Sad way to end a career. Sounds like a slam dunk case on the face of it. Always liked crowls, doesnt deserve to be remembered for this, and hopefully wont be.

Slam dunk case is probably correct. The AFL really has no avenue here. If Crowley is found guilty they'd have to apply the same penalty as Saad... Unfortunately for you guys it's likely the end of the road for him.

Dumb from Crowls. Maybe an innocent mistake, but in this climate you've got to be a little more switched on than that.

Worst case scenario is end of the road for him, which really would be a shame for him to go out on these terms after turning his career around.

Club has handled this one really well so far, too

a and b sample of a p sample .. the docckers thought it was an iq test crowley failed not a drug test thats why this is so long in coming out

I feel dirty by doing this because I suspect I'm doing the West Coast board a favour here.

Patience isn't high today and those who can't even read the thread title aren't going to get any leeway.

I hate Asada! Give us back our game! I just don't care unless a player is shown to actually take performance enhancing drugs! Media will drive everyone insane over the next few weeks;(

Very interesting interview on SEN with former ASADA CEO on Crowls's case and why it has taken so long for Crowls to have his day in court, from the October infraction notice. Have a listen: . If link isn't here, visit the SEN website.

Thanks for flagging the SEN coverage Gil.

Richard Ings provides some clarity in explaining that Crowley has tested positive to a "Specified substance" which is most commonly found in medications. These are typically only banned on match day and are easy to take inadvertently such as cough and cold type medications. While it would be a lower category case which doesn't trigger an automatic suspension, he makes the point that Saed similarly got nailed for a 'specified substance' (18 month ban) because he displayed a lack of care and a significant fault.

?

With the known facts, it looks like he has made a stupid mistake and will pay a high price.
I'm trying to track down footage I recollect of Crowley appearing very emotional at the end of a game last year - anyone remember the game?

Some are only banned on match day but perfectly legal to take during the week
the underlying principal of why it's illegal still sounds ridiculous though. what's the difference between a guy taking a pain killer and a guy who gets jabbed and can't feel his knee/shoulder/ankle but is allowed to play?

There's an ingredient in the pain killer that's illegal for athletes to have in their system.

Yeah but why is it illegal? According to what Dr. Larkins was saying, it's illegal because they don't want players playing while they're injured because it could ultimately be bad for the players long-term well-being.

Welcome to st kildas world. Like you guys I have two problems with this:
1) saad an Crowley are lazy dopers. They are low hanging fruit on the smaller scale. Yet they are easier to punish and from what we are seeing with cronulla receive larger penalties. Doesn't seem just that a small offence by a lazy dumb individual gets a harsher penalty than organised doping which is for an advantage
2) I don't understand why pain killers are banned if there are forms used on game day.

The key question in the presser I thought was asked by basil. Did he get the pill using a prescription prescribed to him from a doctor or someone else?

I also wouldn't rule out recreational use. Codeine cough mixture for example is often used in a drink if you're into that thing

Saad and I suspect also Crowley are just stupid. Everyone knows you should be checking stuff like that. Saad was warned three times to not use it anymore. Just don't get why these athletes would risk the coin and lifestyle

I dont think you have to worry about him being remembered for this. He has quite a few fans myself included.

I hope everything works out I dont think anyone is pleased by this news and we dont feel the sport is any cleaner or safer because of this.

Good luck with it all I hope my comments dont offend because of my team. That was not my intention.
Cheers

Other forms of strong pain killers are perfectly legal so that reason sounds like bullshit

Feel bad for Crowley, obviously not intentional or performance enhancing by the sounds of it.

lets hope this does not turn into the circus like the Essendon crisis has.

Have really enjoyed Crowley plying his trade, and who knows what the future holds. But it is irresponsible of him to have sourced meds from outside the usual channels, and by doing so he has acted very unprofessionally. It has some impact on a few things, including our chances for this season, and for that I am pretty pissed off tbh. There really is no excuse.

The debate about should painkillers be banned, or what about recreational drugs blah blah is another story. The protocol is clear, and should be followed. He will cop his whack, and I suspect it will be career ending. That is a real shame.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but because this was made public does that mean its his 3rd strike? I thought if it was 1 or 2 it was anonymous? Not trying to stir the pot just legitimately want to know.

*Do you think if Crowley played for a Victorian team there is no way a provisional suspension could have been kept a secret from the media?
*Who plays the close checking tagging role now?
*In the GWS round 17 game do Freo fans remember how Crowley played? Was he hampered by injury before/during that game?
