He may also have realised the degree of his injury and decided that he'd make the most of his last game for the year. His kind of courage is something that a lot of our big name players need to look at and use as an example rather than just being show ponies. Where have all the Rick kennedy's and Danny Southerns gone who would play with only one leg, we seem to now have a team made up of quite a few soccer players who are scared of getting their hand dirty.

^ This is to be expected though right? in your first game for the year in a pressure cooker situation? Not to mention the fact that it was probably only his 5th game ever or something. Ward first game back - disposal was average also. Not to mention a few who have played nearly every game this year ;)
Personally I love the kid .

I think he is a really good player. IMO his problem is that there are a lot of similar type players in our side. So it is hard for him competing for spots to get a game. His situation reminds me a little bit of Prismall when he was at Geelong.

I thought his effort last night was really courageous full marks to him for playing. I wouldn't mark him down for any disposal errors. He has only played a handful of games and it is a huge increase in tempo from the VFL. You would really need a player to play a lot more games(and in sequence) before you can adequately judge them.

There was an article a couple of days ago about Sam Reid(and Carltons Josh Donaldson) being a type 1 diabetic. Amazing to think that he lost 15kg in two weeks. That is extraordinary.

If it is managed right it should not stand in the way of Sam and an elite playing career

Richmond great rover Dale Weightman was also an insulin dependent diabetic who had a career spanning over 250 games including a premiership.

Talking about weight loss , with another condition "glandular fever" just after he started with the club, I think Ryan Hargrave got down to 59 kilo's at one stage ..and that is very light considering he is about 188cm tall

Think he will be a good player for us in the future and his courage is certainly not in dispute. Hopefully he is put in to have both shoulders fixed up so he is fit and firing come the start of preseason. His decision making and disposal is a slight concern, but I'm prepared to cut him some slack considering the circumstances last night.

Hang tight Sam there will be a bit of room in the side next year the way things are going atm.

Yes, agree. Diabetes is common in society and it is wonderful what they can do with medicine to treat it.

I was just shocked that he lost 15 kilos in two weeks and was in a bad way after his groin operation.

Very concerned about Sam's durability to play AFL. He's had shoulder problems before. Could be they're chronically weakened and may never stand up to the physical pressure.
Hope I'm wrong - really like what he could add to the side.

the courage sam showed was inspirational and what's needed to play afl. feel so sorry for the kid, terrible run with injuries and now he's set for shoulder recos on both shoulders. I just hope they don't replace such a hard, courageous player like Reid, with someone the opposite.. Josh hill.

Thought he played fairly well against the Hawks last night, but just happy to see him back in the team. Very hard at it. Hope he strings some games together and gets into some red hot form.

I wouldn't say he was good, a lot of rust there which can be forgiven. But I do agree, we must keep playing him because the upside is there
