also could have come through a fairly accessible back route that would have gone straight past Grant. Coming from Wonnangatta Valley you can get to an area called Talbotville without much hassles beyond a few river crossings, which are usually pretty low being late Summer. Then it's quite literally 10 mins up a cruisy but steep track to Grant

Police should get a few days of fine weather, light winds finally. Would have been too dangerous with the strong winds yesterday.

Could still take some time to locate anything. I suppose depends on what he has confessed to and if he has given a specific location.

I'd assumed he would have gone across through Talbotville, otherwise the next most direct route is Eaglevale? Too exposed, lots of campers and houses along those flats.

But don't agree from there the quickest way out is via Bright, that's a massive loop to the north and you would save an hour or so going through Dargo. I go across to Crooked River and Dargo via Traralgon a few times year and it's a very easy drive, even if I do take my 2000 Hilux.
Conversely if I'm going to to Bright/Wandi/Buckland it's straight up the Hume.

Edit: unless your thinking Craigieburn instead of Carolie Springs? Which I tend to do! Which I can see as making more sense.

The drone owned by Russell Hill remains a key part of the murdered campers investigation.
The Sunday Herald Sun can reveal extensive bushland searches and warrants at Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn’s home in Melbourne’s west have not turned up Mr Hill’s DJI Mavic drone.
It has emerged that Mr Hill was flying the drone above his isolated Wonnangatta Valley campsite in the hours before he and Carol Clay were murdered.
A bushland worker saw the elderly pair at the site on March 20, last year – believed to be the day they were killed.
The man said Mr Hill’s drone flew above campsites in the area just before nightfall.

The flight records of the missing drone have never been recovered but Missing Persons Squad detectives remain interested in finding the device.
It’s been a long-held theory that Mr Hill, 74, and Ms Clay, 73, met with foul play following an altercation at the campsite.
The witness saw a man with a blue Nissan Patrol and trailer near the Wonnangatta campsite as early as Wednesday, March 18.
He said the man was odd and that he stopped to ask for advice on the best campsites. It is not known if the man was Mr Lynn.

The search for the remains of Mr Hill and Ms Clay will intensify on Monday, as teams of specialist police and emergency personnel search an area close to Dargo, about two hours drive southeast of Wonnangatta.
The search centres on the Grant Historic Area, a gold mining district with a few landmarks, including marked and unmarked graves.
The region is surrounded by dense bush, poorly maintained tracks and dead ends.
It was described by locals as a very tricky and isolated part of the high country.
A crime scene guard remained at the entrance of the search area on Saturday.
It will be crucial for police to preserve the area until the major search begins on Monday.

Revelations of a crime scene were made public on Friday evening as police announced Mr Lynn had been charged with the campers’ murders.
He was arrested after Special Operations Group officers surrounded him at a remote campsite in Arbuckle Junction, also in the alpine region.
The arrest was brought forward due to concerns over his mental state.

In Victoria drones may not be operated in any area managed by Parks Victoria (including National Parks, State Parks, Crown Land Reserves, Port Phillip and Western Port, Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers and a variety of Metropolitan Parks) without being or engaging a fully licensed pilot and CASA-certified operator. The doco I watched on this guy noted that he was so well planned and disciplined - that he even planted "kill kits" randomly all over the country; that he could/would use years later to execute his kills ....

Almost everywhere, hardly any point owning one.

So not legal where Hill flying it. Massive chance this was the trigger as most have suspected. Could be buried with the couple.

Finding the drone & bodies with perps DNA would be "case closed". No need for the trailer then.

Pings cant be received where there is no reception. Theres a chance perp's phone was using maps in offline mode and that saved breadcrumbs from his movements that night which were automatically uploaded to his google acct upon reaching mobile phone internet reception. Police subsequently retrieved data from it, bit like the Theo Hayez case where they guessed his google password and were able to recover his movements on the night of his disappearance.
I'm pretty sure that's how the cops caught Judy Moran. From memory the phone was off but still communicating with base stations.
