Ryan O'Keefe set to fly the nest

September 29, 2008 05:45pm

STAR forward Ryan O'Keefe is set to leave the Swans after telling the club he wants to return home to Victoria. O'Keefe's recently appointed manager Tom Petroro confirmed to Channel 10 today that O'Keefe broke the news to the club in recent days.

A former All-Australian, O'Keefe is out of contract. The Swans have offered the 28-year-old a three-year deal, but he hasn't accepted it.

It is believed that he has given the Swans a list of three or four clubs that he would prefer to be traded to.

Carlton and Collingwood said they would be interested in pursuing a trade for the player.

Would Hawthorn be interested in a 28 yo forward?

We would never give him a 3 year contract. In fact any club that does will be rather stupid and not learnt anything as to me 28 is about the age you look at retiring players.

He a is great player no doubt.

Dont know how we would possibly fit him in, Buddy and Roughie are set for 10 years, as is Rioli and Ossie for small forwards, I could only see him coming in for Willo.

Personally I would prefer Willo just becoz we would have to give up a fair bit to get ROK. According to the Herald Sun Pelchin and Co are still set on aggressively going after a key defender.

But where is Mitch Thorp and Dowler in all this?????

Re: Do you want o'keefe??

Would fit straight into anyside, but I'm happy with our forward line. He is worth at least pick 17 + one other young fringe player, like Dowler or Boyle.

I think Western Bulldogs or Richmond will fight each other very hard for him, Saints to take a potshot aswel.

Dont think we would be willing to offer a lot for a 28yr old.

I'd continue to back our judgement in drafting the right youth to keep our side balanced for the future.

I'd like him at the club but theres NO CHANCE he'd end up at Hawthorn considering other clubs ability to offer more than us to Sydney, maybe Taylor and a 3rd Rounder would be the best we could offer and I doubt they'd take that.

He is a very good player no doubt about that unlucky to not be All Australian this year but he simply is not needed. Buddy, Roughead, Williams, Rioli, Osborne, Dew and Thorp and Dowler in waiting.

He is also 28 years old and Sydney would demand our 1st round pick at the very least. Which all completely contradicts the young drafting model that got us our 10th flag.

He's worth a lot less than what the Doggies gave to get Acker

Please lets not even mention his name in regard to the Hawks. Weve got better quality chomping at the bit waiting in the 2nds. Players that havent even gotten their chance to turn it on yet.
Dew was an exception to our recruiting model, but a very known quantity to Clarko. He fit a definite requirement. Part of the attrcation too was that he cost us nothing in terms of picks, or pocket money. What would ROK be bringing us?

What kind of guy is he anyhow? I see a stinking rat deserting the sinking ship that is Sydney. Hope he resigns with them, bleeding them for extra moolah, then goes to the bottom with the rest of those forgetables.

Something really rotten about the place and the way the place is headed (please extend Barrys contract again you tools!). There won't be any chance of a 2nd team playing out of Sydney at this rate, it'll be the AFL bucket brigade bailing Sydney out of the red again.

Would be a great addition to the club. Many time all Australian and would fit perfectly into the hard running, hard at the contest brand of football that Clarko has developed.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves Hawk supporters and start suggesting that we do not need absolute gune players on our list. If he were to suggest that he would like to be at our club we should definitely consider him. Anyone that begins to suggest that Thorp or Dowler are in any way a similar option need to have a good hard look at themselves.

Having said that, we need to assess and consider our line up, particuarly our Key position backman and see what is available in the marketplace. Croad is expected to be out of action for 4 months with a mangled foot so will miss all preseason which will hurt, he needs some assistance.

The above comment proves you are an idiot! Last time I looked we had no All Australian players in the 2nds!

Hes obviously quality but we will struggle firstly to prize him away and secondly maintain our list in the coming years.

Don't we have several key players out of contract next season and season following, just something to take into consideration.

Top player. Probably one of the harder match ups at the HFF position in the AFL. Is a leader, can win his own football, and has a great set of hands. Unfortunatly he is 28, and there is no need to top up a team thats had premiership glory the year before is there?

The hardest task for scouts/staff management is not rebuilding a list from scratch but its keeping a healthy ammount of talented youth developing with later draft picks without jeopardising (sp?) the success of the club.
