Re: Salary cap and list mgmt problems - Good luck Walshy!

We're always paying close to limit aren't we ? Don't we have to pay about 90 something percent no matter what ?

All teams used to have to spend 92.5, now I think it's 95% of the cap.

92.5 percent is minimum cap. Its a joke Melbourne and Port's players get paid 8 million between them...
I'm pretty sure it went up to 95% under the new agreement that commenced this year.

The middle rung guys around 300k are the ones who cop it and either have to accept unders (just like the big wage earners do by staying put) or go elsewhere.
They have no hand as superstars and young potential superstars will always take precedence.

That's why we saw Toovs have problems last year.

These role playing types are invaluable yet the easiest to replace cheaply.

We might get to the stage where hard calls need to be made on Wellingham/O'Brien types who have currency but arent superstars in deals for draft picks

The other thing besides looking at the revenue side (wages/cap) is to look at expenditure. If the club invested in a number of houses, they could put up a series of young players there. Could save a player 12 grand a player per year right there. Also see if can get sponsorship deal with supermarkets who provide players with food. Could save 8k p.a. too.

If you could save 20k p.a. per player X 6 players, that's a saving of 120k which is okay. Could offer them a package where they get 20k less in wage but save it in expenditure.

Just doing things so players don't have to dip their hands in their pockets too often. That plus very structured post footy career development will help with retention.

Pretty sure that's not allowed...

Possibly. But the point is the club might need to get creative, giving players investment portfolio, financial planning advice, hook them into business projects, media courses etc.

The floor is acedemic. If the wage bill for 2012 wasn't right tothe limit we would have brough some 2013 salaries forward. We would pay the cap limit every year. I doubt at the end of 2010 with the exits we had that we were not front loading and that is given we already had a Ball front loading in 2010 (and 2011) to get him via the draft.

Don't know how it is this year but pies have been pretty strict over last few years about not backending contracts. Causes big headaches down the track. They have frontended a lot though which is a good thing, if you have the cash pay the full cap that year and get relief next year. ASA's are a big key these days and don't think we have used it to full extent in the past. Getting on top of this will help. FWIW my gut feeling is we won't lose anyone we really want to keep, just feel like there are too many quality people involved in the process to let that happen.

yeah thats right - i had a play with it and it really bites you when you have a group of good kids coming through who need more money. I think you could do for one or two 'franchise' players but you would be flirting with danger to do more than that.

Thinking more laterally, I think the club could profit from trying to set up players in lucrative post football careers. Need to expand player welfare role into a swanky CES.

I agree totally and I think Eddie has been concerned about player-welfare post career for a long time.
