You know how the saying goes: another round, another Old Boys mistake.

You may have seen that the Old Boys recently added the player fumbler to their squad:





I believe that there has been a fair bit of discussion around this player, but let's just look at this move in isolation.

The player fumbler was delisted by Dragons FFC on Sunday night, in a very charitable move, but it seems that the Old Boys have been a little too eager here.

Let's look at the rules around player free agency (in-season):



I believe that it is very clear that the player must fill out a form in the sign up thread prior to signing up to their next club, and although fumbler did fill out a form in the sign up thread last week, he was not a free agent at the time and therefore the application was invalid. A new post was required once he was made a free agent.

Ophidian Old Boys have been penalised for an error under 4D for incorrect signing of an in-season free agent. TBH even I can't find a justification to throw out this one, there wasn't even an obscure precedent.

In-Season

After the squad submission deadline, listed players are contracted to their club. However, any players that were delisted by the club's voluntary action during the season (that were on the original squad) can be signed as a delisted free agent by any other club (including the original club).

The player must enter the team sign up thread and the same process applies as if they were a new or returning player to the Sweet FA.

Once a player has moved clubs within the season through In-Season Free Agency, they may not move clubs again until the following season through any means.

New/Returning Players

The official process for signing players during the season under the new/returning category is that a player who posts an intention to join the league, by posting in the signup thread during a season, will be required to complete the Application form as below:

Even if we were to use the technicality argument, the purpose of the 24-hour cooling period is to allow all clubs the opportunity to bid, and 24-hours never elapsed between fumbler's delisting from the Dragons and signing with Old Boys.

6B) Minor Offence

The following list of offences will result in a Strike under a 'Three-Strike Policy'. Which is outlined below:

1. Official Warning
2. 1-game suspension to the captain, if there are multiple captains at a club, the captain of the offending club will be randomly selected for suspension.
3. 2 point deduction, plus a 2-game suspension for the captain (if there are multiple captains at a club, the captain of the offending club will be randomly selected for suspension)

• Incorrect player signing as per 4C and 4D

The Committee has voted by a vote of 8-4 to charge and find guilty the Ophidian Old Boys under 6A for the major offence of an invalid initial squad submission due to containing invalid players.

SEC [6]. PENALTIES

The Administrator shall apply the following penalties for breaches of the Rules under Sections 4 and 5 as above.

6A) Major Offence

The following list of offences will result in a 4 point plus a 2-game suspension for the captain (if there are multiple captains at a club, the captain of the offending club will be randomly selected for suspension) in league standings:

• Failing to submit a valid initial squad in the squad submission thread by deadline as per 4A

The wording of 4A has been amended via 3C.

SEC [4]. SQUAD MANAGEMENT/PLAYER MOVEMENT

4A) Initial Squad Submission

A valid player list or 'squad' must be submitted by a representative of each team prior to the deadline set by the administration in the nominated squad submission thread.

A valid squad submission post contains:

• a list of minimum 22 players and maximum 30 players, all of whom have active Bigfooty Accounts that are not aliases, and have been signed or retained through legitimate means - either rolled over from the previous season or signed correctly via 4D in the off-season.
• an identifying characteristic of the team other than the poster.

If a player changes their BigFooty username during the season, both the team sheets and squad submission thread must continue to use the original username at squad submission deadline for the remainder of the season. The simulation output will continue to list their original name.


This means an additional 4-point deduction and 2-game suspension for the captain. cc: Falconista

Summary of Offences of the Ophidian Old Boys

~ Minor Offence - incorrect player signing under 4D - for TJohn failing to verify with public post before
~ Minor Offence - incorrect player signing under 4D - for incorrectly signing fumbler without proper permission from the player
~ Minor Offence - naming an ineligible player under 5B - naming Bonz who had been ineligible from a SFA related infraction in the grand final
~ Minor Offence - incorrect squad changes under 4B - naming fumbler as an out in the squad list despite not being named in the final squad of the previous season
~ Minor Offence - incorrect player signing under 4D - for incorrect in-season signing of fumbler
~ Major Offence - failure to submit a valid initial squad under 4A - as the initial squad contained invalid players fumbler and TJohn

Corrective actions to align back with rules:

• fumbler should be removed from the OUTs in the squad changes
• fumbler should repost the sign-up form with OOB listed as preferred team at least 24 hours prior to the team sheet deadline if he were to be named
• Bonz to miss Round 2

No further action required on TJohn as it is not reasonable to deregister and re-sign him given he is obviously a OOB player having actively participated in the match thread.

Final outcome: 6-point deduction + 6 game penalty for the captain
