Speaking of subs, Xavier Ellis is the red vest king. A record that won't be broken.

Who can name the 5 premiership subs?

Mitch Duncan in 2011.

Jonathan Simpkin in one of the Hawks’ flags. Against us in 2015? I’ve erased most of that day from my memory.

Pretty sure Hartung did it one or two years for Hawthorn.

He's one of those guys that played at a successful club for a few years and didn't win a flag. Played in a winning prelim in 2015 and a losing semi in 2016. I don't remember him being any good, just looking like the T-1000 from Terminator 2.

We had a couple in the 90s. Scott Watters played the 91 GF and most games in 92 then missed out on the flag and left for Sydney. Laidley, Clape, Irving hung around for a few years but never played in 92 or 94. Most players that started out for us during the 92-94 flag years didn't go on to do much.

Of our 69 100+ game players only Priddis, Phil Matera, Sheppard, Rosa, Naitanui, Gaff, Morrison, Scott Selwood, Mackenzie, Gardiner, Gehrig, Nicoski, Staker, Metropolis, Josh Hill didn't play in flags and most of them at least played in a GF. Good strike rate.

Of that list only Phil Matera, Morrison, Scooter, Mackenzie, Gehrig and Metropolis did not play in a Grand Final.

Not sure many clubs can claim that kind of strike rate.

Matera (injured and late withdrawal in 05, retired in 06), Morrison (played 96-04), Selwood (emergency in ‘15), MacKenzie (injured in ‘15 and ‘18), Gehrig (hadn’t debuted in ‘94), Metropolis (on the fringe in ‘92 and ‘94) the ones who never played a grand final.

They were all wrong time guys.

Morrison 1996-2004 (2 years with Collingwood)
S Selwood 2008-2015 (4 years with Geelong)
Mackenzie 2007-2017 (injury ruined him after 2014)
Gehrig 1995-2000 (8 years with St Kilda)
Metropolis 1992-2000 (1 year with Freo)

Mackenzie the one who should really be a flag player. Only 27 in 2015 and 30 in 2018. Had Gehrig stuck around (and we'd somehow still got Kerr) the mid 2000s version of him would've made us unstoppable. But he was a flanker with us, then the Saints tried him as a defender before realising he could kick 100 goals at FF.

Some guys are very lucky with timing, others very unlucky. Banfield the only 90s flag winner to still be there in 2006. LeCras was around for 14 years and finished with a flag, Venables and Ryan played half a season and won a flag, Priddis played 240 and retired the year before a flag. For every Shane Crawford who finishes with a fairtytale there's a Bob Murphy or Stuart Maxfield who misses out, and plenty of Kade Simpsons and Robert Harveys.

Priddis is the one. Debuts in a flag year, playing a position we're so strong in, then retires just before a flag year.

Not going to get into whether building the midfield around him for so long was the best thing or not.

Can't deny that he was very good for a long long time, and his career was bookended with 2 of the more famous games in our history.

Debut in comeback Kings game vs Geelong.
2nd last game in Shuey after the extra time siren.
That best exemplifies just how competitive we were throughout his era.

Eras fairly or unfairly define players to some degree. I think Priddis retired with a bit left in the tank, but had he played on I don't think we would've won in 2018. Harsh on him, but we needed a change and the 2018 midfield mix worked even without Naitanui.

We were good early to mid 90s (3 GFs, 2 flags), mid 2000s (2, 1) and then mid to late 2010s (2, 1). Starting out in 91-94 would have been tough. We had 9 of 26 players debut in that period play in the 92 or 94 flags. If you couldn't establish yourself straight away then you probably didn't get much of a run until after 94 (like Metro) and were gone before 2006. Guys like Metro, Schofield, Paul Symmons were decent enough players, but they are always remember as 'tweener players from the less celebrated late 90s era.

This one may take a while but we all have the time, right?

Name the 17 players to have played over 50 games for us & over 50 games for another team.

Stenglein, Ball, Jetta, Chick and Judd all played more than 100 games for two teams, I think.

Laidley
Wellingham
Gehrig (might’ve got the ton at both clubs too)
Ebert
Jarrad Schofield
