There you go Itsmyshow, this is why highbrow is no good for your team. Confusing for some

Happy Thursday (aka manangatang's fourth favourite day of the week)! I know that I'm not officially part of this thread, but I was invited here to do a job* and by golly, I'm gonna do it. Is everyone ready? It's past 10am, but that doesn't matter, as any time of the day is the perfect time for ...

TOP TEN THURSDAY!

This most-loved tradition is a simple one. Each Thursday in the match thread, a theme is posted on at 10am(ish) and than anyone that wants to join in lists their top ten according to the theme. Previous themes have included Top Ten Fictional Police Officers, Top Ten Cars and Top Ten , but this week the theme is ... TOP TEN COVERS.

It could be someone making a terrible song great (e.g. Johnny Cash's take on "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails) or maybe just giving a bonafide classic some new life like The White Stripes doing "Jolene" by Dolly Parton. It could be a Triple J Like A Version (I've heard there's a really good one of Jay Z's 99 Problems by some local indie band floating around out there somewhere ;)) or maybe a banging remix like Fatboy Slim's mix of Cornershop's "Brimful Of Asha" that takes it to another level. You might even go for a song that you didn't initially realise was actually a cover - The Clash's "I Fought The Law" is always my go-to for that. It doesn't matter - it's YOUR top ten!

There aren't any rules for Top Ten Thursday except that your list needs to have ten entries (no more, no less). Feel free to order them from 1-10 if you like (or don't), and while explanations aren't necessary, they're definitely encouraged. Of course, ripping apart other nominations is allowed too**.

* Distract the Bombers from the fact that they're playing the Hawks.
** Mostly from me.
Thanks to everyone that got involved with TOP TEN THURSDAY! For what it's worth, here is my list of Top Ten Covers (that are tickling me today ... the list might be very different next week):
  • Antony & The Johnsons "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" - I already posted the link earlier in the thread, but this is a hauntingly beautiful version of this song and every time I listen to it, I actually feel like I'm somewhere in the vicinity of heaven. Oh my word.
  • The Clash "I Fought The Law" - It still blows my mind that this is a cover as it's such a perfect Clash song, both in the music and the lyrics. Anyways, as soon as that drum intro starts, I'm totally hooked.
  • Cake "I Will Survive" - This is one of those covers that simultaneously respects the original but completely makes it their own. The laid-back drawl of John McCrea suits the passionate indifference of the song perfectly, but it's the arrangement of the funky bass lines over scratchy acoustic guitar and the late-entering trumpet that makes this so brilliant.
  • Scary Pockets "MMMbop" - It might be recency bias only discovering this a couple of months ago, but this Jackson 5-esque take on a 90s classic guilty pleasure shouldn't really work as well as it does. Also, if you haven't fallen in love with Lucy Schwartz by the end, you should probably check your pulse, as you may already be dead.
  • Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah" - It's been completely done to death in almost any emotionally heavy scene in movies/TV as well as being destroyed by countless talent show contestants, but it's still an incredible rendition. The lyrics are so evocative and the melody is so singable, but no-one else on earth can deliver it even close to what Jeff Buckley did. And don't discount his guitar-playing either - simply immaculate.
  • Jeremy Sole "Golden Years" - This is a remix that re-recorded everything except for Bowie's original vocals. Apparently he wanted the feel of a Carribbean band playing an American funk cover and it works so damn well. Maybe even better than the original? I'm undecided, which is crazy, because I love the actual Bowie version!
  • Ryan Adams "Back In Your Head" - This has been taken down from Spotify by Tegan & Sara (due to their disgust at Ryan Adam's at-best-sleazy-at-worst-criminal behaviour), but it's still up on Youtube thankfully. It turns what is THE perfect indie-pop song into something more akin to a Bruce Springsteen stadium rock vibe. Killer!
  • Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra "Hey Ya" - A smoky jazz-club instrumental version of the Outkast classic? DAMN!
  • The Flying Lizards "Money" - I've always loved how completely munted this cover is. It's so perfectly weird and purposefully off-putting and makes me want to do weird jerky dance moves all around the lounge room with my equally strange 3yo daughter.
  • Johnny Cash "Hurt" - I probably could've chosen a dozen songs from the Johnny Cash American Recordings (Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" and The Beatles' "In My Life" are perfect examples), but there is something so emotionally arresting about his version of this song. Apparently Trent Reznor loves it so much, this is the version he plays in Nine Inch Nails concerts now!

And if anyone is interested, PM me and I'll send you a cover of an REM classic that my band has been working on (that may or may not squeeze into your Top Ten). But for now, I'll bow out of this thread as gracefully as my ageing body will allow. I'd say good luck to either the Bombers/Hawks, but I actually don't care.

Thanks Brother, need to replenish the Keg so am 100% on the good stuff during this lockdown. 10pm zoom meetings with India go much better when you have a few Diplimatico's to accompany you.

its funny, you can only say pardon me a few times before it gets awkward, then you just have to guess what it is you are being made accountable for, I now just wait for the minutes to come out to figure out what went on most of the time.

Hang in there mate. Hopefully people start listening and do what they are told for 5 minutes so we can get back on with our lives again.

Not holding my breath though, reckon this will become the new normal for a couple of years.

Hope everyone has a support network in place to help when times get tough. I am only a PM away if anyone needs to vent or chat. You campaigners on BF have helped keep me (relatively) sane over the last 12 months or so, happy to offer the same support to anyone in need.
