Perhaps something like the above?

Our list probably would not fit the average given the stage of development we are at. The recent trade-ins probably get a little premium on their salaries too which over-weights our mid-high salary range, and we are over-weight in the cheapie stakes as well.

* unlikely to be on the list next year, which if my guestimate is assumed, frees up $1,500,000 for the war chest. I think/hope Mundy goes around one more time.

We will have some of the draftees jumping up the salary tree, but apart from Brayshaw and Cerra I wouldn't expect anything crazy as an increase.

That tallies to - unless my fat fingers are too fat for the calculator ...
Min : $12,460,000
Med : $14,330,000
Max : $16,200,000

I would suggest:

Fyfe $1m+.
Hogan and Lobb correct.
Mundy - one (maybe two) levels lower.
McCarthy - no way $600k+.
S Hill and Hamling correct.
Walters - one level lower.
B Hill, Wilson and Sandi correct.
Conca - one level lower.
Pearce - probably correct.
Matera, Langdon, Ryan and Tabs - one level lower.
Bennell - one year extension in August 2018, well below $400k.
Colyer - one level lower.
The rest look about right.

Bennell Taberner Matera
Lobb Hogan Walters

Sandilands Fyfe Mundy

McCarthy Langdon Colyer Darcy

Our richest 22 is missing Switkowski, Schultz, Brayshaw, Cerra, Duman, Hughes

So - the question remains - Freo clearly have the cash to chase after Coniglio. Theoretically do we have a surplus that would help us land two big fishes in the off season? Other than Fyfe and perhaps Hogan - I can't see many players taking up a lot of the cap.

Sorry for the "pointless post" but I'm just curious of others thoughts.

I have to be honest, I don't really want to go hard at a big fish. I think it creates problems for our emerging stock of home grown fish down the line. I prefer the Geelong model of a structured pay scale to one where you parachute in a talented player based largely on your ability to outbid the pack. Recently I think we have been operating in line with this mode, while perhaps exploiting clubs experiencing salary squeeze.

I also think that we have terrific potential within the list to expect improved midfield performance. Clearly we will take a hit when Mundy retires, but SHill and Blakely add significant weight to our midfield, and the future development potential our young developing mids is palpable (plus Valente, North and Sturt are yet to debut, but will have significant impact imo).

I am keener for us to attract;
  • a performing small-medium forward/midfielder at $4-550K
  • a performing mature first ruck at $5-600K
Not exactly sure about those figures, but they are meant to reflect "market value" for position.
