Unofficial Preview Saints Geelong R2

Going into the season the Cats game looked like the winnable one of the first two. They've come off a good win but it was at their home ground and against a Freo side that looked abysmal.

The season is still in its infancy, plenty to find out yet.
Even though we are unlikely to win, I do think we will play a lot better against Geelong. We always seem to. And being at Marvel instead of a ground we struggle at full strength at

Exactly. Imagine of Hawthorn gave up after being 0-5 last year. So much more football to be played.

Move Caminiti back in addition to Cordy and Wilkie, then Wilkie can play on Cameron. Stick with Boyd one more week.

Defenders: Wilkie, Cordy, Caminiti, Webster, Sinclair, NWM, Hastie
Forwards: Marshall, Owens, Butler, Hall, Higgins, Keeler, Wood
Midfielders: Boyd, Macrae, Steele, Wilson, Windhager, Garcia, Clark, Hill, Byrnes (sub)

In: Owens, Butler, Keeler
Out: Jones, Schoenmakers, O'Connell

The season is a dead rubber already. This game feels like just going through the motions.

Thanks but no thanks to List management team sending Membrey to Collingwood to win a cup.

Saints meanwhile worry about having no forwards for the short term.

Geelong only play 2 traditional talls - Henry is a third tall and is similar to Membrey in that he plays taller then he is.

I would try:

Wilkie Cameron
Caminiti Neale

Cordy up forward with Marshall and Owens.

Jones/Clark and Byrnes dropped for Owens and Stocker.

Only other change I’d consider - Irish dropped potentially for… Collard. (But that’s only because he kicked 2 in the magoos. Not sure if he actually played well enough to deserve a call up) - otherwise I’d consider Boxshall.

He's gotta be an upgrade on Cordy, at least in the backline.

For Cordy to play as many games as he has, he is the luckiest bloke in AFL history. IMO he is the worst back up full back in the competition, strangely he offers more at FF when played there. But the reality is he shouldnt be on our list and we should have found at least one replacement for Battle/Howard.

Out: Byrnes, Marshall, Jones, O’Connell
In: Stocker, Keeler, Owens, Boxshall

Move Wood back to the wing, we need him dropping back to help the defense, severely underrated aspect of his game. Put Cordy forward and Hammer back. Cordy actually leads and has a great set shot.

Webster Caminiti Wilkie
Sinclair Schoenmaker NWM
Wilson Steele Wood
Hall Owens Garcia
Keeler Cordy Higgins
Boyd Macrae Clark

Stocker Windhager Hastie Hill

Boxshall

Don't mind these ins and outs. Irish had a taste but looked all at sea. Probably needs a bit more development in the VFL but think long term he makes it. Schoenmaker far from our worst and keeps his place. Likewise Boyd with Marshall playing primarily as a forward until fully fit. Have noticed a few asking about Heath. IMO he is miles off AFL quality so Marshall at 80% and Boyd are better options. Would be happy to see Keeler replace Camineti. Keeler looks like a natural footballer and has all the tools. But expect Caminiti will be retained due to the dearth of big man stocks. He looks lost as a forward and needs to play in defence if at all. Boxshall deserves a run and for mine Byrnes and/or Jones make way. Bigger bodied Stocker and Owens to provide a bit more grunt. Any inside knowledge on Kings potential return? I guess until he or Sharman return there is no option but to (reluctantly) play Cordy.

One match in and the season has already been written off by some; that’s just crazy. Long way to go yet.

Reality is we’re a middle six team dealing with injuries to six or seven players that are in our best 22. We don’t have the list to cover those injuries and still be competitive against good teams. Even with our best 22, we’re in strife against strong midfields. Been that way for years.

As for the weekend, Owens should be picked. Caminiti should play in defence. I’d go with Stocker and McLennan for Schoenmaker and Hastie. Clark to come in for O’Connell and Wood back to the wing. If they want to try the two ruck strategy again then so be it but Marshall ultimately needs to get back in the midfield as he helps a lot with clearances.

Webster Wilkie Stocker
NWM Caminiti Sinclair
Wood Clark Hill
Wilson Owens Garcia
Higgins Marshall Hall

Boyd Steele Macrae

Windhager McLennan Jones Byrnes

Take your pick for most of the bench and sub. I’d rather go a bit smaller and quicker to try to exploit Geelong with run. They’re too good in the air. Probably just too good everywhere.

We can maybe get away with Boyd against Geelong, as ruck ain't their strong suit. Also, they're not a clearance team.

I'd like to see Stocker in for some defensive solidity.

If Owens comes in, it can't be for a tall, but in addition.
If we ruck Boyd against SDK he'll get absolutely torn a new one around the ground and SDK will just be an extra in their defence every time we try to go forward

Equally, its also Boyd's chance to get on top in hitouts and give our mids first use - Steele will have no excuse to stink it up again

7 days ago Collingwood were too old, too slow, could no longer run out a game and with no future. Membrey couldn’t get a kick. Now they are on a premiership track?

Maybe there is a lesson in there for everyone already doomsdaying the next 6 months.
I was still pretty bullish on them given that an AA half back was coming in the next week. Anyway, Pies only play well at the MCG.

Who’s the most high profile player coming in the next few weeks? King…. Pffft.

I really hope travaglia plays. Out of the first 17 draft picks (upto murphy reid), he's the only one who wasn't injured and didnt play. I know it doesn't mean anything but seeing all the rookies for the other teams last round 1 makes me eager to see him in action too.

Can't be too harsh on our backline last week, considering the non-existent midfield and half forward defensive effort. The Crows just walked the ball down the field with ease and there was just too much pressure on our backs.
I wouldn't change anything for the Geelong match, though I think Caminiti and Marshall didn't look right to me and may need to bring Keeler in at least.
Just give the more experienced players a kick up the backside and tell them to show more leadership.

I, for one, am incredible excited to read the injury report today to see majority, if not all, players on that list have the same return time as the week before. I will put my life savings on King being 1-3 weeks again.
Even worse, 2-3 😂

I think realistically, reading between the lines, we won't see King until this Adelaide stint is over (round 6).

What I'd like to see

Out: Marshall (not ready), Byrnes, Cordy, Jones
In: Keeler, Owens, Boxshall, Stocker

B: Webster, Wilkie, Schoenmaker
HB: Nas, Caminiti, Sinclair
C: Hill, Steele, Wilson
HF: Hall, Wood, Garcia
F: Higgins, Keeler, Owens

Foll: Boyd, LaCrae, Windhager
Int: Boxshall, Stocker, Clark, O'Connell
Sub: Hastie

What I think we'll get:

Out: O'Connell, Hastie
In: Owens, Stocker

B: Webster, Cordy, Schoenmaker
HB: Nas, Wilkie, Stocker
C: Hill, Steele, Wilson
HF: Hall, Caminiti, Owens
F: Higgins, Marshall, Wood

Foll: Boyd, Macray, Sinclair
Int: Garcia, Byrnes, Windhager, Clark
Sub: Jones
I don’t see how we can possibly roll in with the same backline. Geelong only play two real keys + Dangerfield and Henry, hopefully we can get away with Wilkie and Cordy + Webster and Stocker. Wood can go back and help out if needed. Henry has been building slowly back and should be fit.

My team
OUT: Schoenmaker, O’Connell, Caminiti
IN: Owens, Stocker, Henry

F: Owens, Marshall, Higgins
HF: Hall, Wood, Hill
C: Wilson, Steele, Windhager
HB: Sinclair, Wilkie, NWM,
B: Stocker, Cordy, Webster
Foll: Boyd, Macrae, Garcia
Bench: Byrnes, Clark, Hastie, Henry
Sub: Jones
