And so it came to pass that on Day 8 of his self-isolation pebblesofsand finally met his match. Himself.

It wasn't the 2 volumes of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits he forced himself to listen to as they were next up in the chronological sequence he had proscribed.

Sure 'John Wesley Harding' wasn't a great album, particularly after some rippers, but at least it had "All Along The Watchtower". No, that wasn't it.

Nor was it due to daylight savings. In fact that gave him extra time.

In the end the great man succumbed to his own challenge and simply found something better to do with his time.

You ok mate?

I knew you'd call me out.

Not to make you feel bad but or anything but I've been away for a couple of days checking up on my 94 yo father who is back from hospital after breaking a couple of ribs.

Well that's what I told the policeman anyway!!!

He's actually been out of of hospital for a couple of weeks.

Back to Bob tomorrow - 3 albums.

Nah he's fine - he's as bullet proof as you could expect from a 94 yo. Hospital admission would read have something like

"Patient admitted at 10.00PM after a fall at Bowls Club following personal success in the Grand Final. Patient in very good spirits, vital signs all good - elevated alcohol reading!!!

Album No 8 Studio John Wesley Harding

Released 27 December 1967

Some folks bemoan Dylan going electric on "Bringing it all back Home" but this album see's him back to his folk roots. Low key but I really like this album. Best known for the producing the song "All along the Watchtower" which is probably best known for being covered rather than the Dylan original. Title track and others like "As I went Out this Morning" and "I'll be you Baby Tonight" round out another great album. 9 out of 10

While Hendrix's version is a classic in its own right ( its a true "cover" in that it completely reinterprets the original song) I still love the original version - its a bit like New York New York by Sinatra - a song structure that perfectly suits the tone and delivery of the performer.

B***er it - lets hear both

Album No 9 Studio Nashville Skyline

Released 9 April 1969

Ahhh Bob - seven years into his career this album provides the first real glimpse of all the changes that will lay ahead.

Not as lyrically profound as previous albums but this foray into country music shows Dylan's diversity. Any number of great songs including Lay Lady Lay, Tonight I'll be Staying Here With You and Girl from the North Country (the duet with Johhny Cash). 8 out of 10

I had wanted to play Peggy Day but can't find a copy of the original so here's "To Be Alone With You" which sums up this great "country" album

Album No 10 Self Portrait

Released June 8, 1970

1586313844072.png

Following on from country feel of Nashville Skyline, brings out this double album comprising traditional songs, covers, instrumentals, live recordings of unreleased songs and few newly penned songs by Dylan himself.

The general consensus was that Dylan was sick of being viewed as the voice of the protest generation when he just wanted to just play music so he threw together this album and let the producer run riot adding whatever overdubs he felt like.

I've never really heard the original before and there's lots of good stuff and some crap (including a cover of Simon and Garfunkels - The Boxer - wtf!!!). The live recordings from the Isle of Wight concert sound including Quin the Eskimo and Like A Rolling Stone are rough as but great.

The album was re-released in the Bootleg series as Another Self Portrait and it sounds a lot better because its stripped back to the traditional basics.

Not so great - 6 out of 10

Picked this one because its closest to the country roots Dylan was wanting to play at this stage of his career.
